Okay.. So I've never followed baseball. I want to be a Red's fan but I don't understand baseball that much. Can anyone open me up and tell me about this roster, how the league goes, etc.. I know it's a hassle but I just don't know how to get started.

Aw, stop whining. It's not just me that gives you **** for it. It's pretty much the rest of Area 55. You wear a Chicago jacket or hat to a Bulls game, you know you're going to catch some light-hearted jabs for it.

I expect big things out of Bruce this year and a nice leap from Stubbs as well. I'm excited for Reds baseball. We aren't sneaking up on anybody this year, so it will be interesting to see how we react with a target on our backs. I won't attend a baseball game until it's warm though. Can't sit outside that long and freeze my butt off.

Yeah sitting through games when it's cold is not fun at all. The only game I got to go to last season was in early October and it was cold and rainy the whole game. Luckily Bruce cranked 2 homers so I was able to have some sort of happiness that day.

The Kotsay catch was a bad call. The play at 3rd was not. You have 3 feet of space on either side of the path that you start on. Phillips wasn't 3 feet away from his original path. The umpire made the correct call on that play. The Kotsay play was just a terrible call from the 1st base umpire.

Volquez is fine, still 161 games left. Keep in mind Cincy is not a pitchers' park. Pitchers will give up homeruns @ Great American Ball Park.

Janish is just a tad better than Adam Rosales. Don't expect too much out him offensively. Gomes had another error in the outfield.

It will be interesting to see what happens at the deadline. Cincy has a young core group of pitchers (Leake, Wood, etc) do they keep them or make a deal for a difference maker? I don't know if they do. King Felix may sign for 30 million a year elsewhere.

Okay.. So I've never followed baseball. I want to be a Red's fan but I don't understand baseball that much. Can anyone open me up and tell me about this roster, how the league goes, etc.. I know it's a hassle but I just don't know how to get started.

Ok so your head is in the right place. Indiana sports fans, if they want to follow MLB are morally obligated to follow the Reds. Prior connections, similar atmosphere as Indy, etc.

The only time when it would be ok to root for a different team is if you live in Northwest Indiana it would certainly be ok if you were a Sox fan.

You will find that all true Indiana fans that follow baseball are Reds fans. Almost everyone of them. In other words, they didn't just decide to jump on a specific bandwagon for douchey reasons.

It is worth noting that the Reds consider Indianapolis baseball fans a part of their fanbase- The connection is there, so root accordingly if you want to watch baseball.

Also, just to be clear for future reference, people from Indiana that:

are Cubs fans, are giant d-bags.

While the Reds do consider Indy part of their fan base, I've seen bars downtown that support the Cubs, and I would have to say more people in Indy root for the Cubs than we think, as they used to root for the Bears before the Colts arrived.

If I had to guess Indy is probably split between Cubs/Reds.

That's because the menatility is that if you put on a Cubs shirt or hat, you instantly become someone who "roots for the underdog" and has been with the team for a "long time", which in normal circumstances is not true.

I believe the worst thing about a Cubs fan is that when you try to talk trash, they start saying things about the Reds, in which how long their playoff drought was, etc. To them, 1908 seems like 3 years ago or something.

I dont know that Janish should be considered a stop gap solution. He has busted his rear end, and many people in the orginization think very highly of him. Only time will tell, but I definitely would not hold that opinion on him at this point. His defense is off the charts.

As for this team going not going very far without a better #1...it is way too early to make that call. Not only that, but you have Cueto and Bailey close to coming back. If there is a pitching problem to be concerned with in the long term it is the closing role. Cordero has been fairly inconsistent.

Homer Bailey will be back Thursday. Cueto soon after that. The starting pitching has struggled. Hopefully they solve the problem. There is no reason to not be winning the division by @ least 3 games right now.

They have lost too many series recently Pitt, Arizona, & now Florida. I know Rolen is out and Bruce was slumping in past weeks but they have to take advantage of the Cardinals slumping and not give that veteran team hope.

Edison needs a quality start against the Cubs. Reds must get 2 of 3. Lance Berkman's HR in the 8th got the Cards a W yesterday. The Red's should have just signed him because he has been a Reds Killer his whole career.

This team needs help. We have good pieces to continue on in the future (Phillips, Votto, Bruce, Stubbs, Bailey, Chapman, etc), but it was obvious we had glaring weaknesses last year in the playoffs. I still don't understand why more moves weren't made to shore up problems at LF, SS, and the starting rotation. I think we're going to continue to see inconsistent outings until some of these problems are resolved. In the meantime, we'll need to be clicking on all cylinders to stay near/at the top of the NL Central.

I am not in panic mode. Rolen is getting back from injury. Bruce is on fire. They lost to two quality teams [clev/philly] Keep in mind Reds win that 19 inning game they break even vs Philly. A HS kid who goes in the first round, isn't going to college. He's gonna get a cool mil just in a signing bonus.

There was a kid drafted 26th(I think) by Tampa Bay from Muncie last year, right out of HS, and his signing bonus was around that number. Way too much money to turn down to go to college.

No not all of the kids think that way I watched the whole draft the #15 prospect told teams not to draft him because he wants college. He got drafted in the 2nd round. But if he doesn't sign you get the same pick in the next draft so you can take that gamble. The Cubs took a couple risk guys like that. In the 14th round we got a 1st round talent too bad he wont sign.

However there are other kids like my friend from Lutheran who I played travel ball with in middle school. He got drafted in the 46th round last year and he was signing no matter what. It all depends on the Kid I hope all the Kids sign from the Cubs we got some good player a lot of HS guys.

But even if your 1st round pick doesn't sign you get the exact same pick next year so there is very little risk for the Reds taking that pitcher.

Rolen is a great Vet to have but he's really old now and is gonna retire anytime so it wouldn't be bad at all to trade him for someone. We REALLY need a good SS. The games i have watched Janish has been terrible. Maybe make a trade or two and look at calling up some of the prospects.

Just checked the newest standings. It's actually not as bad as it feels. It feels like we are 6 GB.. But were only 2.5 GB. That isn't much of a big deal. It was later in the season last year when we made our big break and passed the Cards after the fight. I think and hope we will progress and start winning more games.

EDIT: The batting hasn't been great but really the thing that HAS to improve is the pitching. Our best ERA guy right now is Leake with a 3.89 Then our second best is Arroyo with a 5.1 and it gets worse from there. That's terrible pitching. Makes it a lot harder on the offense to feel the pressure to perform every night.

In 3 weeks I will be in panic mode and wanting a fire sale. No Bats again. Interleague Play has been a curse this season.

Cordero to the Braves makes a lot of sense. I think they have the most talent to pick from.

Hernadez to Pirates also makes sense. The Reds have a young catcher they can move up or give Hanigan everyday duties.

The pitching has been respectable. It is the lack of offense ie inconsistency. I cant believe the Reds are top in the NL in runs scored and put together back to back games of 0/2/0/1 in a four game span. I am MIFFED, Fire Hitting Coach, easy move but HIT the Ball.

You guys could use a pitcher or two. Dempester or Z seem like good fits. But i bet the bum Henry tries to save his job and doesn't sell. I hate that guy with a passion. Billy Beane please! Honestly think what Beane could do with 140 million dollar pay roll.

I would put 20 dollars that the Pirates will not be buyers at the deadline i mean they are the Clipper of baseball it just isn't gonna happen IMO they don't care about winning. I bet they will use thaat extra money and sign some international free agents. The Cubs spent almost 3m dollars on two 16 year olds. Last time we did this we ended up getting Starlin Castro at age 16. I just see the Pirates more willing to spend for the future than spending money and a prospect on a older catcher. Again just my opinion. But again I didn't see them signing Kevin Correria for nearly 8m dollars they could of used that 8m on the draft and players they could keep for 6 yrs before becoming free agents.

Correria is an 11 game winner. The Pirates are 4 games over .500. They have sold out the last two games. This could be their first winning season since 1992. They have to make a move if they are still in contention in 3 weeks. They did invest money in Snyder [veteran catcher w/ bat] but he has a back injury. Doumit is also often injured. It makes sense like them to invest in a veteran short term catcher and Ramon Hernadez is just that.

Look up the Reds in 2006 w/ the Felipe Lopez trade.

Lack of focus, bad pitches, bad decisions, I don't care. What he does CONSISTENTLY is give up runs in bunches and put the team consistently in a position to have to try to come from behind. He hasn't been the same pitcher since his Tommy John surgery/PED suspension.

I'd be kind of sad to see Ramon go. He's grown on me quite a bit since we got him. It COULD end up being a good thing because Hanigan could become the regular starting C and Mesocaro is going to be a stud by most accounts. Just wouldn't want to throw Mesocaro into the fire before he's ready. Plus Ramon has a great bond with our Dominican pitchers.

Will the Reds ever sniff a winning streak this year?

Managed to do nothing with the momentum from the Atlanta series, which is significant when you can't even win back to back games for a month or more. So I say no.

I'm starting to think this might be the Dusty Baker factor. I was not confident in extending him, although you really have little choice after the division title last year. Seems like everywhere he goes, there's a solid initial bump followed by a major drop off.

Team just looks like it has no collective sense of purpose. Very few quality at bats when I watch. Kind of like they think at some point they'll just automatically turn it on, if they even think that.

Arroyo needs to follow Volquez to Louisville. He has been pitching terrible this season. In fact in the month of July his ERA is 8.00.

I read Jayson Stark calling Cincy losers for not making any moves. I dont consider the Reds losers. There was no huge name worth giving up quliaty talent or prospects for. Cleveland gave up a lot for Jimenez. Mets pretty much paid for Beltran to leave. Lets see how Cozart /Heisey/Chapman/Frazier/Alonzo play when they get more bats. Give the young guys a chance to be in a pennant race and play some meaningful games. This will lead to better evaluation of these players and then the organization knows what it has talent wise. I really believe Rolen would have been moved if healthy. Shame his shoulder didnt hold up this season.

We really needed to make a move. Alonso especially is ripe to move. Votto blocks his path to the majors and he is ready for the big leagues now. Obviously I wasn't privy to these conversations, but we have the assets and I am a little upset we didn't do anything. The Reds have several quality pro ready players in their system. The problem is these guys are not all star worthy prospects. Yes, they may be everyday quality players in the show. ie Jeff Keppinger but nothing to net an impact player.

The problem is not the pitching (IMO) The problem is the lack of moving runners in scoring position and scoring runs. What impact bats were available Beltran/Pence.

Pirates were considered buyers and all they picked up were Ryan Ludwick & Derreck Lee. I would rather have Alonzo then trade him for either of those players for a short term fix. Ludwick is not going to beat the Phils.

I read the cincy papers, follow 700 WLW, & The team is not in panic mode. They think they can still win the division as assembled. If not, then make moves. Let the Players play it out this season. They are the returning division champions. We did move Gomes to clear the way for Alonzo & Heisey. Cozart down Frazier steps up. Next man In much like the Colts!!!

The Pirates were extremely cautious buyers. They know damn good and well they shouldn't be doing as well as they are right now and that their time to strike is still a year or two away. They weren't going to give up anything good to land a real impact player like Beltran or Pence, so they made the deals for Ludwick and Lee that I'm not sure actually make them any better. It might appease their fanbase in thinking they were buyers, but those two aren't going to have much of an impact imo.

As for the Reds, of course they aren't in panic mode. Why should they be? They are still in the playoff race and their core is still very good. No reason to panic at all. The team is disappointing this year and they still need a frontline, bonafide #1 starter. Cueto has played the role well this year, but the other members of the rotation have underwhelmed. The offense was full of timely hits last year and it seems as if they have run out of a bit of that magic this year. The sweep of the Giants was huge. They absolutely have to win this series in Houston that starts tonight. The Astros are ****ing awful and should be considered a Triple A team at this point. Honestly, we need to sweep them, hope the Brewers/Cardinals beat up on each other, and that Pittsburgh comes back down to earth a little, which they have started to do.

Nick Massett frustrated me so much last night. I wanted Willis to get that W so bad.. Pitched some pretty good innings, then when Dusty left him out there to bat one more time, he hit a HR! He single handedly gave the team the lead as he was being sat down.. Then Massett couldn't do anything right and got 5 guys on base in a row..

Reds are so close to getting things together, looked fine last night, Massett just was a huge weakness when he came in last night.

Massett was traded for Ken Griffey Jr. He has had a roller coaster year. Started out terrible, was the best pitcher in the rotation for a stretch, and now back down. They got him thinking he could be a potential closer. I'll give him another season before I judge him.

Arthur Rhodes got cut in Tx and Also Jared Burton is throwing again. He is scheduled to pitch 2 innings next outing.

It has been a frustrating season. Losing 2 of 3 to a team 40 games under .500 upsets me but I didnt have the hand/eye cordination, speed, power, or throwing arm to play for them Season.

That has to be one of the best World Series ever, and game 6 is without a doubt one of the best games ever. This is something that will haunt the Rangers and their fans forever. They were one strike away two times and couldn't seal it up. Unbelievable. Nelson Cruz should have made that catch in the 9th. A veteran big-leaguer just has to make that play. He seemed like he was afraid of the wall. I think most high school players could have caught that ball.

I was completely indifferent to who won this series. On one hand, Texas has never won a WS before and they have a likable manager with a lot of likable players. On the other, St. Louis is a classic organization with a great manager and likable vets. So I would have been happy for either team.

St. Louis continues to build on that franchise's legendary history. 11 titles with 2 in the last 6 years. Hopefully Pujols stays there. It would be a shame if he didn't play his entire career in St. Louis.

Baseball can get so boring in the middle of the summer when it drags on and on and on. But it's a very exciting sport to watch in a close World Series like this when every swing and pitch matters. This series was a lot of fun.

Mine was within 24 hrs of your post and when i happened to check the thread. so convienant on accident. :)

Without Tony and with the possibility of Albert leaving i don't think its looking too good for next year at the time being... The Reds have a lot of young talent coming up.. The only thing the Reds are short from the cardnals is big pitching.. We really only have one stud that can take on just about anybody.. The rest are day to day whether they are good or not.
