View Full Version : 2011 NBA playoffs: (4) Orlando vs (5) Atlanta

I figured I'd get the ball rolling again, since we're in for about a week of not much going on.

A repeat of the most lopsided sweep in NBA history, and little reason to believe this year will result in a different outcome. Orlando isn't quite as good as they were last year, but neither is Atlanta. Orlando overhauled their roster, while the Hawks brought everyone back, sans the Bibby/Hinrich swap.

Key matchup: Kirk Hinrich vs Jameer Nelson/Gilbert Arenas

As much as Howard beat up the Hawks last season, Nelson is the one that broke down the defense and got the ball into Howard's hands. Atlanta's one and only chance to get their transition game going is if Kirk is able to keep Orlando's guards in front of him, and make somebody else create offense.

Prediction: Orlando in 6

Although the backcourt of both Teams has changed....some more then others.....the frontcourt is essentially the same.

What was the key in the last playoffs when they met?

Was it the Frontcourt for either Teams?

Or was it the Hawks inability to properly defend at the PG spot ( hence the change from Bibby to Hinrich )?

One more thing....does that whole "technical fouls/suspensions" penalty get carried into the playoffs for Dwight?

Kstat
04-09-2011, 07:53 PM
No. Everyone's tech count re-sets once the playoffs start. I think the magic number for a suspension in the playoffs is 7.

Atlanta had no answer for Howard, but they also had no answer for Nelson breaking down Bibby and having his choice of either Howard or a wide open shooter. Better perimeter defense at least gives them an outside shot at being competitive. You can't focus on sending double teams at Howard if you're also sending help defenders at Nelson.

I'm tempted to take the Magic in a sweep, but I can see a game or two where their shooting abandons them. Even with Howard, Orlando tends to live-and-die by the jumpshot.

Magic in 5.

How healthy is Smith going to be for Atlanta? He needs to be 100% for them to have a chance.

KingGeorge

If Smith isn't healthy, the Magic take this series in 4.

If Smith is healthy, the Magic take it in 5.

Howard will be Howard, and the Hawks defense isn't good enough to stop the Magic shooters.

Surprisingly, one of the keys to this series is the health of Jason Collins.

Atlanta actually won the season series, 3-1, in part by holding Howard to 43.1% shooting due to Collins' defense.

Still, I'm with KStat. Magic in 6.

Orlando in six, the Hawks have been playing like crap lately.

Orlando in 4.

Kirk can probably contain Nelson, but with Hedo at Orlando, there is always a 2nd PG to help orchestrate offense, especially with Howard. Plus, Josh Smith's health is still uncertain.

Another key is Arenas. If he'll explode offensively in the playoffs, then it's game over for Atlanta.

Orlando in 6 due to their reliance on the 3 and the likelihood that they will miss more now due to having lost a little of their lift from their legs.

I fell kinda bad for Dwight. He gets decked every single play and it's a regular 2 shot foul but he's so strong that when he fouls someone with any force it's a flagrant. And the fact that he has terrible teammates. There's no doubt he's gone when his contract ends.

Their coach sucks at calling plays, they were talking about how their offense is not that good because they only do Iso plays, by the way Jamal Crawford can create his own shot,is clutch and is the 4 points NBA leader, Danny not so much.

edit: By the way, in his interview he said that that was his "sweet spot", here is a video that proves that:

Point is, this is a players' game and it is even moreso come playoff time.

Defenses game plan for end of game plays every bit as much as the offense. Remember what Granger said: the Pacers had about 3 other options on that last play, but the Bulls took each of those options away. They were ready for it. The screws tighten significantly on defense in clutch situations, and it will be especially in the case of the playoffs when the refs are less likely to call a foul.

Bottom line is that in the majority of gamewinning plays in the playoffs, it's about having the players who are able to make the plays and win games. In the case of guys like Rose and Crawford, it was just having clutch guys making clutch plays, not some magical thing the coach drew up.

I still don't understand why people think he would like to go to the Lakers, in 2012 all those guys are going to be really old, if I was him I would go to Chicago, or even here if we get another piece, I know that I'm dreaming but I remember that when Tmac was a free agent, Indiana was one of his choices.

You have to get something positive for him, you just have to. You cannot let him walk away for an exception.

You have to follow the Denver and Utah route, and you know the guy is not going to resign, and so you try and get assets.

There's no way I trade him to the Lakers though. Kobe, Howard and Gasol is not fair. Howard is young as well, so you're even given them another superstar for we Kobe is done.

If the Magic are forced to move him, they have to try and move Arenas or Turk with him.

I would love to get Howard, but he would not want to come here. Plus those type of deals usually strip a team bare of young talent

Yes, even when the series moves back to Atlanta, where the Hawks have turned into hummingbirds more than once this season. There's a reason the Hawks this season have been blown out at home more than any team with a winning record in NBA history. There is a reason they have suffered five home losses by 20 or more points, including three by more than 30 points. There's a reason those numbers are both NBA records for futility for a team with a winning record.
