So, I thought maybe since there's an IndyCar thread maybe Smoke deserves his own. I know we have lots of racing fans here. Tony Stewart just solidified his status as one of the all time NASCAR greats. He's now won a title under three different points formats. He became the first driver/owner to win the cup since Alan Kulwicki. He's had what is probably the greatest clutch performance in NASCAR history. I mean, come on, he won 5 of the 10 playoff races. That's ridiculous. Love him or hate him, you can't deny accomplishments like that.

I normally only watch a couple of NASCAR races a year (Daytona and the Brickyard, and if the tandem racing is going to become a part of Daytona, it may be down to just the Brickyard), but what Smoke has done in the latter part of this season is nothing short of incredible, not to mention turning SHR from an also-ran shop to a championship team in just three years which is a spectacular feat in of itself.

That driving job he did today goes up there with the best I've ever seen.

Now if he could just take another shot at the Borg Warner..... I don't want to see Montoya be the first to win both the 500 and the 400.

From start to finish, one of the best and most entertaining races I've ever seen. I loved how NASCAR offered up free Race Buddy today. I followed Smoke's In-Car Camera which also had his scanner going. He was confident from the drop of the flag. Even with the multiple lengthy pit road stops, he never got angry and never got anxious. He was locked in.

I was hoping someone would mention this. This was truly one of the best single races ever turned in by any driver in any era. I know the whole run he was on was incredible, but this race in particular was just unreal. Just stupefying when you think about it.

Yup, they tweeted it at the start of the race. It was awesome watching him go on restarts. He was passing 4 and 5 cars before making it into Turn 1, and then making Dive-Bomb Passes going into 3. If you ever played the old Daytona USA arcade game, and remember how easy it was to pass cars on the Oval Track at the start, that's what Smoke was doing in real life.

They did a good job of keeping it locked on his Hood Cam when he was making a charge, and then would switch to his Rear Bumper Cam once he got the lead. You could see him really gaining on guys, and you could see him pulling away. He rode the high line like he was on a rail.

It makes me a little sad cause I like Carl Edwards, but what Smoke did was pretty incredible, plus I don't feel bad cause its not like Edwards gave it away the last race or two, I believe he finished 2nd the last 3 races and lost the title.

Yet another reason I love DirecTv: the free NASCAR hotpass.

Seriously, I switched to DirectTV a few months ago and had no clue about this.

Passed 118 cars. Dead last to first, TWICE. That's all you need to know.

100% serious. Theres 4 feeds (1 for Dale Jr and 3 other drivers that change on a weekly basis). 100% free as part of your Directv package. The channels are up in the 800s I think.

I saw him on ESPN earlier saying his guys gave him a great car, he can only go as fast as the car can go, yada yada yada. BS. Edwards had a great car too. Smoke just had a set of brass balls with him the size of Texas yesterday. Those passes where he was diving to the line to go 4 wide and pass on the inside were insane.

Quite a drive by Stewart. I'm not sure I've been more entertained by a race - other than Bristol. He certainly earned and deserved the championship.

But let's not put his accomplishment along with Kulwicki. Alan built his own cars and engines whereas Stewart/Haas buys their from Hendricks. Kulwicki wrenched on his own cars too. I'm not trying to diminish the season Stewart had - not in the least. It's just a lot easier to write a check for a car than it is to build it from scratch.

Wasn't the Haas operation buying their stuff from Hendrick before Tony bought into the team? I know Gene Haas was a Hendrick sponsor for a long time before he bought the team in the first place. They still didn't win jack before Tony came in. Regardless of the comparisons between Alan and Tony, what Stewart did in making this back-marker team into a championship caliber group is in some ways just as impressive as what Alan did. Nevermind that Tony has built his own little racing empire in a pretty short time when you factor in where all he's gotten involved (Eldora Speedway for example)
