I've been toying with the idea of buying an MP3 player... anybody have some triumphs / major mistakes to tell us about? Anybody have one you love that's not an iPod? I like the iPod a lot, but 20gig is more than I need and it's hard to justify the price tag.

I think some of the Creative ones looked nice. I remember thinking they were a bit on the smallish side as far as storage goes though. Maybe that's changed. I was sort of perusing the market there for a while myself. Maybe someone on here knows what the "killer" mp3 player is.

I think for the Crative ones, the largest memory size is 512 MB.

I believe MagicRat has the iRiver version of an iPod.

I asked the same question several months ago, here's a link to the discussion:

Based primarily on Rat's recommendation, I've also got the 20G iRiver.

After several months of ownership, I still give the iRiver iHP-120  .

I love my ipod. I wouldn't go anywhere without it. I have the 20 gig and it's not big enough. I'm a music collecting addict.

If you want a smaller one, try the mini-ipod. You get about five gigs, and it's a lot smaller. They have some really great colors too. It's also a lot cheaper...

I think the mini ipod is $250, while the 20 GB is $300. For $50, you get 16 GB more.

Personally, I have a 4G 40 GB and I love it.

I'd check out the CNET Editors' Choice selections (http://reviews.cnet.com/4521-6532_7-5021434-1.html?tag=subnav). You can do price checking for many web stores from that site when you find one you like.

The Creative players go up to 60GB. You're thinking of the flash based Creative players.

I have a 30GB Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra. It has the best sound quality of any MP3 player (not an opinion, it's a fact). Plus it's the cheapest of the major HDD players as of now.

Free iPods is so hard to get everyone to sign up correctly, then complete an offer. Sometimes I think it's not worth the effort. I tried doing it all by myself (used 56K since I got a new IP everytime), but they caught on some how. :(
