Any thoughts as to why this was done now?

Is there any significance to this? (I'm honestly asking, not trying to be sarcastic or anything)

Probably just to clean up the books.

I was hoping Zan Tabak and Tank Thompson were considering coming out of retirement to be our backup C.

You will notice that Solomon Jones was not taken off of the hold.

This. I would venture to say that along with the paperwork for the amnesty they cleared everything off that might somehow be on record against the cap.

I'm sure that what happened on Friday is that after Dunn signed in Milwaukee, someone in the Pacers' FO (Pritchard?) went into the system to release his Bird rights and noticed that whoever was responsible for doing this in the past had neglected to do so for a long time. Or maybe the rules related to this changed in the new CBA?

It's because all those cap holds count towards the cap. We haven't had cap space in so long there was no need to renounce them because hey, never know.

This is an error on the website. If you're holding rights for a player they represent a cap hold. We wouldn't even have cap space with that much going against us.

Besides that, how do you have cap holds on guys who retired? That alone doesn't make sense. How does a guy represent a cap hold when he's already signed elsewhere? lol

Nor McBob.

My guess is that we're keeping the cap holds on the off-chance someone wants to S&T one of those guys (though I guess it's improbable for Solo).

As Heisenberg says, we're doing it now so we can (finally) use our cap space to sign David West. All those other guys' cap holds are still on the books because we haven't had cap space since they retired.

Dang it Larry, the rights to Tyus Edney and Zan Tabak could have been used to land Chris Paul!

Funny I was *just* talking about Tyus Edney today in fact. I will never forget his coast to coast Game winner in the tourney. That UCLA team was fun to watch.
