Yeah, but at least we'll be getting back Hollinger's worst ranked NBA player tonight.

I found this to be a little irrelevant.

There's no way we're 29th.

I don't really like Hollinger to begin with.

How is it possible for a team with 14 all stars and 8 hof'ers to be 29th?

anyone who thinks we should tank this early doesnt really care about this team

if a team is doing poorly by march then i think they should call it a season not take it easy

RATING = (((SOS-0.5)/0.037)*0.67) + (((SOSL10-0.5)/0.037)*0.33) + 100 + (0.67*(MARG+(((ROAD-HOME)*3.5)/(GAMES))) + (0.33*(MARGL10+(((ROAD10-HOME10)*3.5)/(10)))))

SOS = Season win/loss percentage of team's opponents, expressed as a decimal (e.g., .500)

SOSL10 = Season win/loss percentage of team's last 10 opponents, expressed as a decimal (e.g., .500)

MARG = Team's average scoring margin

MARGL10 = Team's average scoring margin over the last 10 games

HOME = Team's home games

HOMEL10 = Team's home games over the last 10 games

ROAD = Team's road games

ROADL10 = Team's road games over the last 10 games

GAMES = Team's total games

Posting a losing record against a weak strength of schedule and getting torched by Philly hurts us statistically in this formula

I'm 90% convinced he barely watches the games, if at all. His formula has proven to "work" in that it usually picks out the favorite at the start of the playoffs, but guess what? So does the eyeball test.

I take this with less than a grain of salt and I think Hollinger's analysis is completely worthless.

It was a joke. More an allusion to some people who tend to severely overrate this Pacers roster.

In the end we are probably closer to what people predicted we would be. A 30-35 game winner.

if u watch the nba like i do i say they both deserve it for now they both have been pretty bad so far. Jazz have to figure out how AL jefferson is gonna fit in. OKC durant has played like :censored: so far so they will be back in the top 10-15 both teams i bet

These rankings aren't about Hollinger watching the games and noting the intangibles. This is purely a statistical ranking based on his formula. Come on guys look at the rankings and what they mean before you go off on him.

That said, 29th is about right as far as I can see. Maybe there is the potential to be 16th or so, which I see as maxing out the talent on the team, but that is not going to happen with Jim coaching, his "system" and substitutions and groups of players he puts on the floor together.

These rankings are determined mathematically. Hollinger isn't picking them. He's running the math. This early in the season, things are going to be off. For example, one bad loss at the beginning of the season is more dramatic than at the end of the season because the stats aren't diluted over the length of the season.

We've got a weak strength of schedule thus far that's hurting the math. Granted we shouldn't have lost to the 76ers, but they were due and it was a home game for them.

We should have won the Bucks game for we led that game a lot, particularly the 3rd quarter.

I give no credence to this type of ranking til at least a month into the season.

Go Pacers!

FEED THE HIPPO!

This system is driven by points scored vs points against. Getting blown out by philly really hurt us with only 5 games played.

I bet we move up tomorrow.:-)

John Hollinger is a numbers expert, this is all automated and he has used this formula in his rankings for 5 years now. It's not what he ranks the teams according to what he thinks, its a system of rankings that uses strength of schedule and point differential being the two main factors. So far Pacers have had the easiest schedule out of anyone in the league and have managed to only win two.

I don't think anybody argues that Hollinger is indeed using a formula... I think many of us agree that the formula is flawed and that it's pointless to even post a list at this stage of the game.

Well it looks like tonights game reset the balance. Especially since it was against the team that was previously ranked 5th according to Hollinger's "formula".

I'm not sure how any can trust someone's statistical system when they say the (1-5) Rockets are ranked higher than the (5-1) Spurs.

Strength of scheduled is determined by wins and losses of the season, so the Charlotte win doesn't look as good because they're starting off slow for the season.

Hollinger's rankings aren't worth much this early in the year given the small sample sizes, but after 30 games or so they're pretty darn good.

IIRC, he used to start publishing them only after a couple of months into the season because of that. They aren't worth any attention at this point of the schedule.
