Eight Points, Nine Seconds Preview:

A Few with Donahue

Tim didn't make a new Twitter-lengthed video again today for one of two reasons.
It's either because A) he doesn't think the Warriors game is all that important or
B) he's extremely disappointed in you...every last one of you.

I'm going with B.

But Tim DID put together a mid-season report. Read that below.

Eight Points, Nine Seconds <S>Preview</S> Review:

Tim Donahue: By the Numbers

Who’s up for another installment of the By The Numbers series? The All Star
break is always a good time to take the team’s temperature, and in an odd
confluence of events, the break actually coincides with the precise midpoint
of the Pacers’ season. Indy has played 33 of their scheduled games, so let’s
look at the big numbers.

21-12

You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who would be disappointed in a 21-12
record for the Pacers at this point, if looked at in the macro sense. There’s a
temptation to look at their 16-6 start, then see the 5-6 record over the last
11 games, and feel a little uncomfortable. However, it’s tough to tell how
valid this is. Teams aren’t machines, and seasons are made up of peaks and
valleys.

That’s not to say that there weren’t certain flaws in the Pacers’ structure
that got exposed recently, but the team remains in a good place. This record
is currently good enough for third best in the Eastern Conference, and sixth
best league-wide.

10th, 13th

The area worthy of most concern long term is the decline in the Pacers’
defense. They have dropped from Top 5 to hovering around 10th in Defensive
Efficiency. Over their 5-game losing streak, Indiana allowed almost 113pts per
100 possessions. While there were signs of improvement over the 4-game
winning streak heading into the break, it is still not back to where it should be.
Slow defensive starts in three of the four games put the Pacers in the trail
position after one quarter, and Indy allowed 122/100 in a win over New
Orleans, before allowing 108/100 to Charlotte – the worst offensive team
in the league – in the final game before All Star weekend.

The bellwether metric for the Pacer defense is Field Goal (and eFG) Defense.
Indy’s actual FG% allowed has increased from .417 to .429, dropping them
from the best in the league. During that time, the Pacers overall defense
has dropped from 5th to 10th.

Offensively, the Pacers have finally peaked above average at 103.8 in
offensive efficiency. They still don’t shoot well (.464 eFG%, 24th), but they
are above average-to-good at the other three four factors. The offense is
coming along, but they need to get that defense back on track.

19-14

That’s the number of wins I had projected at the mid-point as part of
ESPN’s pre-season predictions. The full season number was 37, but I
think that probably should be adjusted upwards. Finishing on my
projection of 18-15 for the second half puts them at 39 wins, but 40+
needs to be the goal...CONTINUE READING AT 8p9s (http://www.eightpointsnineseconds.com/2012/02/by-the-numbers-at-the-all-star-break-through-33-games/)

The Last time these two teams met on January 20th, the Pacers were
victorious at Oracle Arena because they manufactured easier shot
attempts than their opponents. Indeed, on that night, Indiana scored
42 points in the paint, generated 17 fast break points and went to the
free throw line 21 times.

The Warriors hurt themselves in the contest by failing to account for
Indy’s three best scorers. Indeed, the trio of David West, Danny
Granger and Roy Hibbert scored a combined 54 points on 22-for-37
field goal shooting (59.5 percent). West and Hibbert’s performances are
somewhat forgivable given that the Dubs do not have any big men with
enough size and defensive prowess to truly limit them.

However, Danny Granger’s output in January against the Warriors
had to be disappointing for the coaching staff. On the season, the
Pacers’ starting small forward is averaging 18 points per game on
38.2 percent field goal shooting; and yet he managed to put up 26
points on 10-for-16 shooting from the field despite being matched up
against the likes...CONTINUE READING AT WARRIORSWORLD.NET (http://www.warriorsworld.net/2012/02/28/scope-golden-state-warriors-13-17-indiana-pacers-21-12/)

Saw that and my first question was who is Charles Jenkins and why is he starting.

The #44 pick of the 2011 draft. 6'3", 220 lb PG/SG out of Hofstra. 23 years old. He has started 8 games this year for the Warriors.

He is starting because:

1) Curry is injured.

2) The Warriors like Nate Robinson coming off the bench.

3) The Warriors like Ellis to play SG and not PG.

so you are pretty much saying taller players are better right? so you wouldn't trade Hibbert for D.rose because Hibbert is 7'2 and Rose can't "compete" against that. why wouldn't monta play point if he came here?

The W/L do seem to line up that way, at least in the last 10-15 games. Though I think I'd rather have a consistently scoring on the low block, defensive presence, out of foul trouble Hibbert for any given game. If I had to choose just one factor.

This is what I've been saying the last two years. Guys like him are so valuable come playoff time, but they have to be in the right situation. No, you're absolutely right. The point I was trying (unsuccessfully) to make is that Danny's points are, for whatever reason, not as noticeable as Monta's. I hope Anthem isn't going to bring his Moderate Poster of the Year style to these game threads
Runner-up.

Gotta step up my game, apparently.

Wow. What a dominating performance. LOVE seeing us come out like this after the break.

Take GH out...why is Lance not playing in a blow out game where we are up by 30 minutes with 8 minutes in the game?

Tyler Hansbrough is stealing A.J. Price's shot at garbage time heroism.

No, you're absolutely right. The point I was trying (unsuccessfully) to make is that Danny's points are, for whatever reason, not as noticeable as Monta's. Danny's been solid, but if I was just watching the game and not keeping an eye on the box, I'd never have thought he had 25. But I figured Monta had 20 at least.

True.

There has to be more to it than that. Nothing changed with him when Frank took over. I just have a feeling that he didn't like the fact that Paul leap frogged him in playing time.
By that point, he was just done. He'd been traded twice, only for the deal to fall through both times. Over the summer, it happened again.

Dude was just ready to move on. Can't blame him.

Amundson reminds me of myself when I used to play in a team. Undersized as a 4/5, trying to do a lot of stuff on both sides but failing miserably on the offensive end due to clumsiness :p

Probably trying to allow that unit to gell a bit, and get GH some minutes to get back in the flow of the game.

GH is more important to the team. He needs conditioning minutes to work his way back in. I think it's smart to give him some garbage time at this point. Lance's time will come eventually.

This is why it is slightly disingenuous to say that we should have kept him. Rush wouldn't be having the shooting season he's having without the change of scenery.

True. But we might get better with repetition- ala Danny on the post. ;)

In any event, a game like this is the time to try to develop things.

True, but it shouldn't have gotten to the point where a change of scenery was necessary. That's what upset me about the whole thing.

We lead the league in point differential in the 3rd quarter, despite the fact that we had a couple of games in a row where we did really poorly in the 3rd.
