View Full Version : 2011 NBA Playoffs: (2) Los Angeles vs. (7) New Orleans

Kstat

Chris Paul vs. Derek Fisher is one of the biggest singular mismatches of the playoffs, but ironically, this series itself is just as lopsided the other way. The Hornets were arguably the best team in the NBA for the first full month of the season, but David West's injury killed their momentum. They've gotten by on Carl Landry, but that won't be enough to give the Lakers a fight.

Prediction: LA in 4

Lakers sweep.

CP3 can only do so much. And without David West, the offense and inside presence of NO has weakened. Ariza may be able to guard Kobe effectively, but nobody can easily guard Pau.

I don't think this will be much of a series. Only possible ray of hope for the Hornets is the Lakers struggle against good point guards.

The outcome of this series will never be in doubt

With CP3 probably already in heavy negotiations to play absolutely anywhere else but NO, the Lakers are already into the second round. The games are pretty much a formality due to TV obligations.

I'm still surpised the Hornets had as good of a season as they did. Even with the Lakers' late-season struggles, I look for them to have little problem with Nawlins.

LA does not look ready to play. DJ Mbenga and Aaron Gray are beating them up.

Did not expect such a lackadaisical start from the Lakers, and I did not expect such physical play from new Orleans. They came out looking to hit people.

Well, bummed about the loss yesterday. That obviously is more important.

But as a Pacers die-hard living in Los Angeles, let me tell you...

I am pretty damn happy right now about the outcome of that game! HAH!

I am happy with ANYONE but the Lakers winning this year. Preferably not Miami, but even that would be better than the Lakers.

Agreed. If they get past N.O. they are in for trouble.

Personally my hope is that when the Lakers get knocked out of the playoffs this year, they do it in the most explosive, chemistry destroying way possible while burning as many bridges as they humanly can between them and their fan base (Kobe is well on his way).

I don't think he really cares. The disparity between Rose, D-will, CP3, Westbrook, and Rondo isn't big at all even if their games are totally different.

If one of them has a good stretch, anyone can argue they are the best PG in the league.

Rondo is so far behind those other 4 it's not even funny. He is a great passed, but I think his assist numbers might drop off by 3-4 per game if he was not on the Celtics, you add in the fact that you can't trust him at the end of games...at all...and it becomes pretty cut and dry that act best he's a distant 5th best PG in the NBA.

It is facinating watching the difference between players like Westbrook and Rose and comparing them to a player like Chris Paul. All three are extremely effective but Paul goes about it in a different way. Paul is like a surgeon carefully carving the defense into little pieces. Rose and Westbrook are like bulldozers destroying everything in their path

Trader Joe
04-18-2011, 11:15 AM
To me Chris Paul is the best player to watch in the NBA when he's playing at the peak of his powers. He's a virtuoso with the ball in his hands. The game is his orchestra.

He would have made a heck of an attacking midfielder in soccer.

Westbrook and Rose remind me of a hybrid Clyde Drexler/Allen Iverson. Quick dribbling, fast gears of AI, but the unrelenting attack of Clyde.

Maybe a better version of Kevin Johnson.

CP3 is the best passer right now in the NBA. Nash-level or Kidd-level type of passer. He sees his teammates for great scoring opportunities even if he's not attracting help defense from opponents.

Rose and Westbrook becomes effective passers because they attract defense and leaves 1 or 2 open teammates.

Chris Paul is the best point guard in the league, it's not even that close in my mind, and the romanticizing of Rose by the entire world has reached just crazy levels. I really just don't get it, Rose is barely a top 10 player in the NBA and yet somehow he's the best and runaway MVP? Guy is clearly great, but he's no CP3. Could you imagine how bad that Hornets team would be without Paul?

Kstat
04-18-2011, 02:49 PM
He doesn't bring it in the regular season like he used to.

I'm not sure if he's the best PG anymore, but he remains the best pure passer.

That said, Rose deserves the MVP for how hard he played all season. Paul simply did not bring everything Rose did to the table every night, nor did anyone else. This is about production and wins, not raw talent.

Trader Joe

Still, Paul's the runaway starter for Team USA at point guard in 2012 IMO assuming he's healthy.

Rose is the most unstoppable player in the NBA right now. His team won 62 games more than any team in the NBA and his supporting cast is only marginally better than the Hornets, so it is obvious why Rose is the clear MVP

ilive4sports
04-18-2011, 03:43 PM
Rose and Paul are two different types of PGs. Paul is your more traditional PG, but can still light it up when needed. Rose is a scoring PG who has the passing skills and ability to run the offense. I think Paul is the better point guard in the truest sense of what a point guard traditionally is.

Is he the better player? I'm not sure about that. Rose certainly deserves MVP this year. People are just doubting how good he is, which I don't understand. Anyone who watched the first playoff game saw how great this kid is.

DemonHunter1105
04-18-2011, 03:52 PM
I try to rationalize Rose not being that good because I don't want him to be. If Chicago didn't get so dang lucky to pick him I wouldn't be nearly as mad about it. Chicago is in our division and I really despise most of their "fans" to an unhealthy level.

But then I remember Rose plays for USA, I realize he is that good, and I feel a lot better.

Unclebuck
04-18-2011, 03:57 PM
Most experts and those who watch him more a lot believe Paul has not fully regained his quickness since the knee injury. he doesn't seem as explosive as he was 3 or 4 years ago. But it was fun to watch him yesterday.

He's scared of getting hurt again, so he doesn't take as much contract as he used to. He showed in the playoffs that he's still got the ability to be the 2008 Chris Paul that made the rest of the NBA look like pylons.

I'll take him over Rose and never look back, I know that CP3 has been injured all year long but a point guard like him has a longer career than a guy like Rose that gets punish a lot.

I was thinking along the same lines. Rose RELIES on being faster and stronger than anyone else at his position. Once he hits 30, I don't think he will be nearly as dominant.

Paul is a much much better shooter, passer, and at least as good or better leader. Those things usually stand the test of time.

That being said, I think Rose wins a ring before CP3 unless Paul makes another super team somewhere with Dwight (Indiana please???)

This whole discussion is debatable in my opinion though.

I would take him over Rose. I think it is easier to pair CP3 with other players. I think CP3 will be the starting PG for Team USA for that reason as well. He doesn't need to score to be effective. Rose is most effective when he is scoring because then he can create for others. CP3 is a better creator and I like that at the PG position

Pau Gasol is sooo weak. Landry is out-muscling him and putting up a good fight against Bynum when he has to guard him.

I think playing Kobe on CP3 isn't working out so well for the Lakers. Kobe can't get any rhythm on offense and has to spend every possession chasing him all over the court on D.

Lakers still winning mainly due to other players besides Kobe/Pau.

After watching that game, I will not even hesitate to take CP3 over Rose. Rose is the better SCORER than CP3 (although I think it's more of him shooting more shots), but CP3 is the better POINT GUARD than Rose. He relies more on his great court vision and good play execution. That is Kidd-like or Nash-like, and look how much they have lasted in the league.
