CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Toronto Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan vows he's finished competing in the NBA's slam dunk contest unless the myriad props that dominated Saturday's event are eliminated.

http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/3978.jpg “DeRozan I'm a dunker. Dunk contests, you go out there and dunk. I'm not into all the props and everything.
” -- DeMar DeRozan

Asked Tuesday if he believes he was robbed when he didn't reach the final of the competition, DeRozan replied, "I think so."

Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers won by leaping over a car to edge Washington's JaVale McGee in the last round.

"I'm a dunker. Dunk contests, you go out there and dunk. I'm not into all the props and everything," DeRozan said at shootaround before Tuesday's game against Charlotte. "I try to come out with a creative dunk and do it and go from there. My fans liked it and you can see the reaction from a lot of people afterward.

"If there's a dunk contest next year I'll do it. But not no prop dunk contest."

http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2011/0221/espn_g_bgriffts5_300.jpg
Griffin won the All-Star dunk contest after leaping over the hood of a car.

A Los Angeles native and former player at Southern California, DeRozan says he was disappointed in how the contest played out in his hometown after spending extra time practicing and preparing creative dunks.

He didn't include props such as the car, a stuffed toy and using an extra basket as other competitors did.

DeRozan believes the extra elements cheapen the contest.

"I think a lot of people probably look at it like that. It seems that way when you watch it," he said. "This year I put thought into it. I practiced, had dunks ready and everything. It is what it is. I did it two years in a row. I'm good."

Asked if he would reconsider, DeRozan said he would only compete again if the All-Star Game is held in Toronto or if the rules are changed to eliminate props.

"There's no telling what might happen next year," DeRozan said. "Somebody might use a trampoline."

Can't say that I disagree with him. I think Javale McGee's dunk on 2 goals was legit because it involved.... basketball goals, but Griffin's dunk over the car was corny, as well as not all that impressive. There isn't a person that was in the dunk contest that couldn't have easily done that exact same dunk.

It was soooo obvious the contest was rigged. It's a shame, as this used to be a great competition and I would have loved to have seen what DeRozan had planned for the finals. Unfortunately this contest was the highest viewed dunk contest of all time, which means nothing is going to change and it will probably get more out of control. Time to get rid of Stern and his large market/corporate thinking. A Kia? Really?

the dunk contest had by a mile the wrong winner and the car was just a hig profle sponsor idea, none of Blake's dunks were that great to be honest, nothing new or spectacular.
the 2 baskets, and the 3 balls ones were legit imo

The best dunk Blake did all night was one he missed.

Well it is rigged when you let the fans vote in the final. Blake's elbow in the rim dunk was his best in my opinion. Maybe he deserved to be in the final dunk-off, maybe not.

But when the fans get to vote, there is no way he loses. That is the first thing they should fix, only let the fans vote count as a certain (small) amount.

Blake Griffin could have done layups and still gotten to the finals to jump over that stupid car.

Allowing them 2minutes to try the dunks are stupid, especially when they stop the freaking clock anyways.

You get 3 attempts, and you're done. You can only get a 10 if you get the dunk down on the first attempt. I don't care if you backflipped from the 3pt line, if you miss your first attempt, the highest you can get is a 9.

To be blunt, the dunk contest ****ing sucks to watch.

I thought his one handed dunk in the second round was the best dunk of the night.

well....there was only three prop uses. Each dunker that wasn't Derozan only used one.

One was completely awesome and it took a lot of skill and athleticism to do.
One ended up bad and didn't matter to Demar's success anyway, and the last also didn't matter to his success either because it was done in the finals.

Did he get robbed yes... does he need to complain about the prop use... nah. It really wasn't that bad imo.

The best dunk of the night was McGee's two-backboard dunk. His three-ball dunk was good as well.

I thought he was the most impressive for the night, but he was pretty stupid when it came down to planning things out. He used up all his thunder in the early rounds.

There were at least 4 dunks in the first round that were better than anything Griffin did all night.

McGee's dunks were awesome but the two basket one lost all its momentum because it took him like 10 tries.

Unclebuck
02-22-2011, 04:03 PM
See I think the dunks should be dunks that could in theory at least be done in a regular game

The two basket dunk did not impress me - OK I get that he has long arms.

No props.

On Blake's first 2 two dunks his attempts were way better. The ones he actually made we modified to make it easier so that he could actually get a dunk in. I remember seeing his very first attempt. I couldn't even describe what I seen on that one, but it looked cool. His first attempt at this second dunk look pretty amazing too. Bounce off the side of the board, and into a 360 ninja spin and then tried to reverse dunk it. If I remember correctly.

This.

There's honestly complaining from the fans going on after that dunk contest? Look at those GIFs posted. This was an amazing dunk contest. Blake could do any dunk Derozan did (in fact the reverse was in his plans until Derozan did it, look at Blake's McDonald's Dunk Contest reel to see that same dunk), but I don't think Derozan can do any dunk Blake can. That's why Blake deserved to be in the Finals. He did three great dunks and his last one would have been incredible if Baron threw the pass better and the windmill was done.

Nothing unjust happened in this contest.

Despite the dunks being absolutely spectacular this year, there's one small issue. It's not a dunk contest. It's a popularity contest.

JaVale should have won first place, and Demar Derozan should have won second place.

I was going to say that if you miss, you lose your turn, but I like this.

1 point penalty for a miss, 2 point penalty for two misses, 3 strikes and you're out.

I think they did at one time have some sort of system where a player only got so many attempts, but that caused problems in trying to determine what an attempt was. So they went to the clock and set a time limit.

I agree that the participants shouldn't be put in a situation where they are afraid to try something new and or daring - just because they need to make the dunk

Maybe it's a bad angle from the GIF...but someone is going to have to explain to me what was special about Javale McGee'd dunk in the final round.

Didn't he just alley-oop the ball to himself?

What's special about that?

Really? He went from the outer part of the left side of the key, under the hoop while not knocking himself out on the backboard and finished with a reverse windmill on the other side of the basket.

I still like the lob to the arm in the rim. He took a VC classic and made it better.

And yeah any of those guys could have jumped a car, but they didn't. I'm pretty sure they all could have done each others dunks (except the two rims, not sure if Derozan could do that just cause the size).

I was very entertained by the whole competition and you know what, I wanted to see Blake in the finals. It's a show now. And Blake put on a great show.

McGee's second dunk in the finals was terrible in comparison to his other 3, while Blake was solid/spectacular in his 4 dunks which gave him the win. Derozan's first dunk while cool has been duplicated about as much as the free-throw line dunk, between the legs dunks are dead until someone does something ridiculous with it again.

Between the legs dunks are totally dead until someone finds a way to whore out a product. Technically, Blake's last dunk was terrible. I think Posey can make that dunk.
