View Full Version : Predict just the number of wins for the Pacers.

Unclebuck
12-21-2011, 02:33 PM
I know Peck has an NBA and pacers prediction thread, but I always like to do a pacers only prediction thread where everyone picks the number of wins the pacers will get this season.

Just pick a number, don't pick a different number if they stay healthy or if they acquire a shooter. Just give your prediction. I like to average all these after we get everyone's prediction -.

Remember there are only 66 games this year. So -

if you are like me you are used to picking based upon an 82 game season.

50 wins in an 82 games season equals - 40 wins this season
45 wins in an 82 game season equals - 36 wins this season
35 wins in an 82 game season equals - 28 wins this season

I predict this team will win 35 games

I think the Pacers will hover around .500 all season. The lack of training camp will probably hurt the Pacers, along with occasional nagging injury flare-ups for Foster and West. Hibbert will struggle with consistency (again). Some nights he'll be a force and other nights you'll forget he's even there. Hansbrough will be a candidate for 6th man of the year.

Our early schedule is pretty easy and by the time we get towards the end of the schedule I expect our depth to be a huge advantage on other teams that are running out of gas. So I expect most of our losses to come in the middle of the season.

I had said 44 previously, but I am not quite as optimistic at this point.

My updated prediction:

37 wins last year, 82 games.

No OB = +5 wins that he had cost us (at least) during the time he coached last year
No Dunleavy = No change
No Ford = No change
No Solo = No change
No McRoberts = -3
No Rush = No change
Addition of Shaw and Boylen = +3 after they get to know our players in person, and vice-versa
Roy improvement from working with Duncan and hopefully strength training = +1
Improvement from Paul George = +3
Maturation of Hansbrough = +4
Addition of George Hill = No Change
A little more respect from opposition due to late season push possibly = -3
A little more respect for the new style of play from the officials = +2
Hopefully larger crowds as the season progresses to provide energy = +2
Learning curve for adjustments to several new players by all involved vs. improvements when it all gels = Net of no change

So, for me at least, I now would have had a prediction of 51 wins in 82 games, so that leaves me at a shortened season prediction of 41.05, so 41 wins. Yes, I recognize that means we will be right there as about a 5th seed in the playoffs, but things could break either to 4th seed or 6th seed with that record IMO, and if West gets healthy and conditioned and Tyler continues progressing as he has, we could be a handful for anybody come playoff time.

Slow coming out of the gates. After the second week of January I predict some major over reacting. Calling for Bird to resign, doubting Vogel (thus blaming JOB's influence), and trading Granger/Hibbert/DC, Pushing to play the youth (Lance, JPen).

Then we start to play well and gel together. Tyler and PG start to take over on the offensive end and Hibbert gives what he gave last year. George Hill gives us what Jack gave us a few years ago.

We finish 6th seed and take the Celtics to 7 games with a loss.

OK there has been 70 picks to this point.

The average is 35.62 wins, which would equate to 44.28 wins in a full season.

The most popular pick? 37 annd 38 were picked 10 times each.
39 was picked 3 times
36 was picked 8 times
35 and 34 were picked 7 times
33 was picked 4 times
32 was picked 3 times.

A bad run on the road to start the season could take some wind out of our sails. Lots of questions regarding the team (health, chemistry, consistency, coaching..etc) still in the air. A lot of hype this year, which is rare... not buying it just yet, even with the additions. Been a Pacer fan too long, I guess. Would rather be realistic than get myself all pumped up for more disappointment. :o

I think we've improved our roster for sure this season, but there are a lot of variables - new coaching staff, West recovering from injury, young players that we hope/assume will improve, how West/Hill fit in the rotation, cramped schedule from the lockout etc.

I think our depth will help us win more games in this shortened season, but I think having a new system, new players and a lot of (still) really young guys will hurt us. So who knows. Hoping for the best!

I don't know that I am overwhelmed by any one thing. We seen glimpses of this after Vogel took over last year. I guess if I had to pick something I would have to say that I am pleased with how unselfish this group is, which I attribute to Vogel and his staff.

Vnzla81 Ok mine is that the Pacers are going to finish in the 8th seat with 31 wins, David West won't be what many people expect from him, I think he won't be able to play back to backs for a while averaging like 12ppg and 5rpg, PG would score around 11ppg with 6rpg and 3apg, Danny's numbers would go down to 18ppg and 4rpg his defense would be the same, same player, DC's numbers are going to be close to 13 and 5apg and once again we are going to have the same talk about needing another PG, Lance is going to average like 4ppg and 2apg, he is not going to get much playing time, Tyler's numbers would go up and he is going to average like 14ppg and 8rpg, Roy Hibbert is going to average 14ppg and 6rpg, George Hill would take the starting PG position and will average 12 and 5 also but with better defense and we will get eliminated on the playoffs by Miami in the first round 4 to 0.

Actually, you were wrong about more stuff than Tyler.

We're on pace for more than 31 wins and a higher seeding than the 8th. David West has been what most people expected. Danny Granger has been playing better defense. Roy is playing better than what you expected especially when it comes to boards. We are not probable to meet with Miami in the first round in order to be eliminated by them. Miami is not the top seed at the moment as you projected anyway but time will tell.

And, of course, you were wrong on Tyler just like you admitted.

You were right on a lot of stuff. And you do deserve props for the ones you were spot on. But you were wrong about half of the things you said as well.

Well you're scary good if you ignore the number of wins (which we've almost reached with 22 games left), Roy's massively improved rebounding, Danny's improved defense (it most certainly is) Tyler's numbers (to be fair you admitted it). West has exceeded many expectations, as in providing leadership and maturity, reflected in in the winning column (most knew it would take a while, but he's been pretty good considering, and still much cheaper than Nene, which will be seen in future moves we are able to make with that flexibility (Barbosa is just the start). Also there is almost no way we slip enough to play Miami in the first round...

Wouldn't toot my horn about a prediction that is largely wrong  in the most important areas.

You get props for being high on Barbosa though, and though i'm a Collison fan i'll admit that even I wouldn't be against a gradual shift in focus from him to Hill. Perhaps facing backups will energize him and allow him to be a stellar second unit point guard, penetration is killing us, Hill starting will help keep the bigs out of foul trouble and build a larger lead early to hand off to our still excellent bench with DC filling the role Hill has been playing.

At 37 wins with seven games remaining, there's a slight possibility we could finish with more wins than anyone in this thread predicted (Brad8888 originally said 44 wins but revised it to 38). We could end up having a better regular season than even the sunniest of sunshiners predicted. That's pretty remarkable.

Frank Vogel for Coach of the Year.

Somebody predicted 66wins on another thread though

In Feb. I predicted 44-22 in a diff. thread on here.. Since my first post didnt come until Jan. 5th (after this thread was started) I think I should get a pass :)

I originally said 37 in this thread and revised it to 42 on 1/27/12. If they go 1-1 over the last 2, my revised total was dead on.

I have to say that this has been a great season to be a Pacer fan. After all the suffering of the past 6+ seasons, we have a lot to look forward to. The P's are a young, talented and deep team with cap space. While not quite an "elite" team, we could be one next year if we lure the right player in the offseason. Even if we don't, this team has nowhere to go but up with the current lineup.

Thank you Larry Bird!!!

ya , my official post of 38 wins.

But I am seriously thinking with our schedule as it is we will be anywhere between
37 and 41 ..
Once everything "clicks" for our team and we suck it up for a few games here and there early on , I predict quite a few win streaks..

But I am still gonna stick with 38

.

Seems that a decent number of us here were pretty close or spot on ... Kudos PD sunshiners..

It also seems we are "clicking" pretty nicely :D :happydanc ;)

I predicted 44-22 in a different thread, so I'll be off by at least one game, maybe more, but I predicted we'd have the third seed and HCA. But I admit this was near the midpoint of the season, and that originally like most folks, I predicted and would have been happy with a 6th seed.

Too bad I didn't post my pre-season prediction for this team just for the record. But I'm happy that I was right that the Pacers will win 42 games this season (getting there :)) when I'm arguing with my friend about it.

OK there has been 70 picks to this point.

The average is 35.62 wins, which would equate to 44.28 wins in a full season.

The most popular pick? 37 annd 38 were picked 10 times each.
39 was picked 3 times
36 was picked 8 times
35 and 34 were picked 7 times
33 was picked 4 times
32 was picked 3 times.

Below 30 wins - 3
Above 39 wins - 6

So we are 6 wins above the average estimate. Not bad at all :).

40 wins

Our early schedule is pretty easy and by the time we get towards the end of the schedule I expect our depth to be a huge advantage on other teams that are running out of gas. So I expect most of our losses to come in the middle of the season.

I was so close....and I think my reasoning was pretty good....http://www.arizonasportsfans.com/vb/images/smilies/patself.gif

33 wins

Slow coming out of the gates. After the second week of January I predict some major over reacting. Calling for Bird to resign, doubting Vogel (thus blaming JOB's influence), and trading Granger/Hibbert/DC, Pushing to play the youth (Lance, JPen).

Then we start to play well and gel together. Tyler and PG start to take over on the offensive end and Hibbert gives what he gave last year. George Hill gives us what Jack gave us a few years ago.

We finish 6th seed and take the Celtics to 7 games with a loss.

I'll admit that I didn't think we'd be the third seed. Orlando just imploded and I thought Boston would still be above us as well.

Also, I'd happily be wrong and have us grab our 43rd win on Wednesday.

If we win, that's a 65.1% winning percentage. If we lose, it's still 63.6%.

Last year, we were at 45.1%.

Coach of the Year and/or Executive of the Year are in order.

any other year I'd say Vogel for CoY. But what Pop did this year with San Antonio is nothing short of remarkable, even considering what he manages to do every year. I think most people here would say our talent level exceeds theirs (I would)

41 wins.

Going bold, picking a little higher than I probably would, but I'm optimistic. Just played the best team (arguably) very well twice, and did well despite all the flaws and rusts.

Only picked 41 because it was one higher than the highest (at the time). And I still came up short.

I think Pop is the best coach in the NBA, but I don't agree at all with the idea that we have more talent then the Spurs! IMO Duncan, Ginobili (when healthy), and Parker are all better then anyone on our team, even Danny...

On second thought you make a good case. I'd agree TPs been better this year than anyone on the pacers, but I'd still contend that at least from the last month Danny's as good if not better than Duncan and Ginobilli at this point in their careers.

I think talent wise, the rest of our team puts us over the Spurs (barely) but its true ethat their core of Duncan Ginobilli and Parker are experienced and have been together for a long time and that goes a long way.

i still dont think anyone thought theyd win the west after last years playoffs.

I woudlnt be upset if Vogel was 3rd behind Pops and Thibs. Any lower than that and I might be
