View Full Version : So, what about Kyrylo Fesenko?

Yeah, it's one more of those threads. But since we are (reportedly at least) looking to pick up a big man off of waivers we may as well explore all our options.

So, as I've said in several other topics my preference would be Kyrylo Fesenko. Why you ask?

Because Kyrylo is a massive body who can defend amazingly and rebound solidly. Despite his large frame he is not as slow as our bigs and excels in defending the PnR. His offensive moves are limited but he can utilize his speed to go beneath the basket and score without being blocked.

Here's a video that some Jazz fans put together for Fes:

<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rzrDewjv8kM?version=3&feature=player_detailpage"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rzrDewjv8kM?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object>

Here's another reason why he became a fan favorite:

<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/pMxGw7uObmk?version=3&feature=player_detailpage"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/pMxGw7uObmk?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object>

All in all, I feel that this guy deserves a second chance. And we're in a good position to offer him that. If our FO feels like we need to sign a defensive big man then Kyrylo is our guy.

Why's he still a FA? Didn't someone try and sign him, the Warriors I want to say?

Yeah, they did. According to sources both sides decided to back off as Kyrylo needed 1 or 2 weeks more to recover from his injury in September. That was back in late December.

I think Fesenko would be a great pick-up. From everything I've read he's an excellent defender who may become our best defensive big as soon as we sign him. We need a big and I don't think we're going to do much better than him.

Does anyone remember the buzz last season, I think it was some defensive stat that showed the Jazz were significantly better defensively when he played.

Don't remember exactly what though, I'll do a bit of googlizing.

Thanks, below are the excerpts that Pacer fans should care about.

Here we go:

According to Synergy Sports, Fesenko allowed a mere .716 points per play last season, ranking him in the 96th percentile among all NBA players. Of all the hoopsters that had at least 100 defensive plays last season, Fesenko ranked fourth overall in points per play (Boston's Jermaine O'Neal was second at .675 points per play). Opponents shot a mere 34.2 percent against Fesenko and, while he's still susceptible to post-up situations, he excelled against the pick-and-roll and especially in spot-up situations where players must shoot over his long frame (Fesenko has a 9-foot-4 standing reach).

The best-kept secret in the NBA right now is Fesenko's monstrous defensive stats. It's not that one or two metrics point out his defensive value; it's that all of them do, without any pointing to the contrary. Last season the Jazz were an eye-popping 11.91 points per 100 possessions better on defense with Fesenko on the floor, and this is not a new trend. The season before it was 8.67; in limited minutes his first two seasons he also had a strong differential. Synergy Stats, meanwhile, rated Fesenko as the second-best defender in the entire league among players who faced at least 150 opponent plays; the season before he was first. And according to 82games.com, opposing centers had a PER of just 10.4 against him; the season before it was 12.9. Despite his size, Fesenko doesn't block a ton of shots or dominate the boards. He just uglies up the game for opponents with his sheer hugeness, especially since he moves his feet fairly well for his size. And he can still get better -- he wasn't always fully engaged in Utah and needs to step up his commitment.

He's likely headed to the Celtics....which is good enough for me since I don't find him too impressive given the comments from some of the PD posters here.

Is tomorrow the last day that we can add someone to be included to the Playoff roster?

I know that Wells tweeted that they were interested in Hollins.....but does this mean that the FO recognizes the need to add another Big Body and will try to add one before Friday?

My guess is that Bird thinks that if Hollins could be had...great...sign him...if not....Given Bird ( or was it Vogel's ? ) comments regarding Pendegraph being ready to contribute ( I think cuz he was injured before ), I wouldn't be surprised if we will go into battle with a Frontcourt of Hibbert/West/Amundson/Hansbrough/Pendegraph. I'm not exactly thrilled by it to tell you the truth.

Is anyone else content with what we have?

Unless we face the Magic in the playoffs, nobody really has two legitimate centers that we would have to worry about.

Our 2nd unit is all about energy, athleticism and hustle. If we bring in a slow plodding center, the unit would be slowed down. Personally I like what Lou and Tyler are bringing.

You get a Big Man to not only defend against other Big Men ( like Dwight ), but you also have Big Men to defend the basket whenever you have Players drive to the hoop for a basket.

I want someone that can knock DRose or DWade on their butt ( cuz that is what both of those Players excel at doing ) when they try to drive to the paint to score. Hibbert, West or Hansbrough won't do that.....I'd hope that Amundson can....I have no clue if Pendegraph can.

IMHO....you can never have enough Big Men to help defend the paint. From everything that I have read...Fesenko is exactly that....a very competent Defending Big Man that won't block shots...but is large, wide and good enough to take up real estate inside the paint to ( hopefully ) discourage Players from driving to the hoop.

Yes... We've been without Foster 90% of the season so far and Pendy's *** has barely left the pine as it is... What's the point of signing another big that is not going to play?

And to those that just want a 7'er... What good does 7' do for you if he can't play a lick of basketball? Ex. David Harrison

Lou plays the 5 just fine at 6'9"...

I will grant you that Lou has played admirably but you still need depth, a guy like Fesenko who has legit size for a 7fter is a no brainer to keep as your back up. Maybe he is behind Lou in the depth chart this season, but you gotta remember that Lou is an expiring contract. At some point you gotta keep some guys on contract to fill in the gaps. Getting a legit 7fter who has proven himself in the playoffs no less should be a great pick up.

Lou is amazing, don't get me wrong. I just want us to explore all of our options.

By the way, I'd love to have Lou and Fesenko at the court in the same moment when we need to foul and defend. You're not getting in a paint when it is guarded by those two. At least, not without getting blocked, fouled, bumped or all of the above.

By the way, Fesenko is exactly this guy that is going to knock DRoss and D-Wade on their butts.

Here's Fesenko vs Kobe:

I think we need to add another big. In case you have all forgotten, Roy Hibbert completely disappeared in the playoffs last year and Jeff Foster was by far our best big man. Now that Foster's gone, Hibbert is really the only true center on the roster. That's not an acceptable situation.
