This could apply to all sports and their negotiated contracts.

HAVE THEM EXPIRE DURING THE SEASON. It would make getting something done a bit more imperitive. Who cares if they are locked out during the off-season? It's costs nothing to have facilities and contracts shut down at this time. Have the contracts expire on a specific date during the season and maybe they will see the pain of what failure to agree means.

baseball sorta did this in 1994. the CBA ended at the end of the regular season. hello strike, goodby world series.

didn't think it worked out very well.

the lockout sucks, but it is the best way to negotiate salaries and benefits. the owners don't sell any tickets and the players don't get paid. both sides have incentive to settle.

fwiw, i think the negotiations are closer than it appears. both sides seem to be closing in on a percent of the BRI the players get. once that is done, the rest is fairly simple.
