Fans aren't buying what Indy's selling

08:02 AM ET 02.08 | During a week when Indianapolis was praised frequently for its showing a sports town while the Super Bowl was in town, the Pacers remained an afterthought. The Pacers announced a crowd of 11,006 fans at the fieldhouse on Tuesday. I didn't go around counting heads, but that number seemed kind of high. It seemed like half the crowd came to see former Brownsburg High School and Butler standout Gordon Hayward. "Absolutely pitiful turnout. Indy's really letting this team down," one person tweeted. "Seriously ... is there an excuse for there being maybe 10,000 people here to watch a top-4 team in the East," another person said. There's no other way to look at it, fans still aren't buying into the Pacers' early-season success.

The Pacers haven't been good in a long while. Even last year when we made the playoffs, we were a sub .500 team. But then when the playoffs came around, we had near sellouts.

Although unfortunate, I think that It's somewhat unrealistic to expect fans to come running in just because they've had a strong start to the season. The more sustained success that we have, the more that fans will turn-out.

Once Roy makes the All-Star game, the Pacers continue their early season success and get PG noticed in either the rookie/sophmore game or dunk/3 pt contest, the fans will start taking notice. Slowly but surely they will be filling into the Fieldhouse. This is our first winning season in years and its still early.

Indy is a bandwagon sports town with regards to our two pro teams. After we make a deep run in the playoffs this year, the bandwagoners will come back.

I also blame the local media. We have one of the best teams, and all the media talks about is the Manning and Irsay story

Yeah, well most of our local media is awful, so we have to expect that.

And those near sellouts was the help of a few thousand Bulls fans, not exactly supporting the Pacers.

It will take some time.

Perhaps, just maaaaaybe... it takes more than 30 positive games (going back to the start of last year's playoffs) to overcome 5-7 years of ********?

These calls for horrible fanship are getting kinda stupid, it's going to take most of this season to get our crowd back, and that's IF they continue to play well. You don't rebuild a fanbase's lost confidence over night. This is a fan base that's been through more than most fan bases have had to endure... the Brawl comprises most of that.

This. And also the fact that we RARELY get any ESPN highlights for our games unless it's against the Heat. A lot of casual fans get most of their sports info from ESPN (sad as that is) so unless it's seen/heard on there, it didn't happen.

I listen to Mike & Mike on my way to work every morning and they rarely even mention the Pacers scores from the previous night. Even the morning after we beat the Bulls they went through all the NBA results with the exception of one... the Pacers! WTF?? We beat one of the "elite" teams in their house and can't even get a mention on the NBA results rundown??

I'm not saying these are the only reasons, but it sure would help to get some mainstream sports media recoginition.

It sounds like he'll be taking over the team once his father passes and will remain the owner. Steve also owned a D-League team so he clearly has a passion for the game.

Lower prices in the club level will fix everything. When Bankers life was built, the club level with servers and such was a great idea, we had an elite team and lots of companies wanted their own corporate block of tickets in club level. But when your team has sucked for that past 5-6 years, you can't sell those types of packages anymore.

Average price in the club level is over $100 a ticket! There is nowhere outside of the balcony you can a buy tickets for less than $60.00. At those prices people will stay home and watch on TV. i can't blame them.

That was an interesting season because the Pacers started 17-24 and ended up 48-34 - yes they went 31-10 after mid January. The first two months of the season there was more talk about how stupid Donnie Walsh was to trade Detlef for McKey and how the pacers team had to be blown up because they had already tried with the current group of players.

This year the team has been good from the start. I think the attendance figures are embarrassing.

Scot Pollard
02-08-2012, 12:09 PM
It's expected attendance will rise very soon.

Saturday night's crowd is looking very good and it should continue without seeing a crowd like the one last night.

The SB took over Indy and it was probably the biggest event held in Indy so that took people's attention. If it wasn't held here, attendance probably would've been higher earlier, but we haven't played that many home games anyway.

Radio shows spoke about the Pacers quite a lot before the SB chaos began and talked about the Colts much less or to just make fun of them.

In the late 90's/early 2000's, the Pacers were often praised for having such great fans. When Indy's teams are doing well, Colts and Pacers, the fanbase is insanely passionate.

All in all, you Indiana loves basketball and their Pacers and they'll be back packing BLF very soon because they can't resist.

I look at this the same way as I do losing weight.

You can put 50 lbs on easy over 5 years, but when you go to lose it you have to bust your *** every day and it seems like progress comes at a slow pace.

The Pacers have put themselves in a bad position for many years, and fans had no reason to watch.

With winning I believe the fans will come back, it will just be a year long process, not week long, and certainly not month long.

FWIW, the best thing they can do is make the playoffs. Playoffs = national broadcast games (except NBATV, yuck).

Besides that, stay out of trouble and keep doing good stuff on the court. So far so good, but it is a marathon, not a sprint.

It does look like we're going to get a pleasant surprise on Saturday night, and against the Nuggets of all teams. It would be nice to actually win that game, but unfortunately, another 2nd night of a back to back, and 4th game in 5 nights.

I will give the attendance to last night's game a pass though. Walking around downtown, it was like a freakin ghost town. People just weren't out, and as one of my friends said, maybe they're tired of being downtown. Probably blew their load over the Super Bowl stuff and had no money or interest in going back.

A more relevant matter is attendance percentage. We're still pretty awful recently but the picture is more accurate. For instance, while the 76ers averaged more than 1,200 more attendees than we did, we actually were closer to capacity than they were due to the size of their arena.

The Magic had a lower average attendance than did the Heat, Knicks, Lakers, Thunder, Jazz, or Cavs yet they sold out to 102.6% of capacity.

Thanks for bringing that out.. We are a small market team.. Even in 2001 when we are right around the top of our game we were just at the top 10.. I'm sure we had a packed house or close to it most nights during that time.

The firing of Rick, hiring of JOB, and end of an All-Star career (JO) all came when the attendance collapsed. Also Reggie, the heart and soul of Indiana basketball fans, had recently retired.

Highlights of the Jazz game were on SportsCenter last night. They were on after they beat the Lakers, Nets (PG was #1 on the top 10 plays), and Bulls most recently.

If the Pacers keep winning, they'll get the recognition they deserve after the season. Memphis played great last season but they flew under the radar too. The Pacers have a chance to grab more publicity because of their ties to Larry Bird but still they have to get over through this regular season, end up in the top 4 in the east, and probably win at least one playoff series.

What is the team hierarchy itself (PS&E) doing to promote the Pacers right now? The local media has been overwhelmed with the NFL due to the Superbowl AND Peyton's situation. Those things are national sports stories so of course they have been sucking all the oxygen out of the room locally.

Besides that, this franchise has had to come back from some really dark places. The brawl followed by Reggie's retirement followed by the wheels coming off the team didn't help. And nobody can tell me that sticking with O'Brien too long and his brand of bad basketball didn't push some over the edge.

Casual fans first need to take notice and then slowly allow themselves to get emotionally attached again as they realize this is a different team, different era, and there's finally a light at the end of the tunnel that isn't another train headed straight for them. The Pacers didn't lose their fanbase overnight and they won't gain them back overnight either.

The local media could probably do a better job (and probably will now that the SB is over... but the Manning thing is still not over), and I suspect PS&E could do a better job. But then again, PS&E has been burned in the past with some campaigns that ultimately rang hollow so they might be just as cautious as the fanbase. There might be more emphasis on ticket promotions than on catchy slogans plastered around 465. But then again, at some point they might need to throw caution to the wind and do a media blitz and hope THESE Pacers don't let them down like past versions in the last decade ultimately did.

Fans are going to have to be won back. It's not going to happen overnight. But right now you have a coaching staff and team that are doing all the right things to win fans back. It's been a while since I could say that.

Also, can they do away with Legends already? Those seats are ALWAYS empty, and it looks horrible on TV. I liked the bleachers when they had them, but maybe there is something else they can do with that section in general. Maybe move Area 55 over there or something?

What the hell are you talking about "most teams would already have headed to greener pastures." Teams don't move very often, and when they do it is almost always because of ownership issues. Teams don't move because of attendance. If that was true, then the 76ers and Grizzlies would have moved from Philly and Memphis a while ago because their attendance has been just as bad if not worse than ours.

Jesus Christ, one bad game on a Tuesday after a sell-out on Saturday and suddenly we're about to move to a city that just lost a team.

I understand this is not always the case with the Tuesday deals and actually there was a deal for this weekend's Denver game. But what graphic-er has posted is very valid.

Some folks would prefer to spend $92.35 (taxes and processing fee) for a seat in the Krieg level to see the occasional Van Halen show than the routine NBA game. Pacers are asking $132.73 for the Miami game, same seats, and are getting it.

I also blame the local media. We have one of the best teams, and all the media talks about is the Manning and Irsay story

I'm not buying this. Indy is a smaller town that a lot of sports towns, and we're really spread out. I watch almost all the Pacers games on TV, but haven't made one this year. It takes awhile to get downtown, it costs money, and it's hard to find the time when you have a family and responsibilities, especially when I can put the game on TV and watch it while helping out around the house. Yes, I'd love to go to a lot of games, but I'd always be sitting up in the $10 seats cause I can't afford anything better, and it is hard to find the time, especially on weekdays. The more a team wins, the more payoff there is when you go to a game. I don't think that makes fans bandwagon, they just realize they are getting better value for money and it is more worth the time, effort and money.

Colts vs Titans in Indy in 2003 didn't sell out. This was a year after we made the playoffs, a game against our at the time nemeis, and was Manning's fifth year as a pro. Manning was already an established superstar, and the Colts had made the playoffs 3 out of 4 years. No excuse this game wasn't a sell out.

I'm not trying to be a smart @ss here, but if you do not know how much tickets are how can you claim people are cheap?

We will be fine. We are already average 1,000 more fans than last year, and looking at the schedule we will have 8 more near sellouts/sellouts (Denver,Miami, NY on a Sat., LAC, Miami, OKC, Boston on a Sat., and CHI). Tix are cheap and the fans will slowly come back.

Speaking of attendance has anyone notice how there have been more people on PD this year?

I remember back in the day it was barely breaking 100 on any given day now it seems like its one of the larger fan forums for a city this size.

Lets talk about the NBA experience concerning the balcony and lets be honest. For a playoff game just to be in the building for that buzz it is worth sitting in the nosebleed seats. But honestly for a routine game you do not feel like you're getting that NBA experience. Once you get past the first ten rows then frankly you're watching ants at a distance. Of course since I wear glasses maybe my eye sight is just that poor, but you feel detached from what is going on.

Tickets need to be cheaper. For me its not even worth going unless I'm in at least club level. I usually only go if I can find cheap (<40 bucks) lower level tickets. If I could get lower level seats for $40 or less every game (except superstar teams) then I'd be there.

Driving from Bloomington+ food+ parking+ tickets.... that schitt adds up for a broke college joker livin off GI bill and a part time job at kilroys.

Who here has ever sat courtside? I did once. Second best experience of my sports-watching life (first was Colts coming back vs Pats in '07 AFCCG).

It wasn't even a game of consequence, and the Pacers lost (to the Hawks), but every true fan should get the opportunity to sit courtside at some point. It's incredible.

What is the team hierarchy itself (PS&E) doing to promote the Pacers right now?..................Fans are going to have to be won back. It's not going to happen overnight. But right now you have a coaching staff and team that are doing all the right things to win fans back. It's been a while since I could say that.

QFT (Did not quote the whole thing to not clog the screen)

Perhaps I am just biased, but I am shocked at how little marketing the Pacers seem to do compared to other taems I follow (mostly the Redskins, even the Wizards to an extent).

Though I admit you may be right with PS&E not wanting to get burned.....again

I bought fan zone tickets for Sat against the Nuggets for the gf and I (Valentines day treat) and they were $40 a piece on stubhub. They should be less than that originally anyway imo.

I lucked out the other day and found some seats on stubhub in Section 20 row 35 for $25 each.....I gobbled those tix up.....I'll be at the Pacers/Nuggets game at that price, but yeah, it looks like even on Stubhub the prices have risen closer to game day.....

Go take a look in the Road Game thread there is a group talkin bout goin to the Hawks game, and getting 12th row for like $40 per ticket....Even just now, on stubhub, you can get lower bowl tickets for $7 each.....You figure it out and see why other teams fill arenas.....

The way I figure, if they dropped the prices, that would get more butts in the seat, more money for parking, and more money from concessions and souvenirs. When I go to a game, I limit myself to 1 drink, and no snacks due to the ticket cost.....Save me $20 on the ticket, and I might spend that $20 elsewhere in the complex....

While I appreciate the sentiment people need to support local sports teams (and just get out more and live life) we are in a TERRIBLE economy.

Things are getting better, but I know plenty of people who dont have a job / have been laid off multiple times.

$10 is $10 too much if you are watching every penny that you spend.

My best friend's mom ran a verizon store and always got really great tickets for free. We got to sit 2nd row halfcourt behind edgerrin james and reggie wayne once and it was an amazing experience. That was a while ago though. The best seats I've had recently were in the 20's behind the goal.

Pacers Average Attendance

2001 17, 888 10th in league
2002 16, 744 16th in league
2003 16, 352 15th in league
2004 16, 544 16th in league
2005 16, 944 17th in league
2006 16, 179 24th in league
2007 15, 359 28th in league
2008 12, 221 last in league
2009 14, 182 28th in league
2010 14, 202 27th in league
2011 13, 538 last in league
2012 14, 030 after 9 home games/28th in league

This really backs up the point that I've made several times about Indy fans. Indy fans, even during the 61-win season, prefer to watch the Pacers from the comfort of their couches.

Unless the Pacers are one of the top 3 teams in the entire league year after year, they'll never average over 18,000 in attendance for a season.

Every christmas, we get some tickets from a friend in the organization that gets us 5 tickets, 2nd row, 1/2 court across from the scorers bench. I've seen the 76ers back when Iverson played, the Celtics last year with Shaq, and the Bobcats this year with Kemba....It's amazing....We get 5 tickets to one game, and my 6 year old has gone all three times.....This year he asked if we could trade in our second row tickets for row one....Poor kid just doesn't understand...The face value on those tickets....$300 EACH....That is insane money....And that was 2 years ago.....

Yeah, I was just looking at possible balcony tickets for future games, and a seat almost exactly like the one I used to have when I was a season ticket holder was going to cost about $37.xx to buy... almost 20 more dollars than I paid per game as a STH.

I think this is a HUGE problem all teams (and leagues are facing now)

It is cheaper to watch the game from home (cost of TV plus cable) then it is to get tickets a lot of the time, not to mention you do not have the built in cost of parking, concessions, etc.

That is not even including the elements, which do not effect NBA games as much, though it does a bit for a place like Indy where you have to drive in the crappy weather to get to the game

My last post for a while because I feel like I am living in this thread: Stubhub is the devil. I get the convience factor, but they ate up a bunch of the cost of my tickets I just sold for the SB. And that is with them making $ charging the buyer a "fee for service"

I wish teams would find another medium besides SH or TM

Ya I wish i could sit courtside. Just don't have near that kind of money and have never lucked into it. A friend of mine used to get a couple seats in the 2nd/3rd row for free from time to time because her dad took care of the Simons property.. Unfortunetly i was never able to go with her.

I agree with people saying the cost adds up to go.. It really does.. even if you sit in the nosebleeds, your gonna pay a good $30 for just one person if you don't really eat/drink and not counting gas. Thats the cheapest. That's why a lot of people just enjoy the view from home, free and closer than the nosebleeds. I go to multiple games a year but will admit i enjoy watching the games at home as well and if the team isn't playing well, im not making the trip to Indy to pay out money and have the possibility of a crap game. (We are playing well, not saying we are playing crap games now, tho they do pop up from time to time.)

Something I would like to add to this discussion is..... thank you to our PD members who are STHs. Thanks for supporting the team and putting down your hard earned money. Honestly if I lived near Indy the Mrs. and I would probably splurge for a half a season package, but to dedicate that kind of funds is amazing.

The reality here is that it's really not a splurge to be STH....If you look at ticket prices for Fanzone Sections 19, 20, 1, 2....higher rows, STH prices are $25 per game. Look for those same ticks on an individual game by game basis, and you're looking at $40+ per ticket with a convenience fee totaling more than twice the seats value. If I didn't live 90 miles from Indy, I would be a STH and sell the tickets that I couldn't use, but since I can only make a handful of games a year, I would be selling a majority of them and don't want the hassle....

It simply amazes me that they can't just lower the per game price of tickets to increase attendance....

I don't know what your living situation is, but 25x41=$1025 for one season ticket package.

Most definitely a splurge for some people.

I don't know what your living situation is, but 25x41=$1025 for one season ticket package.

Most definitely a splurge for some people.

That is "FanZone" Lowerlevel....

Balcony Level US $268.18

You can reference prices here:

It simply amazes me that they can't just lower the per game price of tickets to increase attendance....

I could be wrong but I think the Pacers are 28th in the NBA in average ticket price. (I do not know exactly what that is based on. The season ticket prices (which are a good 25% lower than single game prices) or the cost that is actually charged after all the discounts?

It could be cut in half to $512.50 for a season ticket package, and some people would still consider it a splurge. (Like myself) It's a subjective term, that varies between people.

I don't know that it is much different from the majority of fan bases, but when you have one of the smallest markets it just shows much more.

My trip to the Detroit game showed me band wagons are common outside Indiana. Detroit basketball this year was the smallest crowd I have ever seen.

You know what, we actually have been getting a lot more coverage on ESPN as of late. I didn't expect to see our highlights on sports center at all last night, but there they were. And when we beat a popular team, Sports Center has been showing Pacers highlights, rather than the other teams highlights and then say they lost.

Also Magic and Michael Wilbon have been saying we are the third best team in the east and Bill Simmons loves us. ESPN has definitely been warming up to the Pacers as of late.

When it comes to sports radio, quite frankly, we don't have the fan base to really get talked about, especially right now. Let's be honest, the NFL rules the sporting world. And Mike & Mike is a NFL show pretty much. With the NBA season starting late, right when NFL playoffs are on and the Super Bowl, their NBA coverage is pretty limited. And even though the Pacers are kicking ***, the Mike & Mike fan base doesn't really care about the Pacers.

Going away from the thread title because that's just ridiculous and laughable.

I don't buy into the whole "people can't afford to go", "gas", "tickets", blah blah blah!

Indianapolis isn't any different from most cities and is not a poor city by any means.

It's expected the attendance will go up soon. The Ticketmaster website displays the map showing the amount of seats available and Saturday night, there are a few seats left in every few sections.

With the SB over now, I don't expect to see another crowd like the one last night, the one against Atlanta, etc.

The 76ers, who have been in the same boat as us, have seen a huge increase in attendance and according to their team sources, more ticket packs had been sold during the season after the early success and despite playing some good teams. We'll see the same soon.

We didn't play too many home games while the SB chaos was going on anyway.

Those numbers aren't terrible by any means.

That's well over 90% of the building filled.

Something that annoys me is that people think it's just Indy. Most teams don't sellout EVERY game.

I need to get a gf soon so I could just make her go with me. You can get $25 Club Level tickets tio most tuesday night games. I just bought 7 tickets to NO on the 21st, Lower Level, Center Section 5, row 18 for $200. Ya I know its NO, but im there to see the Pacers play/win. There are good tickets to be found, all you gotta do is look.

I plan on going to as many as I can this year. Especially before the price goes up when people start catching on. I need to just save up for some season tickets. Like a lot of people have already said. People will start going, if the team keeps heading in the right direction. Im just glad to be there watching it happen.

Fanzone ftw, baby! We go season tix for the first time there this year. We're right by A55, it rocks. My wife wants to upgrade them for next year (like go more toward center court or down a level. But I just can't see it for the price difference. Our seats are such a good value (compared to all other seats). So far for the games I haven't been able to make, I haven't had issue selling them for at least what I put into them on Pacers ticket exchange...

The title made me laugh.

Anyway, BLF will be the place to be and expect much improved attendance like the 76ers have gotten with their success. They are/have been in the exact same boat as us.

I've said the same things over and over and have nothing else to say. Just look forward to Saturday night and beyond that!

To question whether we can keep the Pacers is kinda ridiculous. We need to prove that we can win at home against teams we should beat and the fact that we got beat by the Magic on Super Bowl weekend kind of ruined our chance to capitalize on a good opportunity. Had we won that game it would have showed a lot of people how good we are. If we have games like we did against the Jazz I think it will have casual fans questioning if we are the real deal or not, even if we did win. Who knows, I hate seeing the attendance being so low.

NBA tickets cost what NBA tickets cost. the pacers already have dropped prices.

indy is a small market. that is true. it may be too small to support an NBA team. not enough people that can afford those $300 seats or $50 seats or whatever. if that is the case, then there is a chance that the indiana pacers could become the Las Vegal pacers.

but so far, the simons have kept the team here in a marginal market. all i can say is thanx. lots of good, cheap seats in the balcony. expecting courtside seats for high school prices only works if you're going to a high school game.

with the economy picking up, there should be more people with the disposable income to afford season tickets and more people willing to go to individual games. imo, indy is a large enough market to support 2 major league teams. but :whoknows: maybe it isn't. it does cost a lot of money togo to an NBA game if you want good seats.

If this poor attendence keeps up, are the Pacers headed out of Indy? Seattle has all but been promised a team and very soon......

Let the record show that the title of your post and this last quote are editorial spin grounded in nothing substantive. The Pacers are struggling to put people in seats, they're not in danger of going to Seattle.

The Pacers aren't going to magically erase the last few years in the span of a couple dozen games. As for Tuesday's poor fan turnout for the Jazz game, maybe this writer missed it, but our town is still nursing a hangover from spending the last two weeks hosting the biggest sporting event on the planet earth. I was downtown for four days last week; right now you can't pay me to get off my couch, let alone drive a half-hour into downtown.

Not sure what you dont buy about it.

I did a whole white paper in school on the economy and its impact on the entertainment world. There is a correlation between people barely being able to pay their rent (or not being able to pay their rent/mortgage in some cases) and a drop in entertainment revenues.

More disposable income = more money to spend on entertainment. Then you just have to win the battle of having fans pick your "entertainment". But there is no battle if there is no disposable income.

...and you're not considering how much of Indy's median income is tied to "manufacturing", trades work or just "Blue Collar" work in general. Indy may not be "poor" as you put it, but it's definitely a mid-western city feeling the economic pinch. Really, it's only by the grace of God that I've been financially able to keep my season tix because I was a casualty of watching work in my field dry up. This economic situation isn't make believe and I can see how it effects people that would normally have the disposable income that we are discussing!

As for attendance, I'm not sweating the prices that PS&E charges to get into the building... Hell, any kind of entertainment is costly these days. Going to a game in the balcony is close to the same $11 to $14 one would spend for a movie ticket at a nice DIGITAL theater. One thing that I will say is, the price "cliff" between sitting in the "fan zone" and anywhere "better" is pretty steep.

I look around the league, is Indy's attendance really that bad compared to other teams? Given the size of the arena, I think we draw on average what most teams draw.

Outside of say Chicago, Boston, Dallas, LA, Golden State, Portland and a few other teams the attendance is pretty bad across the league.

I think our arena seats around 18,000 give or take. Compare that to say Philly or Atlanta that probably hold more than that is it really that bad to draw 10,000 on a Tuesday night the week after the super bowl? Granted I too want the attendance to be better, and I think it will with time, I don't think it is horrible.

A tuesday night in February is not much fun to go out in regardless of the weather. We go out but we are not normal fans.
