Pacers will probably want someone who will follow orders for the rest of the season. Vogel probably fits that.

My speculation: Bird told O'Brien to play the young guys in the rotation (no more Posey at the 4, either Josh or Tyler) or he can be shown the door. I think Jim O'Brien refused to do what he was asked and was shown the door.

Wouldn't be the first time a front office and O'Brien disagreed about the direction the team was going.

Unless Mike is a lock, I'd say if Frank can get us playing just better than .500 ball for the remainder of the season (which will probably be good enough to get us into the playoffs), then IMO he's earned a shot at being a permanent coach. Even if he injects some common sense into the job, he still has a mess to clean up, starting with getting the old Hibbert back.

And anithing is possible, without O'Brien, even made the Finals

Even with our recent skid and a tough schedule we're only two games out. O'brien or no O'brien, I think playoffs were always a reasonable expectation.

Aside from the top 4 or so the East is awful.

I think if you really trace JOB's tenure, both record-wise and overall team vibe-wise, you have to conclude that each year has gotten incrementally worse.

Hopefully, Vogel at least embraces the youth movement and more rotational stability and otherwise just instills a more positive vibe generally.

Although there was a HUGE contingent that had placed the vast majority of the blame on JO'B ( not that I blame them ), there was a steadfast minority that maintained that the Team simply isn't talented and that the Team itself shares some of the burden for the losses.

So now that JO'B is gone....does this mean that EVEN if we lose the rest of the games this season that you won't complain ( assuming that the young Players are allowed to play ) about the losses?

I officially pledge this:

I will be okay with losing and will not blame the Coach/FO on any loss....as long as the FO decides to "sink or swim with the young core" for the rest of this season.

There was no immediate confirmation on an interim coach, but multiple sources told Yahoo! Sports that former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Mike Brown – once a Pacers assistant – will be a primary focus of the search to replace O’Brien on a long-term basis.

Brown was Rick Carlisle’s top assistant in Indiana from 2003-05 and sources said he has remained well-regarded by Pacers management.

Utah Jazz assistant coach Ty Corbin is also expected to be a strong candidate, sources said.

Well, I think I'm in the camp you describe. I firmly believe we need more talent on the team to start moving in the direction of anything more than 8th seed aspirant in the East or worse.

While I agree it's not all on JOB, my last post expresses how I feel about him. It just feels over his tenure that things are moving in a negative direction. Also, I've always maintained I was not a big fan of his offensive strategy.

And, despite the lack of talent I perceive, I fully expected JOB not to be back next year after having finished out the season.

I had been watching Foster on the bench the last couple of games and that is consistent with some of his body language I've observed. For a coach that preaches discipline, getting ejected is very undisciplined and a slap in the face to a team that needs all the help it can get. I think JOB knew that the ejcetion would be the last straw, and facilitated his own departure.

Last night was my first night of babysitting my new Granddaughter for an overnight visit and Diamond Dave made me wait till today to watch the Bulls game.

I still haven't seen it yet.

I stayed off of the internet since 7:00p.m. last night so I didn't know the score or any NBA news.

As I was feeding her today at apx. 1p.m. I got a text message from Hicks that just stated "Jim O'Brien was fired!!!!!"

Baby Ellie and Grandpa did a happy dance in the living room.

I figured we had to have lost the game last night, still have it on DVR, so I looked at the score.

While I know we get our butts handed to us I am going to watch this with great joy as I consider this the biggest victory of the year. If this is the game that got O'Brien fired then I want to be sure to see it.

Anyway while I am still watching the baby for a little while longer know Brothers & Sisters of the forum my heart soars with each of you on the wings of eagles.

Obviously when we get a chance later we will talk and we will make sure to make the statement that it is on the players now.

But for now we rejoice.

A 5th grader wouldve known to either keep Josh in or get him back in pretty quick like...instead JOB- who no longer has a JOB- chose to go with Posey for extended minutes which even a non-basketball 5th grader could deduce was a bonehead move. We have quickly been becoming a laughing-stock in the league-all directly attributable to JOBonehead.

Without knowing more about what you're saying it's hard to speculate... but from the outside looking in it's simply hard to justify a reason for him staying that would be more compelling than dropping back and punting him.

Frustration with his lineups and coaching had to be growing with everyone in the organization. So maybe that led to some critiquing after the game and some strong suggestions about playing time and questions about playing time that pizzed someone off enough to lead to a firing.

Whatever the case :woot:

This restores my tenuous faith in his ability to make the right decisions. Just a little later (2 years or so) :( than it should have been but its done now.

Who is Vogel to be in any type position? The Pacers need to look at the future and select a coach who can get them to where they want to be in the future. No need giving Vogel anything, since he hasn't accomplished squat as a NBA coach. Bird and Simon can't afford to make a poor decision on the spur of the moment.

Vogel may be the interim coach, but Larry Bird will have some say on who plays, according to a source.

That's excellent.

Jim's strategy had some success in Boston and he tried to recreate it here. Problem is, he forgot that strategy is dependent on the type of players you have available. He stubbornly ignored the strengths of many of our players, including Josh, all to implement his strategy.

He has now paid for that huge mistake.

I don't feel all that great cheering for someone becoming unemployed, but today is a great day to be a Pacers fan :D

I feel ya ,

but think of it like this. Jim made more in his four years here than most of us will make the rest of our working lives

He'll be alright :)

Bird loves Lances game if he has say on who plays TJ will be in a suit and Lance will dress. Posey might be in a suit also but i doubt that

Wojarnowski states long-term replacement targets as Mike Brown and Tyrone Corbin.

I wouldn't be opposed to Corbin, but if the Pacers are thinking in terms of ast coaches Mike Budenholzer and Brian Shaw should be considered. Unfortunately, they are a day late and a dollar short for Monty Williams.

On TV you could see Obie really getting on DC last night at the beginning of a time out, really looked harsh.

Also, Jeff's reaction to Obie's first Tech was like COME ON, MAN, WE ARE TRYING TO GET BACK IN THIS GAME wtf. Very similar to Mannings reaction to the timeout in the Jets game, caught on TV.

I mean its the body of work, obviously, but those were two things that really stood out to me watching just last night.

JOB managed to upset Roy, AJ, Collison, Josh, and Jeff last night at different times. And quite frankly, I think Danny is always annoyed with him.

At some point, Larry was going to have to pick the players over the coach.

Oooh. Nasty.

"O’Brien’s firing comes after the Pacers lost seven of their past eight games to drop to 10th place in the Eastern Conference. After a strong start to the season, the Pacers have faded in recent weeks and O’Brien’s abrasive and erratic coaching style became a greater issue within the organization. The front office wasn’t happy with how O’Brien had publicly chastised promising young center Roy Hibbert(notes), despite the player’s earnest efforts to improve."

Yesss!

Out here in the Bay Area it's a lot of work to watch Pacers games (League Pass is basically the only option). I saw the Warriors game last week in person (which actually was a pretty good game) but the rest of the road trip was just brutal.

Is it too much to hope that watching the rest of the season might be *fun* again?

A rabidpacersfan sighting!

If Posey continues to play big minutes I question Bird. Only reason could be to up his trade value? Surely Bird has decided after watching Tyler, Paul , Josh, and A.J. the last few games its time to see if they are the future of this team. Hopefully Lance will finally get some run too.

Question is can Bird get the Smon's to eat a few contracts or will D. Jones and Posey continue to tie up 2 roster spots for at least another year and a half? If not traded will T.J. be receptive to a buy out knowing he is now tied to the bench?

Should be interesting to see what the lineup will be now that its been revealed Bird will be telling Vogel who to play.

You have to think Bird was probably well aware of the Chicago announcers questioning O'Brien's moves and finally said its time. Sitting a hot player almost a quarter then having opposing announcers basicly laughing at O'Brien saying he probably forgot about McRoberts must have pissed off Larry.

I don't expect any huge turnaround with the coaching change but I do realisticly hope we see the youth play more and get the time O'Brien said they needed to improve but was very hessitant to give them.

In Vogel's case he is simply the figure head the rest of the season , being a good team player will help him in the long run.

I am glad that the Jim O'Brien era is over. He had to be held accountable. I think the record would have been acceptable if the Pacers were playing to their full potential but they are not.

With that said we must remember that there will probably only be minor changes by the interim coach. Those minor changes could have a big impact but no guarantee. It's hard to fix this all in the middle of the season.

This may or may not change the outcome of this season but I can accept that. I appreciate the accountability being put in place here. It is a step in the right direction.

I've tried to stay out of all the Fire Jim O'Brien type threads but just think now we won't have those anymore! Now we can discuss the future head coach, what the philosophy should be and who would be good fits here. This is very exciting in my mind.

I was all over Jim tearing into Hibbert. Based on this report, I think the Pacers Org. believe Jim's style of motivation had something to do with Roy's need for counseling...hence the firing. Of course, this is purely opinion...

Roy was aveing 19 and 9 and JOB was saying he needs to play better thats BS. It is like JOB thought Roy was Dwight Howard or shaq in his prime.
