An Eastern Conference basketball team
is above .500 for the first meaningful time in years and their
resurgence is being led by an awfully tall young man whose stellar
play is garnering all sorts of All-Star and Most Improved Player talk.
He’s averaging 15 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2 blocks per
game. But he and his team are about to take a handbasket ride to
Montana’s capital. We are, of course, talking about Roy Hibbert and
the Indiana Pacers. Over the next 23 games, Hibbert would shoot
36% while averaging 9.8 points, 7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.6
blocks. The team finished this stretch with a 6-17 record and a new
head coach. Kevin Hetrick's Building A Winner

Since the Cavs descended to the NBA’s bottom last year, everyone
has been thinking about moving back to the top. There are a lot of
ideas: Accumulate draft picks...don’t get too good, too fast...don’t
build a losing culture, etc. Every idea has merits, and leaves me
questioning what moves really build winners in the NBA.

This month I will be posting a five part series on Building a Winner.
The posts will look at most of the signature teams of the last 20
years, looking at the personnel moves that drove their success.
Obviously there is no one rule for constructing a great team, but
these posts basically boil down to:
There’s no magic associated with picking high in the lottery
for a few years in a row. Continued trips to the lottery are
more likely to result in mediocrity, rather than building a
championship contender.
Good teams make the right personnel decisions. It’s really
that simple. This happens through all sorts of means, but
the exemplary teams make the most of what they have;
the lesser teams squander it.

In Part one, I’ll start by exploring the first bullet.

Part 1: Why the “OKC plan” is barely a plan

The Thunder are current NBA darlings; they’re young and exciting
and poised to be a contender for at least the next half-decade.
This was accomplished through accumulating draft picks,
maintaining salary cap flexibility, and pulling off shrewd trades
using those assets. This post certainly is not intended to downplay
the brilliance of what OKC has assembled; it’s intended to show
that the plan rarely works this well.

The list of solid role players acquired through excellent scouting
and taking advantage of other team’s cap mismanagement is
impressive: Serge Ibaka, Nick Collison, Eric Maynor, Kendrick
Perkins, Thabo Sefolosha, Daequan Cook; each player occupying
valuable roles within the OKC system. Still though, the difference
between the Thunder and any number of 45 win teams is their
back-to-back-to-back high lottery draft picks: Kevin Durant,
Russell Westbrook and James Harden. Unfortunately, this is
where the whole setup fails to be a “plan”...

CONTINUE READING PART ONE (http://www.cavstheblog.com/?p=7928) & PART TWO (http://www.cavstheblog.com/?p=7950) AT CAVS: THE BLOG (http://www.cavstheblog.com/)

Not sure the game is no tv for me to DVR. ;)

I don't mind losing, it's how the Pacrers have lost that has made me angry. We haven't been very competitive. So many mental mistakes, you'd swear we were a bunch of rookies.

Guys need to get their acts together and blow this pathetic Cavs team out of the water. Double digit victory or it'll be doooooooooooooooooooooooooooom in Pacer-land.

I agree 100%

It's not the losing that bothers me. If we lose to a team who just plays better than us for a night, so be it.

It's the lack of effort and heart in these last games that's been troublesome.

We lack the killer instinct that we've been developing early this year.

I want to see THAT back.

Kind of embarrassed that Tim Donahue continues his "Twitter-Length Preview" series, and PGTV!! is off the air for whatever reason I made up. Makes me sad.

With that said, if we lose tonight, I don't know if I'll be able to handle it. Mentally AND emotionally.

The Cavs are a decent team this year that could make a run for the 8th seed. However, we should win this game. There would really be no excuse to lose this after the last few disappointing performances.

So, let's win. Simple as that.

Seriously, is it so much to ask for Paul George to channel young Vince Carter? I can't stop watching this video, and wishing Paul had the cajones to play like Vinsanity. He has the length, athleticism, if not moreso, but he doesn't have the killer instinct, first step, court vision, or urge to move around the court like Vince did (and still kinda does).

If you can say you don't want to see Paul pulling off spectacular moves like the ones below, you deserve to have your head checked. Even if it IS just two points, think about how pumped the team and fans get, while the opponents, well, they just get jumped over (Fred Weis joke).

More than that, I want the rest of the team to realize that throwing lobs to Paul George on the fast break, whenever he's driving the paint, etc. If Paul can get up as quick as Vince could, and anyone holding the ball can throw it fast enough, Paul can catch defenders off guard, jump into the air quick, and throw it down hard.

I want success for this team so badly.

LoneGranger33
02-15-2012, 06:35 PM
I'd like to win as much as the next guy, but let's not underestimate this Cavs team. As we've seen this season, even the losers get lucky sometimes. They keep a little bit of pride, they get lucky sometimes. They should have won the first time we played them. No Varejao will make it harder to replicate that effort though.

If we don't pound it into the post tonight and take advantage of our big guys I'm going to lose faith in the coaching staff. Semih Erden has nothing but 6 fouls for Roy and Tristan Thompson will get ran over by Roy's size after that. Antawn Jamison isn't going to be looking to get in foul trouble at all and Samardo Samuels shouldn't be a factor either.

I agree with most of your post but I take issue with your characterization of Semih Erden. Is he strong enough, is he rough enough, is he rich enough? I'm not to blind to see; he'll never be a beast, that Erden, but he's a solid player nonetheless.

"Things are different today", I hear my own mother say, Granger needs something today to calm him down. And though he's not really ill, there's a little yellow pill and hopefully he'll take it, because we've been missing that chippiness and edge for a while now. Stupid Kevin Love had to go and spread the word.

He might be fine off the bench but Roy should eat him up as a starter! He's at 7.9 fouls PER36 this year and in his time with the Cavs he has more fouls than he does Points or rebounds. I feed it to Roy and let him score, get fouled or watch the Cavs drop a double team leaving someone else open. But I want Roy with the ball every time down to start this off.

Semih Erden is a quite solid player but I don't remember him standing out for his defense when he was here.

He is very, very foul prone. Actually, if he played 36 minutes he would foul out each game according to Basketball-Reference. He averaged 6.3 fouls per 36 last year and this year he is even worse in that aspect averaging a staggering 7.9 (!!!!) fouls per 36.

He can work on this though and become a decent to good defender which could make him a very good backup Center or even starting material on a middle of the road team.

EDIT: Asher ninja'd me by 8 minutes. Should have been quicker to post and also I should hit refresh once in a while :p

Hibbert just looks a half step slower than earlier in the season on defense (actually, I think this is true when it comes to offense and rebounds too).

Whether it's coming out with his man on the pick and roll, rotating to the next guy, getting back to his man, covering the weak side in the paint - slow all around and it's killing us on defense.

No, I don't get the sense that the Team doesn't care...I just get the sense that they are not used to playing with each other ( the rotations are all off ). Couple that with the fact that we have 2 key Players out....and we get what we have now....we're just not that good.

I'm more disappointed by Hibbert, PG, DC and West......I don't expect much from the 2nd Unit...but I expect more from the Starters.

So if I'm reading the box score right...Lance is our leading scorer? I would be pleased, but at this point if he is our leading scorer, we're probably getting hammered.

Now Roy scored, never mind.

Man Hibbert needs to stop going so far, he goes at least 5 feet away from 3 point line, allowing his man to run straight to the basket.

OK, I'm really upset too but...SCREEEECH!

Maybe Vogel should just dye his sideburns at halftime.

Wow... we have gone from being the 2003 Pistons to the 2010 Cavaliers in a matter of a week.

Anybody think JOB might have some voodoo dolls or something?

I'm not sure I've ever been more disgusted with a Pacers team than I am this one right now. And that's saying a lot.

blame needs to start going on Vogel's shoulders...he's lost this team

D-Jones is a joke. I like how he refused to pass to Hibbert who had position in the post so he could hold the ball, resulting in an ill advised drive to the hoop... resulting in a shot clock violation.

15 assists to 2, Jones/West 2-for-17 and Tyler and PG somehow missed 5 FT already. Also Erden is going to have one of his best games of his career in the first half.

I swear he spends more time running back and forth from the paint and 3 pt line than defending down low

Larry is gonna trade Jones for Erden at the deadline for our big trade.

LB will say, we think he has improved the team. We are looking to get better. We are not done yet.

02-15-2012, 08:41 PM
D. Collison has no idea how to create a shot for others, or use a screen properly! He dribbles around at the top of the three point line for twenty seconds or so, wasting precious time. He is out biggest problem in my opinion...but not the only right now.

I really like DC. He will be a great backup when we can find a real point guard to run the offense.
