Eight Points, Nine Seconds Review:

http://i39.tinypic.com/nw1120.png (http://www.eightpointsnineseconds.com/)

Jared Wade: 4th-Quarter Collapse Mars Good Indiana Showing

People will justifiably clown that fourth-quarter meltdown in which the Pacers scored
just 9 points in the period, coughed up a double-digit lead and went five minutes
without hitting a shot. And any basketball players that do such a thing barely have
the right to be called professionals on this day.

But ya know what?

This loss in Atlanta was the most encouraging sign yet that the Pacers aren’t totally
cooked without Danny Granger for the next few months. Because, really, in order to
collapse, you do actually have to be in total control for the game. And Indiana was.
For a few hot seconds, anyway.

In the third quarter it even got to the point where you stop even glancing at the score
because one team, Indiana, was controlling the game so much. From the other
perspective, you could write the same thing about the Hawks: they had one terrible
stretch but started and closed the game really well, which is what matters. Well,
Indiana won the middle of the game. Sure, winners and winners and loser are losers
and monster trucks and COME AT ME BRO and extreme sports and No Fear t-shirts and
all that. But it aint even mid-November and nothing truly matters yet, so let’s not harp
on details. Whether you’re 2-3 or 3-2 isn’t preordaining your season.

The key takeaway, to me, is less about the discouraging but hopefully not deeply
significant collapse. It was watching the Pacers, for the first time this season, string
together two excellent offensive quarters. In the second period, they shot 11-for-21
(52.4%), had 7 assists on those 11 buckets and scored 25 points despite only hitting
one three and no free throws. You would like them to get to the line, but they got
everyone involved and just generally looked cohesive. Eight players scored in quarter
and nobody made more than 2 FGs. Nice distribution. Meanwhile, Lance Stephenson
played all 12 minutes and just looked flat-out good. He looked like flat-out trash
during the fourth-quarter collapse, but we’ll just pretend, for now, that that part of
the game film got lost in the mail...CONTINUE READING AT 8p9s (http://www.eightpointsnineseconds.com/2012/11/post-game-grades-fourth-quarter-collapse-to-atlanta-mars-good-indiana-showing/)

Howlin' T Wolf:

Tom Westerholm: A CHANGE OF PACE - Some Derrick Williams Optimism

Synergy Sports got themselves online this week, which has been immensely fun for
two reasons. First, Synergy’s in-depth statistical analysis immediately raises the level
of basketball discourse, both on Twitter and in basketball writing. Second, it allows for
an incredible amount of #smallsamplesizetheater, a Twitter hashtag designated for
basketball fans who get too excited by James Harden averaging over 40 ppg after his
first two games and the Lakers starting the season 1-4.

But while Minnesota’s first four games aren’t a large enough sample size to draw
absolute conclusions from, they ARE enough of a sample size for us to examine early
season tendencies and flaws.

Through four games, Derrick Williams, per Synergy Sports, has averaged 0.78 ppp in
50 opportunities. But that fairly disappointing number is actually inflated thanks to an
extremely efficient game against Orlando. While Williams averaged just 0.62 ppp (bad)
and 0.53 ppp (atrocious) against Brooklyn and Sacramento respectively, he averaged
1.27 against Orlando. So what changed? Why was Williams SO much better against the
Magic?

The first (and easiest) answer is that Williams was used much less. While Williams had
a usage rate of 32.6% against Brooklyn, higher than Kevin Durant’s usage rate most
nights, it was back down to a much more manageable 16.6% against the Magic. So that
was undoubtedly part of the improvement.

But, even with a nod to #smallsamplesizetheater improving Williams’ points per
possession efficiency, he clearly played better basketball against Orlando. One thing
that may have helped him was Glen Davis’ bad defense. There are undoubtedly worse
defenders than Davis in the post, but when he is forced to stretch his defense to the
perimeter, Davis struggles inordinately, as he is neither particularly athletic nor is he
particularly long-limbed to contest jumpers. Look at this freeze frame from the first
quarter, right before Williams (spotting up) hits his first 3-pointer:

http://i47.tinypic.com/2zzq9w6.png

I understand that Williams isn’t the kind of player who terrifies opponents from 3-point
range, but that’s ENTIRELY too much space. Williams has no reason to hesitate. When
he hesitates, his shot is screwed. Whether he back-rims the field goal attempt or just
heaves it off the side of the backboard, a shot that gives Williams pause simply isn’t a
shot that’s going in. But here he is able to catch and fire away immediately, and he
takes advantage.

So Williams’ success was due in part...CONTINUE READING AT HOWLIN' T WOLF (http://www.howlintwolf.com/2012/11/09/a-change-of-pace-some-derrick-williams-optimism/)

Two wide open layups for them at the end. Have to give some credit to Adelman, but those plays wouldn't work vs. a team with 5 smart defenders. Works fine vs. us, though.

Also, whoever defended Hill on that 3 (i don't remember) did a very poor job. What's the point in biting the drive there? Poor play by us, poor defense by them.
