The Indiana Pacers moved closer to completing their training camp roster Tuesday with the signing of Rashad Wright and John Edwards.

Wright, a point guard from the University of Georgia, was the team's second-round draft pick in June. He was the Southeastern Conference's Defensive Player of the Year last season.

Edwards, a 7-foot center who played at Kent State last season, was not drafted. He averaged 13.2 points and 6.7 rebounds, was a first-team All-Mid-American Conference selection and led the MAC in blocked shots.

Neither received a guaranteed contract.

The Pacers have 16 players committed to training camp, 14 of whom are under contract. They plan to add only one or two more to keep the roster smaller than in past years for practical and logistical reasons.

Training camp opens Oct. 5.

"It makes it easier to teach and do the things you want to do," coach Rick Carlisle said.

Also, the World Swimming Championships (Oct. 7-11) will force the Pacers from the arena bowl at Conseco Fieldhouse to their practice court, a much more compact area.

Carlisle compared the practice court to the facility the team used for four years when it trained in Orlando, Fla.

"It's not that big a deal," he said. "It's a luxury to be on the main floor, but this is fine."
