Eight Points, Nine Seconds <S>Preview</S> Review:

Jared Wade: Barbosa Is Happy to Be a Pacer

Trades are a cold reality of the NBA. One day, a team is paying you a huge
salary for your services, and the next they are telling you thanks, but no
thanks ó we can do better. Then of course comes the relocation hassle and
the burden that can place on families.

For Leandro Barbosa, however, being traded from the Toronto Raptors to
the Indiana Pacers was a welcome change. ďIt was my time,Ē he said, ďand
Iím happy to be here.Ē

It also usually helps the transition process when the player isnít blind-sided
by the news. Barbosa foresaw moving on. ďI kind of knew,Ē said Barbosa.
ď[Raptors GM] Bryan Colangelo told me Indiana was really interested,
and he told me that it was maybe going to happen.Ē

Then, on the day of the trade deadline, it did. And now the 29-year-old,
long-armed combo guard from Sao Paulo, Brazil ó the largest city in
South America ó once again gets to do what he made his NBA name off:
being a key scorer off the bench for a playoff team.

Individually, his time in Toronto was marked by unusually erratic (for him)
shooting accuracy and struggles through a chronic wrist injury. But worse
was the teamís futility. During his two years as a Raptor, his team racked
up 102 losses compares to just 62 wins. This, for a guy who made the
Western Conference Finals with the Phoenix Suns in his second season and
won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award for the 61-win Suns in 2006-07.

In that respect, Barbosa is just happy to be headed back to the playoffs.
ďIím very happy to be here,Ē said Barbosa. ďItís a good team. Itís a team
that is going to the playoffs for sure. I love the coach and the organization.
Itís a good opportunity for meóa new family for me.Ē

Leandrinho, as he is called in his native Brazil, missed 8 of his 10 shots
last night in Indianaís loss to the Suns and blew 3 of his 4 attempts
against the Wizards the night before. But in his Pacers debut last Tuesday
against the Clippers, Barbosa scored 9 points in his first 9 minutes in an
Indiana uniform and finished the game scoring 12 on 10 shots.

The key thread in all performances has been putting up a lot of looks.

According to Barbosa, thatís exactly what he was brought in to do. He
talked about his role...CONTINUE READING AT 8p9s (http://www.eightpointsnineseconds.com/2012/03/leandro-barbosa-is-happy-to-be-a-pacer-bring-speed-and-energy-take-shots/)

Month of March? More like month of Mike!

I canít explain how it happened, I canít say I expected it to happen. But I can
say Iím enjoying it.

Some how, while being the most enjoyable to watch Milwaukee Bucks forward
since Toni Kukoc left town, Mike Dunleavy has been one of the best offensive
players in the NBA over the past month. Heís kind of playing like Kukoc, if only
Kukoc was just leaving his prime rather than a few years past it when he was
in Milwaukee. Thatís a lofty compliment coming from as big a Kukoc fan as me.

In the month of March, Dunleavy has averaged 16/4/4 while shooting better
than 50%, one of only three players (as far as I can tell) to do so. The other
two? Lebron James and Dwyane Wade. Wow. Dunleavy joins James again as
one of the leagueís top 10 players in True Shooting Percentage, a measure
that takes into account field goals, threes and free throws.

Dunleavy isnít forcing his athleticism down the throats of opponents in the
way that James and Wade are though. Rather heís using his opponents speed
and athleticism against them quite frequently. If I had a dollar for every
occasion this season that Dunleavy has pump faked and watched a defender
fly five feet past him trying to block his shot as he calmly took another
dribble forward and knocked down his shot Iíd be a rich man.

And where James and Wade drive and dish and throw full court lobs to each
other, Dunleavy has a more cerebral approach to moving the ball on offense.
Heís quick and heís smart. Never does the ball linger in his hands. He comes
off screens and when he pulls up to shoot he often has an eye on the man
rolling to the hoop. While heís in the air he has the ability to use his height
and make the pass to the rolling screener or pull-up for a jumper himself.
On the wing or on the pick and roll, he makes decisions quickly. Even though
he hasnít fared particularly well as a shooter in pick and roll situations, heís
shown an ability to create for his teammates and find the screener rolling
to the hoop.

Offensively heís really shined...CONTINUE READING BUCKSKETBALL (http://www.bucksketball.com/2012/03/month-of-march-more-like-month-of-mike-dunleavy/)

Looking forward to the game tonight. The Monta trade was brilliant for the Bucks. All they needed was some offense and having Monta opens up the court for everybody. I'm not sure if they'll make the playoffs or not, but they're a much better team now than they were a couple weeks ago IMO.

Should be a good game.... yes the trade gave them a great scorer.... but they got rid of their big 7 foot anchor... id like to see a heavy dose of roy hibbert tonight.

Bogut was never the same after his injury. Bucks also picked up a lottery pick from a couple years back in Udoh who's a really good post defender. If they can resign Monta, I'd say the Bucks won that trade.

I agree though, they're still weak in the front court. Hibbert should get the ball every time down tonight.

Wells

Center Kyrylo Fesenko, who the Pacers signed last week, won’t make his debut with the team for about a week. Pacers coach Frank Vogel said Fesenko has some visa issues to get resolved before he’ll be able to play. “He’ll be able to work with us, but he won’t be traveling to road games,” Vogel said. “He’ll be working with our strength and conditioning coach getting some shots up working on those sort of things.”

He must have worked on it in the off-season, like PG did. They've both improved a ton from behind the arc.

Just because most of us don't harp on it constantly doesn't mean we're giving him a free pass. I've seen it mentioned quite a bit.

But to more directly address your question, I suspect if people felt we had a better option (if, for example, Tyler was clearly out playing West on either side of the ball) the complaining would be louder and longer. One of the reasons DC gets so much **** is because a lot of people seem to think Hill would be better as a starter. Hell, a small handful of people think AJ would be better or that Lance has more talent as a PG.

I also think some people cut West some slack because of the severity of the injury he is coming off of and the amount of time it usually takes to see a full recovery. His lateral movement wasn't quite THIS bad before.

I'll say it one more time. Lou has no problem keeping up with a PG defensively. They always fail to score on him off the dribble.
He also did a good job on Mike D at the end of the first quarter.

Dude has good lateral quickness, but he's also just good at it. He knows how much to back off, plays the angles right, doesn't bite on the fakes, and uses his height and hops to his advantage.

Anyway, so far so good. Our jumpers has been falling (GHill 3/3, Dahntay 2/3 for 3 and DC also had 3 jumpers, heck even Lou had a jumper) and we're beating them on the boards and on the interior. David West and Roy Hibbert have been good offensively.

Their jumpers are not falling quite as much (especially Drew's).

I hope that we're able to step it up on the 3rd and make a run to get ourselves a comfortable lead.

However, I really think that their jumpers will start falling and that the game is going to go down to the wire.

I don't think he'd be nearly as successful if he had to stay with one for any length of time. Can't see him successfully fighting through screens and whatnot. But guards get switched onto him and think "Big dude with a ponytail, I can take him" and are surprised when he doesn't fall for the tricks.

It's strictly a limited-use talent, but it's still a nice one to have.

The Pacers are last in assists in the NBA. Considering how deep they are you would think they would be amount the leaders.
It would be scary to think how good they would be if they actually moved the ball.

Most post ups don't get "assists" tallied, that's one reason.. the other reason is our offense just isn't that great at ball movement. :/ two reasons for that, not a true passing pg, and just not a fluid offense that we run either..

George is still learning.. likes the flashy things as a young exciting player.. post ups aren't exciting. He will learn.

But some good points indeed.

To be fair, if we played a team as weak inside as the Bucks every night we'd probably sweep the rest of the season and the playoffs.

They are weak inside because all of them can hit 3s and long 2s. They move the ball well, they find the open man and he takes the open jumper. That's their offensive scheme. It gives them a lot of assists but not enough FTs.

When their jumpers are falling, they are winning. This does not seem to be one of those days.

Yes and no. Lots of times, a high assist total is simply indicative of one guy breaking the defense down and dumping the ball off. I agree that the Pacers don't always move the ball well, but I honestly don't think they're worst in the league.

Mike Dunleavy has always come off as a guy that kind of enjoys belittling other teammates and players, and I think that what we saw between Dun and Tyler right there is something I'm sure was aggravating chemistry-wise...

Not to toot my own horn, but I've only made three wrong picks thus far in my entire NCAA Tournament pick 'em.

Just to clarify, that's the NCAA Men's Hockey Tournament. 6 of 9, correct. Bracket savant.

Yeah, I read some stuff a couple years back about him being a practical joker. And it never seemed like anyone responded in a very happy way after he would do some things. It made him seem like a bit of an outcast or something.

Yeah, interesting that they were so blunt about it. We heard the same kind of stuff out of Golden State when he left there. That's a lot of smoke when it comes to Mike being a ******* of a teammate.

Tyler was going up and Dunleavy hit him with both hands in the face. Surprised Tyler didn't get a concussion, honestly.

I think this is a conscious strategy on his part and I know some disagree, but I don't mind, at least in the short-term. We've been getting hosed (we've benefited from some calls tonight for sure though) on calls lately, might as well see if upping the intensity will help. The squeaky wheel getting the grease and all that. I'd rather it be Vogel that increases his complaining than our guys getting distracted doing it.
