Eight Points, Nine Seconds Review:

http://i39.tinypic.com/nw1120.png (http://www.eightpointsnineseconds.com/)

Jared Wade: David West Being Agressive and Paul George Trying to Be...

The Pacers were able to come back and win last night for only one reason: David West
took a ton of shots in the second half and made almost all of them. To be precise, West
put up 14 shots in the second half (9 in the fourth quarter). For perspective, Kobe Bryant
ó by far ó led the league in field goal attempts per game last season with 23.0 a night.
(Kevin Durant was a distant second with 19.7 per.)

Extrapolated over a full game, if West were to shoot as often as he did in the second
half last night and take 28 shots per game, he would be shooting a full five times per
night more than Kobe does. Thatís a lot. Bryant has never averaged that many per
night, even when he was scoring 35.4 points per game. Michael Jordan, even when he
was averaging 37.1 points per game, never averaged 28 shot attempts per night.
Neither Allen Iverson nor Tracy McGrady, who combined to win all five scoring titles
between the 1999-2000 and 2004-05 seasons, ever averaged 28 FGAs per night.
You get the point. Itís a lot of shots to be taking in a half, especially in the fourth.

David West, 4th Quarter Shooting vs Toronto

As you can see, one of his two misses in the fourth even came on a three with the
shot clock dwindling. We went over in more detail how he got all these good shots
last night (Andrea Bargnani was overmatched, Raptors made some strange team
defensive decisions, Paul George and West had some uncanny chemistry). But the
takeaway is that Indiana, despite not playing particularly well for much of the game
on offense, was able to get good looks when it matter.

Mostly, because West put the team on his back.

Early on, however, there were other guys who found ways to score well. Roy Hibbert
was able to find position early (not so much in the second half when Toronto played
him less straight up, however) and convert some nice moves. And Paul George came
out the gates gunning, apparently ready to burden the load left vacant by Danny
Granger. While he was very effective early (see his first-half shooting chart) and
showed some growth by, for example, knowing when to quick-shoot over a flat-
footed, shorter defender when he found himself with the ball on the wing, there was
still a lack of...CONTINUE READING AT 8p9s (http://www.eightpointsnineseconds.com/2012/11/discussing-how-david-west-took-over-the-game-and-whether-paul-george-is-a-player-who-will/)

Ailene Voisin: Smart is Ready to Put Stamp on Kings

Keith Smart finally feels like a head coach. Not an interim head coach auditioning
for one of the NBA's 30 jobs, or worse, a lame-duck head coach waiting for the
new owners to cut him loose.

For the first time in his career, Smart arrives at training camp as the man in
charge, bolstered by a one-year contract extension and empowered to transform
his team into his image Ė or someone else's image.

These are his Kings. Their identity is his to choose.

Will the model be the Lakers of the 1980s? Celtics of the 1980s? Jazz of the
1990s? Spurs of the past decade? Nellie's Golden State Warriors of the Run TMC
years?

"I watched a lot of tape this summer, and when I looked at our team, first of all,
I saw that there was too much dribbling," Smart said in something of an
understatement. "The floor started to shrink. I can't change the fact that we have
creative one-on-one players, but I believe I can train them to play differently.
You move, you cut, you shoot, and you're going to have success. But there has*
to be a system. I think I got into too much pick-and-roll action last year with our
guys forcing jumpers or catch and dribble."

Smart spent much of the offseason hunkered down either at the Kings' practice
facility or on the living room couch at his family's home in Danville. He half-
jokingly says he wore out his laptop and the big-screen TV in both places.
Perusing the Internet, he found footage of games dating back more than 60
years, and with little hesitation, pulled out a credit card.

When large boxes of old DVDs and videotapes started arriving at the house, his
puzzled wife, Carol, shot him a look.

"What are you doing with that stuff?" she asked.

"You won't believe what I found," he replied.

Recalling the scene Monday, Smart laughed and shook his head.

"She thought I was crazy. But I studied college games, college coaches, NBA
coaches, went and talked to everybody," Smart said. "I looked at systems from
way back to 1949, and one thing that struck me was that we (NBA teams) all
want to run. But when guys get jammed up, there is no spacing. Draw and kick
and then the guy can't make a shot. This goes back to what they teach kids in
AAU. I have two boys. I know what they're learning. But we have to be more
creative."

Smart refuses to reveal details from his summerlong brainstorming sessions
and barnstorming travels...CONTINUE READING AT SACBEE.COM (http://www.sacbee.com/2012/10/03/4876587/smart-is-ready-to-put-stamp-on.html)

I think Green bounces back tonight. Hopefully we stick him on Johnson and not Evans.

How come Thornton not starting?

I love how the Kings commentator just said David West will need to score at least 20 for us to have a chance to win this game...ok, dude. We had the 5th best record in the league last year and David didn't even average 20...

It happens a fair amount (on LP Broadband - it's been so many yrs since I've bad LP for TV that I don't know if it happens there).

On the flip side, you'll sometimes get the Pacers' feed when they are on the road. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

He has said repeatedly that he doesn't want us to shoot a ton of threes. Some, because we have (theoretically anyway) some good outside shooters. But no chucking threes. Which makes it all the more puzzling when we go on runs of doing it.

Regardless of how they are playing, it makes more sense style wise to have Stephenson start.

George Hill is not a distributor, Lance Stephenson is. Having someone in the lineup who can get the ball to others would be huge for our starters. DJ Augustin fills that role on the bench.

Maybe. Lance has court vision, but I am not at all sure I want him to be told to go out and be a distributor. That didn't work so well before. But it is working well for him to be a scorer who sometimes executes some nice passes.

I also just don't want Lance to be thrust into the starting lineup this early. Not sold on his ability, mentally, to handle that right now. Let him build up some more confidence and show that he can play well consistently.

But I'm almost always inclined to be conservative with these things.

Thats great. I love seeing that, I really do.

But until he starts imposing his will on offense - he is a let down for me. I love Paul George, I really do. Maybe I put unrealistic expectations on him, which is my fault. But I'm not asking him to be a superstar...or even a star. All I want to see right now is for him to at least attempt to take over, but he won't even do that.

In our first two games we have been down against the Raptors and the Bobcats in the final minutes of each game. Thats when real players take over...Paul George didn't do that. If he tried and failed, that would be one thing, that would be growing pains - but the fact that he didn't even try tells me a lot. You really think Jordan would let that happen? What about Reggie? Hell, I don't even thing Granger would sit around and watch. You either have that killer instinct, or you don't. I no longer believe George has it.

I still love George and I still think he will be a good player, but we need another plan if we were banking on him taking us to the next level.

Who's on Thornton? Is it Lance that keeps losing him?

Paul George was the one who needed to run out on him on that last play. Stephenson has left him open too.

Who wants to bet theres not actually a play called? Give the ball to Hill, dribbles clock down, passes it to someone not open with no time on shot clock...and go!

i wouldn't bet against that.

I was close.

Give it to Hill...dribble the clock down and then take a contested fadeaway shot right near the 3 point line.

Awesome.
