CHA down 10 with 1:30 to go. We just sodomized Washington.

We've clinched it. It's been five long years. Last year I was wondering if this team was ever going to be okay again. We are, I think, 18-17 under Vogel and our rebuilding has just started.

The young guys have done it. Roy Hibbert, Danny Granger, PAUL GEORGE, Tyler Hansbrough. Not the vets, not JOB.

Let's be homer fans and celebrate!

Do you all remember when Roy was a rookie and he couldn't get up and down the court and would foul out in fifteen minutes? Now he's playing around 30 minutes a game and he is our number two option. He's even developing a mid range jumpshot just like Rik Smits.

Do you all remember when Brandon Rush couldn't get playing time over Stephen Graham? He's turned into our glue guy off of the bench and he's learned how to apply himself even if he's not hitting shots.

Do you guys remember when we wondered whether or not Tyler was ever going to play again? He is not just playing now, he is starting and putting up some monster numbers for a second year player.

What about when we wondered if Josh was an NBA player? He's been our starter for most of the season and he has the best vision out of anyone on this team.

Or when we were looking for a point guard and we thought that maybe TJ was that guy? We stole Darren Collison and he was a man on a mission tonight with 15 and 11 on 70% shooting.

What about when we all collectively assumed that Paul George wasn't going to be ready for 2-3 years? 23, 6, 4, and 2. This kid is the definition of a stat sheet stuffer- In a good way.

And Mike. Mike has always been known by a select few as such a loser. It's been his poor situation throughout his whole career. He was with a very bad Golden State franchise then he got traded to us which at that point was not much better at all. Now he's made it too.

These are the guys stepping up. They are growing, and they will continue to grow. That is the most satisfying thing about this whole fiasco. These are the guys that got us here. OUR guys. OUR kids.

That is why I love this Pacers team.

Go Pacers and turn some heads in the Playoffs!

Looking back at what we've come from really makes me a proud fan.

Sure fans have come and gone with this team and now they are coming back.

From being just a bunch of thugs who ran around Indy shooting guns and Bird having to change the identity of the team from a jail cell to a group of mature, young men who resemble the willingness to improve and win makes this long 5 year wait well worth it.

I tip my hat off to the Simons, Bird, Morway, Vogel, and the players.

Making the playoffs was something everyone affiliated with this organization from players, to fans, to the state of Indiana, it gives the Pacers a positive image.

I'm looking to fly into Indy and get tickets before they probably sellout.

A nice rivalry renewed between us and the Bulls. Hopefully we make it a competitive series.

THIS is one of the most under-appreciated reasons for a team to make the playoffs - even as a low seed - rather than tank to improve draft seeding 3 or 4 picks. I will never forget going to Game 3 of the 1987 Playoffs - my first post-season experience as a young fan. It was a big reason I continued to be a fan through a couple more really rough seasons. That may be true, but its still the number one seed and it has the MVP. I'd be shocked if that's the team they chose.

Some info from Wikipedia on playoff schedule, and TV coverage:

Postseason

The 2011 NBA Playoffs will begin on Saturday April 16, and will conclude on Monday May 30 (latest possible date for the Eastern Conference Finals). The NBA Finals will begin no later than Thursday June 2, and end no later than Thursday June 16 (unless both conference finals end in either four or five games, which would push the Finals start date to Tuesday May 31). ESPN will begin their playoff broadcast on April 16, and will continue every Friday and Saturday thereafter, with the Sunday-Thursday schedule reserved for TNT and NBA TV. ABC will continue broadcasting early-round playoff coverage every Sunday afternoon, with select Saturday afternoon broadcasts. The first round playoff coverage will be non-exclusive except for ABC-covered games, in which local sports networks (e.g. Fox Sports Net, Comcast SportsNet) may still air the game in their home market. TNT will air the Eastern Conference Finals while ESPN will air the Western Conference Finals. The NBA Finals will be shown on ABC. Nationwide radio coverage will be on ESPN Radio for select playoff games, the entire Conference Finals and NBA Finals.

That may be true, but its still the number one seed and it has the MVP. I'd be shocked if that's the team they chose.

I didn't know Celtics had such good ratings. So, in all likelihood, it'll be Orlando/Atlanta.

Yes it will be Magic and Hawks, but if they had to choose between the Buls series and the Celtics series, NBATV would get the Bulls

Yes. Every games except the ABC games are on local TV until the conference finals

But there is no NBA Lesgue pass so for those who cannot get FS-Indiana (those who live elsewhere), if the pacers are on NBATV, you might be out of luck, unless you have NBA TV

The Pacers are over .500 since hiring Frank. And, imo, they are a very different team.

This, exactly. Someone on another site said how the east always has one team that doesn't deserve to be in it, but look what we have done under Frank. Thats definitely a team that deserves to make it.

with an incredibly easy schedule... as i said, it's my opinion. getting overly excited about a below average team will only result in complacency and persistent mediocrity. i expect a competitive team. the pacers greatly underachieved this year and making the playoffs 7 games below .500 will not change my thoughts on that.

They are a young team. Time will tell if they are below average. And this team has beaten some really good teams, and lost to some really bad teams. Still doesn't change the fact that they are a different team under Vogel, and under Vogel they are over .500.

I think the first game will be a blowout, btw.

But I also can't wait to see the fight in these guys after the initial shock. My impression of the young guys is that they have a lot of heart. And I enjoy watching that over superstars. And to me, watching the younger guys get a taste of the playoffs is plenty to get excited about.

Vogel looked like a kid in a candy store during the post game presser. Best bit was I swear you could hear the players cheering in the background.

In terms of strength of schedule, I believe the statistics showed that..yes, O'brien's schedule was tougher. But there wasn't a significant difference in winning percentage between above .500 teams and below .500 teams where as there was with O'brien.

The Pacers played exactly as should be expected playing .500 since Vogel took over. They didn't overachieve, but they didn't underachieve either. You can't just blame their .500 record with Vogel on their schedule.

Winning games should never be an indictment against a coach. If JOB finished with the same results a couple folks around here would be justifying the extension he got. Vogel's job was to right the ship and he did. He won more games than he lost and this team is playoff bound. Is it his fault what the schedule was? No. If he would have stunk it up a couple folks around here would be saying that canning Jimmy was a mistake (if thats even possible).

it's about having standards and never lowering those standards. because once you start lowering those standards you set yourself up for mediocrity...

tom crean is such a **** x's and o's coach i don't think you'll ever have to worry about iu winning any tournament having a 13-16 record. iu's going to have to win in spite of crean so long as he's there. and with the talent iu will have next year, there is no excuse for them to not make the ncaa.

Or it's about being able to be excited about different aspects of watching a team play.

Watching young guys grow up, learn to play together, get some experience, and become better players can be just as much fun as watching an elite team. It really can. (You may not realize it at the time..but looking back..)

And even more fun once they do become good. (Much more so than just buying a bunch of good players) And going to the playoffs is another step in development.

So the point is to enjoy watching these guys grow up and learn and experience playoff basketball.

They aren't winning a championship. So what. Maybe they can make things really tough on Chicago..and we can get some thrills out of that.

The thing about standards is that you must set them first before you can uphold them. You must set goals and in order to achieve them. So if we dont make the playoffs next year then you have an argument but with this statement you have silenced yourself.

Look at the word in caps in the title of this thread. It's CELEBRATE. Use this thread to CELEBRATE being in the playoffs for this first time in 5 years. CELEBRATE the fact that we played the young guys and have been a much better team under Vogel. CELEBRATE that they are already 4 games better than last year with three games left.

No one here is gonna be happy being under .500 and getting the 8 seed each season. But you need to take small steps forward before you are a championship team. This is actually a big step for our guys to make the playoffs. So please just enjoy it. No need to say we don't deserve it.

A little off topic. I agree about Crean. If he doesn't do something next year he should be fired. I have not liked Crean ever since he basically kicked every one of Sampson's players off the team before they really had a chance to prove themselves. If they hadn't changed by the time the fall semester came about I would understand, but most of them he kicked off as soon as he could find a reason. I understand Sampson didn't always recruit the best people, but I would rather Crean had tried and set them straight then just kick them into the ditch.

To cap off a roller coaster year that included a mid season coaching change, loads of consistency issues, and chemistry problems with some of our key players, we rode one of the youngest lineups, coached by the youngest coach, to the playoffs to end a five year drought. Stop being Mr. Contrary and just enjoy the damn moment.

An incredible feeling in our area of the lower level at Conseco tonight, with folks sensing the win even before 5 minutes of the game had been played. And very nice move by the Pacers to broadcast the overtime period between the Bobcats and Magic. We found out from an usher just a minute before the Pacers game ended. I would bet more folks would have hung around if they knew the Bobcats game would be on the jumbotron, but I think it was a spur of the moment decision, and one that was appreciated by many.

Also tonight....a moment that justifies inclusion in a future "Season's Funniest Moments at Conseco" thread. But just not appropriate to jot it down here!

Some folks knew this was coming, but I hope people will also give some love to Jeff Foster. So many folks were ready to toss the guy on the scrap heap. Look at some threads from pre-season or the first third of the season, and many were saying that he was washed up, would keep getting injured, and that his roster spot deserved to go to someone else. Well, we knew Jeff suddenly wasn't going to become the first, second or third scoring option, but on a per-minute basis, he is putting up career or near-career highs for rebounds and ORBs this season, and his scoring has not decreased. The guy ranks 5th in rebounds per 48 minutes for the entire NBA, and he and Tyler were arguably the straws that stirred the soup for the Goon Squad.

Just like I feel good for Dunleavy, I am also very happy for Jeff that he was finally able to get back to the playoffs.

Danny and Roy are vets. There is no reason to crap on dulneavy and foster either. You ruin the celebration intention with bs.

Roy is in no way a vet at all. 3 year player, and just 24 years old and additionally playing the position that takes the longest to master.

He's a kid.

Danny is a "vet" but he isn't old either.

What other playoff teams start or have nearly as many rotation players as young as the pacers? Not more than 2 or 3.

Do yourself a favor and don't watch/attend any Pacers Post Season Games until you become completely satisfied with the teams Regular Season record.

why? because i have an opinion? 2 years ago the pacers won 36 games and i don't recall any celebratory posts. i've stated i'm excited for the series, but i refuse to celebrate a losing record, even if losing got us to the postseason. once again, to those arguing 19-16 under vogel, 15 of the 19 wins were against sub .500 teams. a wins a win, but let's not act like we were beating good teams consistently.

Your point would be far more salient if we had never fired o'brien, and were limping into the playoffs on the backs of mike dunleavey and troy murphy.

However, we've played above .500 for an extended period of time, beat some tough teams during that stretch, and played some others quite close, and have a starting lineup among the youngest in the entire league. History suggests our young players will only continue to get better, and we have massive capspace.

We're in a good position going forward, if you can't celebrate the first playoffs in ages as a pacers fan, in addition to a bright future then you must not have much fun with the team at all.

A completely reasonable celebration thread isn't the place to air those opinions. Of course we're going to be a bit homerish in threads such as this, it's excitign for most people!!

You should make another thread imo, you have every right to that opinion it just comes off as sour grapes/ trying to ruin the fun of others in this thread, which is blatantly meant to be over the top in support of the teams accomplishment.

His point still doesn't make sense...we shouldn't be happy because we made the playoffs? Give me a ****ing break. Do the NBA rules state we get to play? Yes? Well then the fact that we are under .500 doesn't really matter. We're not in here saying thank God we finished under. 500. We're in here saying we thank God we made the playoffs and we are seeing some progress.

He's calling us homers for that. That would make no sense under any circumstances.

Oh, I agree with you. It's not just the record, it's who we've played to earn the record, the position we are in after this year, the coach that makes common sense seem like common sense.

Everyone said the Seattle Seahawks didn't belong in the playoffs. Yet they spanked the defending champion Saints. I'm not saying we are going to beat the Bulls, I will be happy with one win against them. But saying we don't deserve to be in the playoffs and we shouldn't be happy just because we are under .500 is pretty short sighted seeing where this team has come from just a few months ago.

Which means 8th place is pretty fitting for this team. We are clearly better than the bottom teams, but struggle against the better ones. I mean outside of Boston, Chicago and Miami what is the point of any other team in the playoffs. None of them really have a chance at winning the East.

Your opinion is your own. You act as if this is the first sub .500 team in history to make it in. The Knicks and 76ers could still finish sub .500. I guess they don't deserve it either.

2 years ago we weren't a Playoff team so who would celebrate? Oh, and if good teams could be beaten consistently then they wouldn't be considered good teams. Bottom line is we have three tune up games left before it gets real.

Standards are adjusted as a team progresses through it's development cycle. Right now, what mattered most was getting back in.

Now that that standard has been met, we are about to officially take the next step, which means next year's standards will be raised.

This is acceptable, for this year.

It won't be acceptable if it is duplicated next year. Next year, the goal becomes the second round, which basically means no worse than the 5th seed.

kester99
04-07-2011, 12:55 AM
We played every team from the West twice (just like all the East teams did).

We played all the teams in the East 4 times, except for 4 teams which we will have played 3 times....just like every other team in the East. (The four we play 3 times are 2 playoff teams, and 2 non-playoff teams.)

At the end of that process, we have the 8th best record in the East, and that spells playoffs.

Played by the rules; earned the spot. Saying we don't deserve it? Phooey.

You really can't please everybody, can you?

The Pacers are in the playoffs, regardless of the record. It's not their fault that despite their sub-.500 record they are still the 8th team on the East. The Atlanta Hawks from several seasons ago were just a sub-.500 team when they reached the playoffs, and look at them right now. A staple at the playoffs on the East for the last few seasons.

This success needs to be celebrated because this is the step we needed in order to go to the next phase...giving the young guys the taste of the playoffs and motivate them to get better the next offseason. With the available cap space and being a playoff team this season, maybe it's a good start to attract quality FAs.

I didn't read any of the discussion. I just want to say we've been through five years of this and WE FINALLY DID IT!

That can't be repeated enough. It was a great blowout and great way to do it, too. I don't care who the team was... who did we play again?

Besides that, I obviously want us to do as well as we can in the playoffs like everyone else, but just the fact we made it is enough for me. This is the start of a rebuilding team getting good, and getting fans back in the Fieldhouse, and that's all that matters to me (besides #PacersPlayoffs). I welcome all bandwagon fans with open arms and their open wallets.

I literally just read this entire thread with the pacers.com site up and the intense music playing. It's looped many times by now. It was worth it despite the guy trying to **** in all of our Cheerios.

What a night! Big big ups to PS&E for being prepared to show us the OT of the Charlotte game then sell us some tickets. They even had fliers printed out on the way out already advertising it, something I'll probably hang onto forever. I will likely remember this night forever, and for fans that really didn't come around until the mid 90's or later like myself, these days may be equal to what the more experienced fans saw in the late 80's/early 90's as our young team started to build some intensity by making the playoffs and even though we lost against teams like the veteran Celtics, it was our starting place for a very long run. That's what I'd like to believe this is.

I cannot overstate how gratifying this is, even with the record.

It feels like all the energy I've put into following this team is finally paying off. I'm happy for Larry, David and the owners. I'm happy for Jeff, who has sacrificed a lot in the past few years to no success. I'm happy for Mike, who finally gets to play in the playoffs. I'm happy for the rest of the players, and even the broadcasters that have never called a Pacers playoff game.

I'm very close to taking some time off work and flying back for a game or two. I hope we play loose and get hot.

Jordan's Bulls once got in at 30-52. When you make the playoffs, everybody is 0-0. First one to 16 wins.

It's the playoffs. You made it in, so deal with it.

For the record, I think they match up horribly with chicago, but the bottom line is they have a chance by virtue of being in.

I do wonder what happened to all those who argued for three years that just making the playoffs only to lose in the first round was a waste of time and that they would rather the pacers would tank to get a better draft pick.

I don't know how anyone isn't excited about this. Did we back our way in? Yeah, sure. Do I care? Not at all.

I can't wait. Even if it's only 4 games, it's going to be a hell of a lot of fun.

I don't see this as backing our way in. We controlled our own destiny for the most part and did what we had to do. Would we have made it if the Bucks or Bobcats had done better themselves? No, but that is more of a matter of taking advantage of the situation.

To me, "backing in" would be if we were in 9th and playing fairly mediocre and the 8th place team imploded to drop past us.

This is a vital first step to returning to relevance. We may be on this step for a while (how many years did we spend one-and-done in the playoffs before '94?), so we should savor the moment and strive to remember it when we are complaining about being stuck as a first-round team.

Getting in, then improving the regular season record so we have better matchups in the playoffs, then working our way up - that's the path, and we've put our feet upon it.

Thank God Fred Glass has much more sense than you.

Crean inherited a roster of potheads with NINETEEN Fs. This past season IU had the second most academic all conference players in the Big 10.

He did the right thing and I appreciate him for doing that.

And Crawford left on his own, Crean wanted him to stay.

Crean has done the best with the crappy situation he inherited. He did not suddenly become a bad coach when he came to IU. His Marquette teams were well coached and highly competitive.
