View Full Version : Idea for the future roster

why don't we try to get all the local NBA players from Indianapolis to come back to Indy? I have seen several people post about EG coming back to Indy, but why stop with him? sure he is probably the best of the local guys, but i think it would be great for the city to try and get as many local kids as we could. These guys would hopefully bring some passion and pride by playing for their hometown. As long as it makes sense, i think we should target the local kids in the near future.

Greg Oden- sure his career has been a bust because of injuries. maybe if he came here he could stay healthy and turn his career around? I think the risk is worth the reward.

Courtney Lee- even though he is young, he is already becomming sort of a "journeyman". He is playing on his thrid team in just his third season. If the price is right, why not have him settle down as a Pacer?

Eric Gordon- would love to see him become a perennial all-star wearing a Pacer uniform. We could potentially have the money to sign him long-term.

George Hill- has made a name for himself playing in San Antonio, and is probably due a hefty pay raise whenever is rookie contract is up. not sure we could pry George away from the Spurs.

Mike Conley- just got a contract extension from memphis. we probably couldn't get him unless we traded something significant for him. Not sure he would make sense.

Jeff Teague- hasn't really proven himself, but did play well in his last game against the Pacers. Once his contract is up, and the price is right, we could possibly make a run at him.

Rodney Carney- a solid verteran presence. couldn't hurt signing him to the league minumum.

Gordon Hayward- i'm not going to say anything about him. too polarizing here on PD.

Thoughts?

Jared Jefferies, Zach Randolph, I'm sure there are few others missing.

i want guys from Indianapolis. should have been more clear. jefferies is from bloomington, and Randolph is from Marion.

You can't just get someone because they are from Indy. The reason people want Gordon here is because he is a damn good player.

true, but don't you think it would be cool to have a bunch of quality players from Indy playing for the Pacers? it isn't like the players listed are bums.

Well, why not entertain the idea to play guys from Bloomington or Marion for the INDIANA Pacers, too? Randolph is obviously the best of the aforementioned players (apart from Gordon maybe)

Yeah we are the INDIANA Pacers after all.

Also, I'm sorry this is a terrible idea.

The only player I really want and would make us a really good team is Eric Gordon.

2012 should be interesting for us. I hope we make a strong push to get Gordon. He'd probably love to come back and the Clippers are probably aware that he would want to come back to Indy.

I'm in favor of this concept, but not necessarily all those mentioned. I'd be more than happy with George Hill and EJ, obviously. I wouldn't necessarily mind Courtney Lee, either.

And as far as Greg Oden goes, once again, if he took much less money than he should expect to get, and was secure with playing a back-up role to Roy until some serious development/durability is shown, I don't see why having him back would be too horrible.

If nothing else, he provides another big, strong body for Roy to practice against, which I feel is more important than having James Posey's "veteran playoff experience" helping from the bench. And in the case that he does stay healthy, perhaps makes a Blake Griffin-esque rebound from his latest injury, we nabbed a great center who knows how to play, and who will provide to his hometown team for years to come.

Eric Gordon is the only player that I am interested in from the list.

I think the other players that you listed would be too much of a risk or over-payed role players.

To accomplish this, here's what the Pacers will do:

1. Trade Granger, Lance and George to Clippers for Gordon, Kaman & 2nd rd pick

2. Trade Roy, Posey & 2nd rd pick to Portland for Oden

3. Trade DC for George Hill

4. Trade Hansbrough and Kaman to Houston for Lee, Brad Miller, 2nd rd pick

5. Trade Rush, Jones and 1st rd pick to Utah for Hayward

6. Trade Price & 2nd rd pick for Teague

7. Sign Z-Bo to 4 year/50 million dollar deal

8. Sign Jared Jeffries to a 2 year/3 million dollar deal

9. Sign Carney, Luke Harangody & Sean May to the minimum

10. Resign J-Mac

11. Draft Jajuan Johnson & E'Twaun Moore

12. If Skiles gets fired, we hire him as a coach and hire Rambis as an assistant along with Terry Stotts, Calbert Cheaney and keep McCarty

12. We hire Kevin Pritchard as our new GM

13. We hire Jerry Sloan as a Senior Advisor

14. Larry Bird buys the Pacers from Herb Simon

New lineup:

Hill, Teague, Moore
Gordon, Lee, Carney
Hayward, Jeffries, Harangody
Z-Bo, McRoberts, May
Oden, Miller, Johnson

New starting 5: George Hill, Gordon, Hayward, Z-Bo & Oden
Bench rotation: Teague, Lee, Jeffries, J-Mac & Brad Miller

This team needs 2 things badly.
1. A PF/C who is defensive minded. This would make a 3 man rotation of Roy, Tyler, and the Big. Possibility? = Trade for Andersen Varejeo maybe?
2. A SG who can get his own shot. Of the guys we think are available, I would probably take Mayo first.

A bigger pg would help too. Dont think an upgrade over DC is out there unless we could get George Hill from the Spurs somehow!

If they are from Indy, great. But why would they want to come back? How many players in the past wanted to come back until they were on the downside of their careers?

A team of Hoosiers representing the Pacers we are bound to end up with more rings than Bill Russell!!!

Am I the only one hoping Atlanta gets their asses handed to them again? People forget they got massacred in the first round last year and they're coming into the playoffs losing 6 straight. They're capped out and it's not like their roster's a few minor tweaks from really contending. Maybe they're content with winning 50ish games a year, I don't know, but it makes sense to put one of their 4s (hi Al Horford, you dreamy *******) on the market.

Pursue that unlikely scenario, and give Houston a couple 2nds for Terrence Williams. BOOM, way better.

I am more interested in putting a team together regardles of where a player is from. Building a team is difficult enough and if you were to limit yourself at all with even the thought of acquiring a guy based upon where he is from, you are hurting your chances of being a good team

So no

I realize I'm taking the suggestion more seriouslythan it is probably intended, but it is not a good way to build a team

Indianapolis is not exactly known as a mecca for big time free agents, so guys from Indy may be more willing to consider it. But... they need to be good enough first.

This is a team a hardcap could hurt and force to unload a good player.

I'd rather have Courtney Lee from Houston.

A couple of years ago right after Greg Oden was drafted by Portland, I asked the very same question the OP raised: "Why hadn't the Pacers drafted any of the local talent considering how often we've heard over the years of how Indiana is such a huge basketball state?" It just never made sense to me that they'd ignore all that Hoosier talent (see OP for the list).

But finally, someone in the front office got the hint and pulled off a masterful trade that netted George Hill. Other than Zack Randolph, I can't think of another local fan favorite I'd want to see in a Pacers uniform. Now, granted you can't fill your roster with nothing but local boys, but considering that both George Hill and Zack Randolph (along with a few others from the list) are still very well liked about town, I saw no reason why Pacers management couldn't lure one of those guys here. I'm glad they finally managed to get one of them to come here. If George Hill plays up to his expectations, it's going to do wonders for the Pacers' bottom line in terms of increased attendence and viewership.

Welcome Home, George Hill!

I wonder whom else is being targeted? Rodney Carney makes sense to take TJ Ford's roster spot

I would have zero problem taking a good strong look @ Teague (UK) for the 2012 First round.

he is a hell of a player too bad he hates basketball. My buddy is the backup pg at pike and good friends with him. Teague is only playing for the money and he hates playing. He will still be a hell of a pro but my friend telling me that is big red flags. He might really rise up the board and maybe be a 5-10 pick he is really good. I really doubt he will be there unless he has a terrible season or we have a terrible season.

this is silly, but on a side note. I do sometimes wish there was a States Cup (kinda like Euro Cup for soccer) where states compete every 4 years. It would be cool. Indiana would have to be up there.

Indiana has a decent crop of young up and coming PG. It is going to be interesting to see b/t Teague/Ferrell who has the better career college/pro. I dont think either would be as good as Mike Conley Jr.

I dont know about the second tier of players NC has Smith Riveria (transfer) R Johnson (Pur) Holloway (LN/IU) but it would not be impossible to see 4 Central Indianapolis kids going in the first round. That does not include the Zeller boys.

Rodney Cardney is not a good option right now b/c the Pacers lack bigs. Be sensible. Now if the organization makes a trade 3 -1 and we need to sign a player & Britton Johnson is over seas & under contract then by all means yes sign Rodney.
