Raleigh, N.C. The driver killed in a bus wreck on Interstate 40 in Raleigh Monday is former Wolfpack basketball standout Lorenzo Charles, WRAL News has learned.

Charles, 47, led North Carolina State University to victory with a game-winning dunk in the 1983 NCAA Championship game against the University of Houston. He had a brief career in the National Basketball Association with the Atlanta Hawks in the mid-80s.

No other vehicles were involved in the wreck and no passengers were believed to be on the bus at the time, said Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue.

Charles was a driver for Elite Coach, a limo, charter bus and car service based in Apex. A spokesman for the company said the bus was headed to Durham to pick up passengers and that Charles had recently passed a medical exam.

The wreck happened around 5 p.m. on I-40 West near the N.C. Highway 54 interchange, closing two lanes of traffic and the entrance ramp from Chapel Hill Road for several hours.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Greatest moment in NCAA Tourney history, and that's coming from a Heel.

It was a big deal in downtown Raleigh. They held memorial services at the NC State campus.

It's really sad to see him go too soon.
