View Full Version : 2011 NBA Playoffs: (3) Dallas vs. (6) Portland

The banged-up bunch keeps re-loading, and the Blazers have once again persevered to the postseason, despite major injuries to key players. Behind the acquisition of Gerald Wallace and the inspired performance of LaMarcus Aldridge, Portland has become the lower seed nobody wants to play.

Dallas, meanwhile, is the higher seed everybody wants to play. Their miserable postseason history post-2006 still haunts them, and despite their excellent season, they will once again be tested by their own demons.

Prediction: Portland seems almost too obvious an upset pick, but since I haven't taken one yet, I'll go with the Blazers in 6.

I am going with the Blazers in 6. Purely on match ups. Wallace is going to give them fits. Roy will have his way. Dirk will keep it close, but his help will be underwhelming.

Likely the closest series of the first round. Fully healthy, the Blazers would probably beat Dallas, but had they been fully healthy, the Blazers would probably have been a higher seed.

Experience or youthful exuberance in the face of adversity?

I will go with youthful exuberance, Blazers in a very hard fought 6. If it goes 7, the home court Mavs win, but my actual prediction is Blazers in 6.

Unless something unusual happens, this should be the best series of the first round by far. And the Mavericks should win it. But I don't think they will. If this is a short series, the Mavs will win it. But if the Blazers steal game 1 or 2, it'll go the distance and the Blazers will win.

Blazers in 7.

You can see the similarities between the Magic and the Mavs. Two dominant players with unreliable supporting casts. Having the amazing franchise player is surely nice, but when the NBA is very competitive, you need more than that.

With that said, they'll probably rebound and get the second games. Such is the playoffs.

Buck, I agree that that is most likely, though pretty unfair. They're just not built for the playoffs. (Sorry to point out the obvious.)

Boston/NY and Lakers/NO are going to be dissapoinments I think, I don't even think Boston needs Shaq to win the series, they should let him rest for the second round.

With a healthy Brandon Roy, Portland wins both games. They just don't have a closer right now, and Nate McMillan isn't that great of a coach for late-game situations. Their offense tends to disintegrate in the money time.

Do they beat the Mavs with a healthy Butler and Beaubois?

Probably not with Butler. Beaubois had been in a hell of slump since coming back from his foot injury, so I don't think he would have made much of a difference either way.

Brandon Roy will NEVER be healthy again. He will NEVER be the star player he was for a couple of seasons. Charles Barkley said it years ago about another player (I think it was Tim Hardaway at the end of his career), "He's not injured. He's hurt." You don't come back fully from being hurt, and Roy is hurt.

In fact, this is my bold prediction for the summer. There will an amnesty provision in the next CBA (like the Allan Houston provision in the previous CBA, although this will be called the Gilbert Arenas provision) where teams can cut a player and have that player not count against the cap (or luxury tax) while the player gets paid the full salary. Using that provision, the Portland Trail Blazers will cut Brandon Roy.

Indy has the Colts, Hoosiers, Boilers, and Bulldogs to root for as well.

By that logic, Portland's got Oregon and Oregon State to root for. Oklahoma City's got Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to root for. They're not the only show in town either.

We saw a similar crowd Thursday night.

It'll depend on our success and we're in the right direction and everyone knows it now that we're in the playoffs.

I'm not talking about the other teams in Indy. People will fill an arena for a good team no matter what.

There's plenty of teams in this league who suck and are have other teams in the area like the Warriors and they still have a great home crowd.

What do you mean 'no chance'. They were up 2-0 in the Finals. Sounds like a chance to me.
The problem isn't Dirk. He's been ridiculously good and clutch for the last 5 years. It's that their second option is... who? Peja Stojakovic in this series? Kidd overall? Maybe Marion one game out of 10? With Butler healthy, they are fine. Now, they have no depth and the starting lineup isn't that great either.
Recently they even tried to play Kidd at 2, that's just miserable.

Oregon and Oregon State are pretty far from Portland and only Oregon football is worth cheering for and played at a completely different time of year.

Same with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Those are football schools.

Indiana is a basketball state with several good programs to root for that do compete with the Pacers.

The Warriors are the only NBA team in a market with over SEVEN MILLION people. Not hard to fill a stadium in a metro area of that size.

My point is not who else is in the area.

Back when the Trail Blazers sucked and had a bunch of bad guys, no one wanted to go to their games.

Now that they're winning, they fill the place every game.

The Pacers are not in any kind of rivalry with anyone in the area. They have the fans. They only rival who they play to get wins.

I wonder if he'll play a factor for the Mavericks, if they haven't gotten eliminated yet.

To be fair, Blazers fans started tuning them out when they were still a playoff team. The 99-01 stretch was brutal for their local image. But that's a very specific situation, an exception, when the players do everything they can to get the fans disgusted. It was much worse than the Pacers in the thug era.

Overall, I agree. I see no reason why Pacers can't regain attendances. It won't be easy, but it's possible. If Memphis can get those huge recent crowds, with smaller city, warmer weather, huge unemployment rate, and lots of ways to spend your evenings, then so can the Pacers.

I just think that if Dirk is just best player you don't have a chance to win a championship.

They were up 2-0 in the 2006 finals before Wade caught fire. They did choke, but they still were very close to winning it all.

It would help to have Butler and Beaubois healthy, but even without those two, I'm not ready to write the Mavs off just yet. They are not going to blow an 18 pts fourth quarter lead in every game.
