Do you want to take a look at him this summer. He is a unrestricted, but the Kings just traded for him, so they probably will want to resign him. How much would be too much for him? Look at his last month.

I've been down with this idea and after the Wiz traded him for next to nothing I thought it was a boneheaded move. He certainly has youth and ability on his side and tons of potential.

I could see him wanting to stay with the Kings/Royals as they plan on moving to the Anaheim area. Not a bad location at all. I guess it depends on what the Pacers are offering.

22.4 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 3.3 apg with the Kings. He's less than 6'4" in shoes, though.

So he's more of a combo guard. I dont mind that, because we could play him at the 1 and the 2, so he's flexible. I would love to have him.

I thought he was just a jump shooter, but he has some nice drives to the basket thrown in there.

If we have the chance, we should go for him. He has been putting pretty good numbers this season and he's young, which means he'll probably improve further.
Problem is, he's 6"3 or 6"4 which is a slightly undersized for a shooting guard

Does he play defense? I'm not sure but I'm curious because he can obviously score the ball.

Really?
04-01-2011, 06:59 PM
Sure why not, he would be a good bench player... not sure that there would be enough shots available for him as a starter though, in each of those games it seems like he took atleast 20 shots.

So he's more of a combo guard. I dont mind that, because we could play him at the 1 and the 2, so he's flexible. I would love to have him.

He's not a combo guard. He can't play PG.

The problem with him is that he need the minutes to put up big numbers. When he plays less than 30 minutes his numbers drop significantly. When he came offo fthe bench this year for New Orleans he was much of a factor. The trade to New Orleans made him millions on his next contract.

Does he play defense?

Well, new coach Monty Williams didn't think so, and Thornton didn't play much b/c of it.

Thornton is a great slasher to the basket which is something the Pacers could use, but if he can't or won't play "D" he's not much more than a rotational player coming off the bench. If he could be had cheaply enough, I'd rather have him than Stephenson.

Here is what Hollinger had in his scouting report for Thornton:

+ Determined scorer who likes to attack rim and has good feel around basket.

+ Average athlete with middling line-drive jumper but never turns ball over.

+ OK defender thanks to intensity and solid build, but gives up inches and speed.

Thornton is the most controlled reckless player I've ever seen. He's constantly looking to attack, but he never loses the handle. And I mean never. Thornton had miscues on only 6.1 percent of the possessions he used, the lowest rate among shooting guards and nearly the lowest in the entire league.

Usually players with low turnover ratios are catch-and-shoot types. Thornton had the "shoot" part down, but he took 40 percent of his shots at the rim. Last season's ridiculously low turnover rate is probably something of a fluke, but even if Thornton's true rate is more like 8 or 9 percent of possessions, that's still very impressive for a shot-happy rookie guard.

Of course, one reason Thornton didn't turn the ball over was because he never passed it. Only three guards owned a lower assist ratio; if he's going to the basket this often, he should be getting a few assists just by sheer luck.

Long term, his best role is probably as a sixth-man scorer; he's a decent outside shooter (37.1 percent on 3s), but his biggest contribution is creating middling-percentage shots without turnovers. Such players are usually of more value on a second unit, where they serve to prevent less talented teammates from having to create offense. As a starter, he takes those same shots away from Chris Paul and David West.

Also wanted to point out that the Kings are even more under the cap than we are. We won't be able to outbid them if they want to keep him.

Also, the Kings seem to consider Thornton a starter (paired with another combo type in Evans). With us, he projects more as a sixth man - wouldn't want to start a tiny backcourt of Thornton and Collison.

Since he was traded to the Kings, in those 20 games he has averaged 17 shots per game. That pretty much says he doesn't like to give up and share the ball. The word blackhole comes to mind with a player who Monty Williams felt wouldn't/couldn't play "D". A one dimensional player who doesn't have "D" isn't not what the Pacers need in a starter with a backcourt of him and Collison. A cheaper smaller version of Kevin Martin isn't anything I'm interested in for the Pacers as a starter. Pass.

They produced well together in New Orleans.

we're talking about a guy who's 23 and only in his second season in the NBA. I think he had a very good rookie year, but this year did not get an opportunity until he got traded to Sacramento. He's been averaging 21.8 ppg, 46.3 FG%, 40.4 3pFG since. Kinda reminds me of Granger in his MIP year, except he gets to the foul line much less (that's why Danny had higher PPG).

It's more than likely this guy will keep improving, as some of you guys mentioned he should have pretty decent chemistry with DC as well. I'd take him over Mayo. And he's an unrestricted free agent, which means we have a shot of getting him.
Only drawbacks are, we're probably going to overpay him to get here, he's not much of a defender (or not yet), and he's undersized.
But I'd take that risk, because 1) We don't have consistent scoring out of our SG spot and 2) I believe he could develop into an all star or even more

Does he play defense? I'm not sure but I'm curious because he can obviously score the ball.
One of the reasons why Thornton was a really hot rookie prospect last season in NOLA but couldn't get off the bench under Monty Williams this season was because of his defense. Either his defense is really bad...or he's not capable of learning how to properly defend.
