My friend has a Sony rear-projection television that just recently started displaying a yellow zig-zaggy series of lines from the right side of the screen:

Any idea what this could be?

This wouldn't happen to be a Sony XBR2 60 inch would it? Those models had tons of problems with short life on their lamps and optical parts.

An excuse to buy a new television. :D

Not sure, the old projection sets could do some quirky things when they started to bite the dust. Never had any experience with the later DLP models.

I found the problem. Turns out they're called "stationary scribbles," which is caused by a common default in the optical block (most likely the lamp) in many Sony RPTVs, especially the Wega (which is what he has).

Apparently, Sony's replacement program benefits have been substantially reduced as of November 1st, so it's probably time for him to just buy a new TV.
