Why didn't they just leave it alone?

It's not the colors that are bad, I like their current colors, but change the stupid logo itself.

Don't care much about logos. However, that team name rocked.

The name Bullets was cool for its time.

Teams just need to stop changing their logos/uniforms so much.

The second Wizards logo I posted was really cool and it would probably follow up with cool uniforms.

DC stands for dodge city for a reason and that's why the changed the name from Bullets. However, Wizards is just a terrible name for a team, sounds like something a bunch of nine year olds would vote on.

I actually like Washington Senators.

I don't think the league is letting teams change names.

Actually, someone correct me if im wrong, but I think teams are allowed to change their names and such when they want. The major issue is that there are a lot of expenses in rebranding a team so it's just not worth it most of the time. The number one example I can think of is the Bobcats, whose name was decided by a former owner to celebrate himself but now makes no sense. They have thought about changing names but it's just a costly process.

And yes, DC stands for District of Columbia. I think "Dodge City" is just a nickname the locals have given it.

Hell yeah, I remember when DC took them from us and we figured they changed the name to just stop being associated with Bmore. But they still use the Bmore stats and history so I always call them the home team.

Wizards ain't that bad on a name, it doesn't say "Badazz" but it's cool. I don't think the name will be the same for very long anyway as the new brass has wanted to change the name for a while now, but those things take time. I love the idea of changing the colors to red white and blue, it has always fit the Bullets/Wiz

idioteque
04-30-2011, 06:26 PM
The new brass will likely change the name, but I don't think they will ever be the Bullets again. Abe Polin, the recently deceased owner whose family sold the team, was beloved in Washington and his decision to change the name to the Wizards was embraced at the time because Bullets was seen as an offensive name given all the gun violence in DC. I don't think people want the Bullets name back, they just hate the Wizards name.

I love the Senators name as well. And "Dodge City" is just local slang here because of the high levels of violence in DC. It isn't as violent as it used to be by any stretch now though.

The name Bobcats fits in with the general CATS theme in Charlotte (to go with the transportation system and Carolina Panthers). Like you said, they've considered changing names (I thought the Flight would have been cool seeing as Jordan purchased the team), but there are major costs associated with this. Just to change all of the signage in the arena and discount all of the merchandise in the team store will cost millions.

I thought I read something before the start of the season claiming the Wizards were planning on going back to the old "Bullets" name after this year.

I don't think that Red logo is going to be their new logo next year.

Actually, I heard Bob Johnson explain the name "Bobcats" on an interview with B.E.T.

ndcoltsnpacers was absolutely right when he said that it was to identify himself with the team. B. Johnson explained it as, "he wanted everything to be right because the team has his name on it". When the interviewer chuckled and asked if it were coincidence. Johnson actually stopped the interviewer and told him... "No coincidence he wanted the world to know where the buck stopped with this team!"

I've thought of this scenario many times. I usually ended up with Utah having the moniker "Stars" to tie their history with the ABA team that showed that professional basketball could work in Salt Lake City.

I also liked the name New Orleans Brass as a contingency to not getting Jazz back. The Brass name was the name of a minor league hockey team that played in NOLA when the Hornets moved there, but are no longer there making the name available. Heck, it may be a moot point in a couple years as this franchise always seems to be on the razors edge!

As for the Bobcats... I always thought bringing another ABA name back for this franchise would be the way to go. I'd say rebrand them the Carolina Cougars. The logo could practically stay the same because I believe the old Cougars logo is close to the current Bobcats logo. That way you get a bit of regional marketing and scrub that egomaniac's name from the franchise!

Yeah I know it was definitely named after Johnson but what I'm saying is that it goes along with the overall theme in Charlotte right now. I was primarily responding to the claim that the name is meaningless now.

I work for a company that has the NBA license. We've received logosheets for next year for the Wizards. I can confirm that the red, white, and blue logo is correct. Their secondary logo is a "dc" with the tail of the "d" looking like a hand, just like the old bullets logo, complete with a basketball over the "d." Their uniform wordmarks will be in the same style font as the old Bullets logo. Logo and uniform should be unveiled on 5/10.

Kind of a cool perk, getting to see the new designs before they are unveiled. There are minor changes on other teams, but the Wizards are the only one doing a complete overhaul.

MyFavMartin
05-02-2011, 03:38 PM
I thought it was funny thinking about how the NBA considers the Bullets to be a non-PC name, yet the commentators on NBA League use the term "under the gun" constantly.

I can see that they're trying to incorporate the red, white and blue for it being the nations capital, and its better than what they've got, but I don't care much for it or the "Wizards" as a mascot.

As for Dodge City, I think it would refer to Baltimore more than DC unless you're talking about the traffic... though it's not as bad as Atlanta.

The uniforms are way too colorful and not fit for an individual team.

I don't, i'm only 19, so I really wouldn't care if it was "vintage". The change would be pointless, and the nostalgia would only last one season at most (nobody talks about the Warriors going vintage anymore). After that, they would be right back to the drawing board.

I don't, i'm only 19, so I really wouldn't care if it was "vintage". The change would be pointless, and the nostalgia would only last one season at most (nobody talks about the Warriors going vintage anymore). After that, they would be right back to the drawing board.

There was plenty of talk last year of GS going throw backs, I really like the Bullets look it is a great uniform and the old school look with the modern touch is great.. I hope we do it pretty soon also.

Wizards isn't a bad name and the primary logo isn't as bad as I thought, but Bullets was cool.

Teams don't usually change their name anymore unless they were to move away.

The Redskins really need to change their colors to red, white, blue.

They're the only team now in DC who don't represent the country.

One problem with this suggestion: there's more tradition in one Redskins' urinal than in the Wizards', Capitals' and Nationals' facilities combined.
