What is a trade exception?

Basically, it's an exception that allows a team to acquire a player by trade (and only by trade) without sending equivalent salary back.

You can get a trade exception by trading a player to a team who has a trade exception or cap room without acquiring anything back. For example, Toronto has a trade exception of 7.6 million from the Barbosa trade. You can also get one if you acquire less salary back in a trade. If a team is under the cap, they lose the exception.

Here's the explanation from Larry Coon's cbafaq. http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q82
