I don't even know what to say.

Ayrton Senna's prophetic words ring so true today

"These things bring you to reality as to how fragile you are; at the same moment you are doing something that nobody else is able to do. The same moment that you are seen as the best, the fastest and somebody that cannot be touched, you are enormously fragile."

RIP Dan. Your win at the the 500 this year speaks to your skill.

He will be missed. He was one of the guys who "got it". He realized how special Indy was and how fortunate he was. He was genuine in a way that a lot of them aren't. What you saw was what you got. RIP champ.

How horrible, there is really nothing else to say. As another poster said, Dan really seemed to understand the significance of Indy.

Oh by the way, IRL should be forced to give every cent to the Wheldon family. The driver's warned them that Vegas should not be an IRL track.

RIP Dan. You will be missed greatly.
But why does his twitter say "green!!!" 8 hours ago at 3:48 but I read that he was taken to the hospital around 1:00 and died two hours later?

Probably has to do with local time here vs Vegas time....

Just FYI IndyStar currently has a picture in their gallery of Wheldon, well I'm just going to go ahead and say it, Wheldon's body being loaded on to the emergency helicopter. I don't know how much longer it will be up, but it is pretty clear from the photo that Dan has already passed by the time this is taking place. His body is covered by a sheet on the stretcher and they are not performing any life sustaining procedures. Likely that he was just transported to the hospital to be pronounced dead to help with paperwork the same way Senna's body was. Sort of can't believe they have this picture up on there.

Yeah, the AP had put those photos out before they even announced he had died on Sunday.

Went to Indy Star, did not see that picture.

Cannot beleive they would allow that to be put up at all, pretty crazy.

The picture, I'm not sure his head is covered. I couldn't find a way to save it to my computer so I could really examine it, but I think the white by his head is either the ski mask from his firesuit, or a neck brace. Maybe both. either way it's not a cool picture and if I was the family I'd be furious.

Plus, if he had already passed I'm not sure you use the medivac chopper. They could have just went with an ambulance at that point if all they were trying to do was get his body to the hospital. That makes more sense to me but I could be wrong.

Travmil, there is more paperwork to be done if you declare a driver dead at a racetrack as opposed to the hospital. It is one of the big controversies regarding Senna's death as well, and I think may likely become an issue in Dan's, time will tell though. If they did indeed transport his body to the hospital just to avoid the paperwork, it's the exact same thing F1 is accused of doing when Senna passed away.

To me it looks pretty clearly to be a sheet, I spent a good 20-30 minutes looking at it closely. Like I said can't believe they put it up anyway. The picture is in really poor taste.

I agree. If they used the chopper, I have to think he was still alive. One of the rumors I heard was that they had lost him in the operating room (personally, I hope it was quick and Dan didn't feel a thing), would correspond with the story that Ashley Judd got from Dario about Dan being unconscious but with good vital signs.

Remember, they didn't take Earnhardt to the hospital in a chopper when he was already dead.

Earnhardt was not dead when they pulled him out of the car. He may have been brain dead, but there is video of him being wheeled into the hospital as they squeeze oxygen into his lungs.

Also, like I've brought up multiple times, it has been all but confirmed by the doctor on the scene at Senna's death, that he was dead on the track, but they called in a medivac chopper anyway to avoid the extra paperwork.

Earnhardt died instantly.

"According to Dr. Steve Bohannon, emergency medical services director at Daytona International Speedway who responded to the crash, Earnhardt was killed instantly. "
