SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – What was supposed to be a night of celebration for two former Indiana Pacers may not happen.
Former ABA Pacers great Mel Daniels missed today’s Hall of Fame press conference with an illness and his status for Friday’s induction ceremony is uncertain.
Former Pacers sharpshooter Reggie Miller said Daniels is in the hospital.
Miller was in attendance today, and he’s ready for tomorrow’s ceremony.
“This is truly humbling,” Miller said. “To be on stage and look around this great hall and being around all these Hall of Famers…(Daniels and I) are so excited to represent the state of Indiana.”
Miller is the franchise’s all-time leader in 13 categories. He averaged 18.2 points, with a career-high 24.6 during the 1989-90 season. He was the NBA’s all-time leader in 3-pointers made until Ray Allen broke the record during the 2010-11 season.
Daniels Led the Pacers to three ABA championships and was the league’s Most Valuable Player in 1969 and ’71. He played in seven ABA All-Star Games, including being the MVP of the 1971 game. Daniels led the ABA in rebounding three times is the ABA’s all-time leader in rebounds (9,494) and career rebounding average (15.1).
