Figured I'd remind everyone to tune in ...

... and that we'd use this thread as the "official game thread" ...

Can't go anywhere because there is no such thing as a screen or a set play in Summer League basketball. You can find higher quality ball at the local YMCA than in Summer League. If Hans were actually given an opportunity, he'd be a quality starter in the NBA.

Watching 10 mins of NBA Summer League..note to players..you can make a bigger impression by trying to do less

this is so true when half the team is trying to be superman to make a team hard to play basketball.

Ben was a SG he just handled the ball ND was basically give the ball to Ben and dribble for 30 seconds and do whatever you want. While that can work at the NBA level if you are Lebron James you need tools athletically and basketball wise that only the elite have.

It's ok, but my problem is that it seems like there are a lot of rebounds that he's NOT getting. The rebounds that he has are the ones that went right to him with no one else around. I want to like Plumlee so bad. I hope he steps it up a little.

And rebounding. Not sure what that means in summer league though.

I'm not impressed about his rebounding at the moment. I need to see more. I also need to see if he is a good second leaper and if he can recover and rebound after a block attempt. He should be with his athletic tools.

He also seem to take some plays off on offense. He is not moving a lot behind his defender to try and get better position for the put back. In the 2nd quarter he was active, though.

I certainly need to see more to form an opinion, though. It's still early.

The only thing of note so far (there really shouldn't be anything of note since it is SL), is that Pendergraph hasn't even made me aware that he is on the court.

Otherwise Lance is doing decent, OJ is not doing so hot, and Miles is about what I expected. I really didn't like the Miles pick at first, but I got to think with Roy to practice with and learn from, he can become a solid/consistent backup in 2yrs. After that he can either improve more, or fall into the lull of mediocrity most Centers with his size do.

Yeah, I really think we need another C/PF to be the real backup until Miles is ready in a year or 2. That is not to say he could contribute this year, but I feel like he just wont be consistent enough for what we need. we dont have a post guy playing we arent running our real offense I dont get how anyone can conclude anything about how he will fit.

plus Johnson is a streaky shooter he will have nights where he goes 2-10 but normally come the end of games and in big moments he plays big and scores in bunches. He can go from having 5pts to 20pts in a blink of an eye.

Point being you can't rely on European failures/successes in measuring how players will transition to the NBA game, especially if we're talking about a 20something year old going over to Europe for the first time.

In general, I agree with your point. But this case is a bit different.

If he failed to make an impact in a good league, it would be ok. But the German league is a quite mediocre one. The Slovenian one is below par.

It's not that he failed in Europe that troubles me. It's that he failed in the particular leagues that he did that troubles me.

I was just joking about peoples' overreaction to Summer League. I get that its the first taste of Pacers action in a while, and fun to watch, and nothing wrong with rooting on players, etc. But some of the projections for Orlando Johnson based on one or two baskets in this thread are pretty laughable. It's like saying IU is gonna beat everyone by 30 points after watching them beat one D3 team in exhibition play or something. Just doesn't translate to real competition.

He was pretty efficient at UCSB. This should straighten out after he gets used to the NBA game. Expect less turnovers and more efficient shooting as well. He's actually a pretty decent shooter from outside.

On the positive side for OJ, how many rebounds has this guy grabbed?

While I disagree with you. I do think if a coach or a GM is committed to a player he will get to play and be more successful than others that never get that commitment regardless of talent difference.

For example Miles Plumlee will get every opportunity to show he can play since the Pacers made it clear they believe in him. There are far better players overseas than Plumlee who teams didnt believe in so from that stand point I agree.

Mike D believing that Lin could be his pg is a good example and letting him play even though he was making so many mistakes. Many coaches are too narrow minded and dont give guys a fair shake.

But I dont think that Ben could be a starter in the NBA an AJ Price role?? Sure but I dont see him as a NBA player. With that said if I was a GM Scott Machado would get every opportunity to prove he can play in the league for me even though he went undrafted belief in a guy can go a long way. While other GMs would laugh at me for any signing him and letting him play until he proved me wrong beauty is in the eye of the beholder for a lot of these prospects.

Larry Bird belief in Lance is another great example very few other teams even give him a chance. Without Bird Lance may already be in Euro playing. But now with his growth he could become a 10 year NBA guy (if he develops) and under different circumstances he isn't even a 2 year NBA guy.

If Lance is playing facilitator (by instruction from Vogel), that is a very, very smart move. He's not going to help the team based on just his jump shot, but if he can hone that natural playmaking ability, our 2nd unit could be something serious.

If Plumlee becomes a 9 and 10 guy against the real players in a couple of years than he's a smashing success for the 26th pick.

07-09-2012, 08:47 PM
Just got done watching the DVR, just a few things I will take away.

Lance has really improved, it will be interesting seeing how he does against tougher competition,he still has to work on his shot but I saw him being a lot more patient.

OJ is a rookie so it is harder to get as much info from him, but what did impress me was his ball handling, glad to see that from a guy that is playing the 2. Also one think I would like to see him work on is his man defense, it is hard to really take a bunch from it but too often I saw him playing with his hand down and his man shot right over him.

Plumlee, well I like the fact that he has a lot of things that if coached up can make him a really solid backup center, but you can tell he was not comfortable with his back to the basket, footwork was decent but he does not know how to score down there, Roy will help him with that.

His rebounding was really questionable, even though he pulled down 10 it is more about how he rebounded, it was not aggressive and a lot of the time I saw smaller guys be more active and outwork him for the ball, and by smaller I mean guards. He also looked lost out there in many occasions but I expect that to be much improved when he works with the team. Overall, I am so so about him, but I see where some of his talent is, and I think when he adds confidence on offense and defense then we will be able to determine a lot more about where his ceiling is.

Jeff P did not really impress me much, thought he would have put up a stronger game.

naptownmenace

Lance played with great poise and he was under control. He made several strong drives to the basket actually looking to pass. He could've had 10 assists if his teammates could've made some shots.

OJ has good scoring ability. He's a good 2nd round prospect. He's sort of a poor mans Barbosa so maybe that's what the Pacers have in mind for him.

Plumlee reminds me of a young Dale Davis. Good rebounding and he contests shots well on defense and his offensive game is very raw just like DD's was coming out of college.

So, I spent most of the game watching Plumlee and here's what I saw.

Pros:

1) He sets nice screens. It's refreshing to see that he is a guy who actually tries to set screens and free up the guard instead of rolling to the basket before contact. He also actively tries to set as many screens as possible. When the ball-handler is in his side he'll actively look for him and try to set up a screen.

2) He seems to know how to pass. He is not a great passer or anything but he can get the job done. He doesn't seem like a black hole.

3) His jumper seems ok. Yes, he tends to fade away when shooting which in most cases is bad. Yes, his release is strange. But the release seems to synergize well with the fade so the shot that is produced seems good.

4) He made 75% of his FTs. If he is able to hit them in a 70% clip then I'll be very happy. Of course, the sample size is very small and I need to see more.

5) He did try to establish good post position in any chance he got.

Neutral:

1) His rebounding is a bit weird. He is not always active. He did grab double digit rebounds but sometimes he was content just blocking out and letting his other teammates get the boards. That's not necessarily back but it can backfire.

Cons:

1) He is not a good second leaper. When he jumps for a block, he will not recover quickly to grab the board. In fact, most of the times he doesn't even jump for a second time.

2) He is very raw offensively. He seems to have decent footwork but his touch around the basket is bad. He did seem to finish strong when he had the chance even though he missed one dunk.

3) He didn't struck me as someone who could block a lot of shots. He does not seem to know how to do it yet. Roy and the coaches could help him in that department a lot.

4) He is not moving a lot when he is in the weak side. Of course, there were no set plays so his off the ball movement couldn't be great but I'd like to see him trying to go around his defender in order to acquire a better position for an offensive board.

Overall, I like Plumlee. If Roy can help him develop a back to the basket game then he'll be a solid backup.

Nice work Nuntius.

On passing. I know T Bird always puts emphasis on this little appreciated skill, but he looks like he might be able to make great outlet passes, which really can ignite a fastbreak unit on the floor. Lord knows they need it. Now lets see if DC can figure out to jump stop at the FT line and make a bounce pass to someone filling a lane....or lets see if someone can fill a lane, maybe too.

It seems like some of the key negatives of Plumlee could be corrected or learned. On the other hand, how does one explain the fact that he didn't seem to learn some of these things under one of the best coaches in college basketball? I guess we must also consider the fact that he will be playing every day against an 7'2" NBA All-Star center in practice. If he can't learn and improve from that, I don't know what to say. I'm hoping for the best. I do like what I've seen so far, though.

Is there anyone who can teach him to learn to use those incredible athletic gifts? I'm up for anything that could work. I'd be up for bringing Bill Walton back to help, even if he says more loony stuff about Beethoven or whatever goes through that guy's head.

I don't think that Coach K has anything to do with big man development. I still remember him playing Team USA with Elton Brand, Chris Bosh and LeBron James at the 5 and completely forgetting Dwight Howard on the bench in Saitama. Of course, I was glad he did since this helped my NT to beat Team USA and advance to the Finals :D
