INDIANAPOLIS -- Speaking before Friday morning's shootaround, coach Tom Thibodeau said Ronnie Brewer would start at shooting guard in the Chicago Bulls' preseason opener against the Indiana Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Thibodeau added that a determination on whether or not Richard Hamilton makes his Bulls debut would be made later Friday. Thibodeau said he's "not leaning either way" regarding Hamilton.

"Ronnie is starting (Friday), but I also want to see Ronnie with the second unit some," Thibodeau said. "That group played extremely well. We want to look at some different combinations.

"I thought our bench was a great strength for our team last year. They had great chemistry. They can execute, score in transition. They play great defense. They complement each other well. So it is a plus."

Indeed, Thibodeau has hinted at keeping the so-called "Bench Mob" intact, meaning Hamilton eventually could start. Brewer, C.J. Watson, Kyle Korver, Omer Asik and Taj Gibson often played together as the second unit last season.

Thibodeau also said rookie Jimmy Butler would play extensively, assuming he avoids foul trouble of course.

"Heís learning how to be a pro," Thibodeau said of Butler. "He has a great demeanor, excellent attitude and approach to the game. He has a lot to learn. But heís moving in the right direction."

Butler said he's both excited and nervous for his NBA debut.

"Itís always go hard, though," Butler said. "Go hard in practice, go hard in games, go hard in everything you do. Take no possessions off and be a great teammate. Preseason game, practice, shootaround, all of that counts toward going hard."

Thibodeau said the starters would likely play the first 10 minutes straight---again, barring foul trouble---and that the Dec. 25 opener against the Lakers could lead to extended minutes for some.

Derrick Rose likes that, especially since Friday's preseason game is a rematch of last season's brutally physically first-round playoff series.

"Every game we played them was a battle," Rose said. "They hustle throughout the whole game. They have great shooters and chemistry on that team. This will be the same approach. Iím preparing like this is a playoff atmosphere.
"This is like a regular game to us. Weíre not approaching it lackadaisical. Itís time to get better. We need chemistry. We got Rip and Jimmy. The starting five havenít played against somebody new for a very long time. We can use this to our advantage."

Believe me it's to d@mn early in the season (well actually pre-season in this case) but this almost makes me want to do a war cry.

God if we could only get the sound effects of the Indy cars on the overhead again.

Drose is one of the rare superstars who wants all the pressure on him and believes he is the best player on the court at all times even if he isnt. I really respect that mentality which is one the greats like Magic and Bird had and the leadership and effort he plays with is amazing. He hastes to lose more than he likes to win he took the loss to the heat last year on himself I expect him to be improved. I look forward to the battles basketball is better with rivalrys and this should be a fun next 10 years to watch IMO. I really respect the guy more than I respect most. I still just want us to beat his *** every time we play maybe even more than any other team.

Ok, I can't help myself one small pre-season war cry coming up.

Today under the proud banner of the Indiana Pacers our new general takes to the field.

This is no ordinary general mind you this is a man who has been born and bred to be a leader of men. A man with a steel like determination and a vision so pure as to make angels weep.

He will be leading our troops into battle forwarded by the Captain on the field, a man who has seen the battles and has bore the awful oppression of a far lesser general before him. But a Captain who has come through in the end.

It is up to us, Proud fans of the Indiana Pacers, to rise up and support our troops as they once again fight for our honor and dignity.

I ask each of you to join me in what is a rare occasion (pre-season) war cry.

I've definitely never been this fired up for a preseason game before. I'm going to miss JMac throwing elbows at Rose, that's for sure. Saying that, this is me right now:

OK, but his suggesting that this preseason game will have a playoff type atmosphere is just wrong

How do you know how the players will compete for this game?

I've never seen a preseason game ever approach anything like a playoff game. Cannot compare.

Beyond that the key word that Rose used was "atmosphere". That means more than just how the players play.

beyond that it is an insult to NBA playoffbasketball to suggest that a preseason game will have the same atmosphere as a playoff game

I agree with UB and hope the team remains calm and poised. Run our sets and find out where the Coaches need to turn their focus in a short amount of time.

I was wondering when a roll call thread would be started. Is preseason too soon? I would normally think so, but considering we've missed NBA basketball for about 2 months now, I'm not sure.

Damn it feels good to have my Pacers back!

Noah is on the radio talking about how physical the series was and how he "can't wait to hit someone other than a teamate"

Sir, I present to you the tandem of Jeff Foster and Tyler Handsbro

I was really hoping we'd get to see Pendergraph in action. From the interviews he sounds like another one of those guys like Tyler and Jeff that just ENJOYS hitting other people. Hope he gets his knee sorted out.

I'd imagine at the very least coaches are taking these two games as seriously as the last two preseason games, which are usually pretty much reg season intensity.
