I can not tell you how bad the rebounding makes me want to vomit. Our power forwards (I use that phrase very loosely here) combined for a grand total of 5 rebounds, FIVE!
That may be the single most disgusting statistic I’ve ever seen.
I’m going to go slightly against the grain of what everybody else is saying tonight and say that while I give all of the credit in the world to the Spurs I don’t think we played a particularly good game. At least on the defensive end anyway. On offense we played alright I suppose (at least we shot good from the field anyway) but it really was based more on players getting their own individual shot and very rarely was because of a well executed offense.
But our defense was just abysmal for most of the night, again I understand the Spurs are an outstanding offensive unit but they just really took advantage of our two greatest weaknesses. Darren Collison attempting to guard the pick and roll and our coaching staff’s inability to compensate for our lack of ability to guard a pick & roll. There was a point in the 3rd quarter that once again they had Roy out high attempting to guard the dribbler and he ended up 35-40’ away from the basket.
Is there any reason, other than in transition, that Roy Hibbert should ever be attempting to guard someone 40’ from the basket. Honestly guys I’ll live with it if a guard pulls up and drains a 35-40’ three point shot instead of constantly leaving Roy scrambling backwards and every one of our defenders having to make a mad dash on rotation to cover the inevitable open lane that this defense creates.
I’m saying it now, sure our players have some real weaknesses on defense, but I am not impressed with Dan Burke’s defensive schemes. Relies way too much on rotations and does not hold individual defenders accountable enough IMO. We just do not have the quick defenders that other teams do to be able to constantly attempt to double the strong side like we do and we certainly need to stop having our 7’2” center guard the PnR at the top of the arc and beyond.
The good news though is that Atlanta lost tonight to Philly. This helps two ways, one it keeps Atlanta at bay and it bring Philly closer to taking back the Atlantic which we would prefer.
Now for the bad news, well other than the loss itself.
We just had our first losing month of the season. In March we had 8 wins & 9 losses.
It’s not like we played bad vs. the Spurs and I think if we played like that against some other teams we probably could have pulled off a win, but they really are just that good.
On another note we all need to either pray, meditate, think happy thoughts or whatever it is you do with your own faith or even if you have none for Roy Hibbert’s back.
The last thing we need is for Roy to go down or start having back spasms that limit him. I love Lou but he is really a limited min. type of guy and our rebounding is already bad as it is so the last thing we need is for Roy to go down.
Fesenko may get playing time whether Vogel wants him to or not.
Also on that note, seriously if we are saying he is out of shape and needs some time to get into shape and we all know we do not have consecutive days off for the rest of the season then why not assign him to the Mad Ants for a couple of weeks just to get into playing shape and get some actual court time in. We will not be practicing at all the rest of the season, at least in any meaningful way and I’ve listened to Vogel about him. Unless Roy goes down he has no intention of using him unless foul trouble or some other emergency arises. So why not send him to the D-League.
You know the more I think about it the more that kind of hits me as a really good P.R. tool for the Pacers that they are just blowing right now. Ft. Wayne is a really big city in our state and we do not take any advantage of our farm team up there. If they were to assign a player up there from time to time wouldn’t the locals maybe have more interest? If nothing else wouldn’t that be more for the local press up there to talk about and mention the word Pacers in the paper & theTV stations?
I know that the P.R. guys can’t make any kind of player decisions and frankly player decisions should not be based on P.R. but every now and then when we have a full roster and have zero intention of using all of the players shouldn’t we assign someone up there just for a couple of weeks?
I digress.
Anyway let’s just assign grades & give an abbreviated run down of the players.
Danny Granger: B+ You know when you look at the box scores it looks like he had a pretty good game and down towards the end he did have a flurry to help get us back in the game, but that really is kind of the problem. He scored 7 points in the final few min. of the game and if he hadn’t he would have had a paltry 11 points. He wasn’t even getting up shots tonight because at the end he only had 13 attempts. A lot of this though has to be credited to the Spurs defense as they doubled Danny anytime he did anything with the ball other than shoot a quick jumper. However he also seemed kind of docile tonight as one time he dribbled in from guarded three to what would have been a 12’ jumper that he was wide open for but he passed it to West who immediately was covered who passed it to Collison who bobbled the dribble leading to a turn over. Not sure what was up with that. His defense was his usual, he made some plays (fouled the hell out of Duncan but got a jump ball) and he missed some plays. But again at crunch time Danny steps up, he doesn’t always deliver but he does make every effort.
David West: C Yes I know a lot of you will thin that is harsh and it is. But not only did he only manage to grab 3 rebounds in 34 min. of play but he only went to the free throw line twice, meaning that his scoring basically was on his jump shooting, which is ok as he is very good at it. But I would like more aggression myself. He was though one half of one of the most decrepit slow blocks I’ve ever seen. When he rose 6” off of the ground and blocked Tim Duncan who had skied for a whopping 5” it looked like two old men in the park playing chess. I thought we should call the game for a moment get them some geritol and let them catch their breath.
Roy Hibbert: A- I saw our season flash before my eyes when I saw Roy grimacing in pain holding his lower back. I began to reach for the vomit socks (that should bring back some old P.D. memories) when I saw him limping towards the locker room. I was relieved that he came back but was really distraught when he didn’t sit on the bench. I’m just saying it right now, he probably won’t play tonight vs. the Rockets because his back will have tightened up. I would rather sit him and let him rest than to not let this heal right. As to the game itself Roy was a trooper all night long. He had 4 blocked shots and while I would like double figure rebounds at the very least he tried to rebound tonight which is more than I could say for anyone else other than Hill.
Paul George: B+ Fancy dunks and steals do NOT make up for the boneheaded fouls he keeps getting to start every game. I kept seeing everyone say that he was a beast but I think some of you are confusing fancy play with solid play and Paul was hardly solid. Yes he had some highlight dunks but he was not better than Genobli was tonight so calling him a beast is just wrong. He ended up having a good game after a rotten start and his rotten starts really are hurting the team. But don’t think I’m bashing him, he still played well and yes I agree that soon (maybe next year) he will be a bona fide star in this league.
Darren Collison: D On paper he didn’t have a bad game, it’s just too bad we don’t play on paper. You would think guarding a player like Parker that relies a lot on speed would be right up his alley, but the Spurs used his kryptonite against him (they ran a lot of PnR’s) and rendered him impotent and useless. Parker just killed us all night long but even more so when Collison was on him as he was either getting right at the rim or setting up the offense for other players. Oh what it must be like to actually have a good point guard on your team.
Tyler Hansbrough: C Two rebounds, 2. Oh he managed to get his 12 points though. Thanks in part to lights out jump shooting but his lack of rebounding lately has me more than a little concerned. Also am I safe to assume that Dunleavy’s elbow gave him another concussion? He is now missing free throws like he was Shaq.
George Hill: B+ I didn’t particularly think he had a good game until I looked at the Box score and saw that he was actually flirting with a triple double, not real close but close enough to make me notice. Look he is not a point guard either on the offensive end but if nothing else he generally stops the bleeding on the defensive side of the ball.
Lou Amundson: C Seemed kind of small and insignificant tonight, don’t know why but he just did.
Dahntay Jones: C Does what Dahntay does
Leandro Barbosa: F Thank you for missing a wide open layup and blowing Tyler’s one chance for an assist. That was really a great outlet basketball pass by Tyler to hit him in stride in front of his defender only to have him blow the layup. Look this is what you are going to get with this guy, I don’t mean bad play all of the time although tonight he was just bad, I mean there are going to be games like Miami you are ready to crown him 6th man of the year and other night like tonight where you are going to want to assign him to the D-league.
All we can do now is hope and pray that we can get this game tonight vs. the Rockets because this upcoming week is going to be tough.
That may be the single most disgusting statistic I’ve ever seen.
