When your intrepid traveling beat writer wakes up each morning
on the road, he often has little idea what is going to come out of
that day’s shootaround. Friday in Indiana, we got drawn into a
debate between George Hill and Matt Bonner. The topic: Is Jared
Fogle, the famously formerly fat guy from those Subway ads,
still alive? Jared is from Bloomington, Ind., just up the road from
Conseco Fieldhouse, and is a frequent guest at Pacers games. He
also has been a fixture at IUPUI games, which is how Hill became
acquainted with him in college. “I asked someone if Jared was
going to be at the game tonight,” Hill said. “They said they heard
he died.” Bonner, the team’s resident sandwich expert and a guy
who would probably...CONTINUE READING AT MYSANANTONIO.COM (http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/2011/01/07/spurs-hill-happy-to-hear-jared-from-subway-still-alive/)

Dude is a good coach, and his game does work, but it is probably suited more for the college level, where he can recruit the players that best fit his game, thats why he had success in Boston, Pitino recruited the players he needed to win, then left right before he had enough talent to win.

I love seeing PG and Hansbrough get real minutes, we can lose every game and I will watch if we play these guys.

Hansbrough tries harder than anybody else on the court, everytime he is on the floor....as a coach I would think that would consistently earn minutes. Also, like many have said PG has the potential to be the best Pacer since Reggie Miller. KEEP PLAYING THESE GUYS!!!!! Finally, I am semi excited about the Pacers again.

We better hope Posey doesn't hit a three when he gets minutes tonight...i've noticed if Posey hits a three early on...it's over he is playing heavy minutes the rest of the game.

xBulletproof

Tyler with 8 points, 4 rebounds and a block in the first quarter. I dig it.

Paul looked good. His movement on offense is a lot better than it was at the beginning of the year.

Sookie

TJ will be the key to beating the Spurs. If he and Tyler keep on hitting those midrange shots, we will be able to win.

If the Pacers are depending on TJ for the win, the Pacers will lose. He's made some shots, but he's been a terrible point guard. The sad thing is, DC might have been worse. (Although, at least he doesn't pound the ball for 18 seconds every time down the court.)

I'm all for trying Lance or Dun at PG. And that's saying something because I'm dead set against Lance being a PG.

Jon Theodore
01-07-2011, 08:42 PM
TJ Ford is a scorer...anyone who doesn't know that yet has serious issues. I never expect TJ Ford to go out there and get 10 assists...when he gets his shot going he can score in bunches and take over a game....Flox was correct...TJ's offensive game will be a key for us tonight.

If the Pacers are depending on TJ for the win, the Pacers will lose. He's made some shots, but he's been a terrible point guard.

The Spurs give up only midrange shots with very little contestation. Tyler and Ford are the ones who are hitting them tonight. If they play well, we win.

I don't care if TJ doesn't pass to people tonight. His midrange shot is the most effective weapon against the Spurs. That may make him a bad point guard in your eyes, but it's a winning strategy.

Jon Theodore
01-07-2011, 08:44 PM

The Spurs give up only midrange shots with very little contestation. Tyler and Ford are the ones who are hitting them tonight. If they play well, we win.

I don't care if TJ doesn't pass to people tonight. His midrange shot is the most effective weapon against the Spurs. That may make him a bad point guard in your eyes, but it's a winning strategy.

TJ DOES have a decent mid range game, I guess people forget the game winners against Philly for example. It is also what the Spurs D tends to give up

People who dislike TJ with fever tend to overlook the positives he does bring

It wasn't the fact that TJ was taking midrange jumpers. That is a shot he hits well.

It's when he was talking them and the fact that he'd dribble the ball for 18 seconds, run around in circles and then shoot the shoot.

I have no problem, and I doubt anyone does, with TJ taking that shot in the flow of the offense. Which as you said, should happen because the Spurs give it up. But that's not what he was doing.

The Spurs defense is weaker when you force them to rotate and make them cover. In the flow of the offense TJ has to recognize that penetration and forcing them to react to him is the best way to attack the Spurs defense.

When the Spurs go zone, they need to overload. So far, TJ and Collison have done well.

Serious Question:

I personally think it's because we keep on bringing in new players- that prevents people from learning the system. It makes our defense and offense weaker if the players don't know where to be at what time. That is due to the roster turnover, lack of talent, and youth of the roster.

The rotations, is something that I don't really think is that big of a deal, but can play a factor.

Also- we can't be forcing midrange. The last two midrange shots have been forced. We need to take them at the right time. That was clearly not the right time.

I don't like the ideal of Hans covering Neal, Ginobili, Parker, or Hill. Who would you have Tyler cover?

I remember the last time the Spurs used this lineup- they blew the game out with a run similar like this. I don't know what the right counter to this is- we may need Dahntay. But he will probably kill us on offense.

If I had to coach this, I'd go Collison Ford Rush Granger Hibbert/Foster depending on who is the bigman.

And yes, it's really funny how much we disagree on things. :buddies:

Neither one of them are big enough to guard Tyler. If Tyler gets the ball down low, he'd get a foul and most likely a layup. If he does miss the shot, he'll get his own rebound. He's just too big and strong for a guard/wing to cover.

This only works if you slow the game down though.

I don't disagree that they can't cover him well, but they can probably cover. I think that's how Pop will counter. They are at least doing a better job than Bonner. George on Ginobili was bound to happen if George saw the floor. That could be a mistake, but not playing George can also be a mistake by some members of the board. It's confusing.

The 11-0 run is not something I'd think a timeout would solve.

Do you guys see how much better DC is at playmaking when he has a PnP guy?! I've been trying to stress this for the longest time. He's an awesome playmaker when he gets the guys. Tyler has bee wide open all night.

Thats also a product of the Spurs system. I don't think he gets these looks against other teams.

Expect Pop to adjust here. McDyess, Jefferson are all options here.

I think Ginobili can guard Hans.

I absolutely do not agree with this.

Pacers going 2-3 zone. Not sure why.

I think to keep Roy out of foul trouble and help with Duncan and Parker

Oh so thats Ginobili on Tyler then? Not sure why you'd bring in Bonner if Ginobili is on Tyler. Probably to close out better...?

Ah thats why...Bonner to stick on Tyler like glue. Blair was playing off of him to much.
