NBA gets tough after brawl, spitting incident

After the brawl and the loogie incident a few days back, you knew it was only a matter of time before the NBA flexed its muscles.

Brendan Haywood got the brunt of the punishment (as he should) when he was levied with a three game suspension. Antonio Davis and Eddy Curry each got two-game vacations and Larry "The Instigator" Hughes earned a one-game break. Kirk Hinrich got slapped on the wrist with a $10,000 fine.
Paul Pierce's spit was more costly at $15,000. We wish our phlegm was worth that much money. Imagine the possibilities.
So one of the Smack Gods was in a New Orleans grocery store and spotted Jamaal Magloire. Hornets fans have got to be happy he wasn't spotted hammering McDonald's.

The Suns did the smart thing and locked up 21-year-old Dime cover subject Amare Stoudemire for the 2005-06 season at the bargain basement price of $2.6 million. It doesn't take a Joe Dumars to know that was the right move.

Pacers point man Anthony "Betelgeuse" Johnson broke his right hand and will join Jeff Foster in missing about two months of action. The third Pacer starter who perhaps won't be playing come opening night is a bit more of a concern. "Until we see him out on the court and not having any problems, there's a concern," Coach Carlisle said about Jermaine O'Neal.

If Pacers fans weren't worried before, it's officially time to start; same thing goes for you Ray Allen fans.

One needn't be a psychic, nor own a crystal ball to see this one coming. Bulls power forward, and we use the word "power" very loosely, Tyson Chandler needed to be carried off the court after crashing to the hardwood back first and writhing around in pain. Chandler's legs came out from under him as he collided with Stephen Jackson in an attempt to swat Jackson's layup attempt.

The initial diagnosis is a bruised hip, but with his documented history of back problems, get used to him ghosting in and out of the lineup all season long.

In what is definitely not a surprise to the Smack Gods, Blazers forward Zach Randolph is said to be seeking a max deal before this Sunday's deadline, otherwise he'll be looking to leave Portland after the season. It's the trendy thing in the NBA today to want Gasol money, but we think Randolph might be one of the few players that actually could command that dough.

The kid is a 20-and-10 beast and he's only 23 years old. It's not like Portland is low-balling him with their 6-year, $69 million offer, they just won't commit $17 million more to someone who has had as many problems with the law as Z-Bo has had.

Not that anyone in Boston noticed that the Celtics had a game last night, but the C's took it to the world champion Pistons and won 96-84. Beantown scored the final 7 points of the third quarter and then opened the fourth with a 12-4 run to put the Bad Boys away for good.

Sometimes the world isn't fair. Darius Miles and Darius Rice were both prep basketball stars on a similar path to stardom. Both players considered making the jump straight to the pros following their high school prom, however, only Miles made the leap. Rice, Jerry Rice's nephew, went to school for what many believed to be a pit stop.

Rice ended up staying all four years and was rewarded by not getting drafted. The Nets signed him before camp, but he was cut yesterday.

The moral of the story? if there's enough hype for you to be drafted in the first round, declare immediately.

The Nets also waived Damone Brown yesterday but we don't have a cool anecdote about him so peace, Damone.

We're out like the Red Sox's curse. ...
