View Full Version : The Drafting Game 2

Just thought I'd throw this out to see if there was any interest.

We are having a pretty good time with the first one & it is slow around here.

I will not be involved in running or playing in a 2nd game this summer but I hope there would be enough interest from others to make the game work.

Anyone interested in playing or running the game?

Ultimate Frisbee

i'd play... i'll also consider running it, i guess it really just matters how busy my fall will be.

Jose Slaughter

The first game should be finished with the draft by the end of the month.

I doubt the season & playoffs will take long. We really haven't talked about a schedule yet.

Joel

I'd play a second round.

RimBender

I'd play, just because I have no life and this gives me something to look forward to.

Yes, It's kind of sad......

RimBender

I think we should have restrictions though, I think it makes it more fun.

Like no players with salaries over a certain price.

or

No Wilt or Russell.

or

American only.

Something like that. Having open games takes away skills/competition/fun IMO.

RimBender
08-22-2004, 10:10 PM
And one more thing....(Yah i guess i could've put this all in one post.)

A better and faster draft.

This has been like 3 weeks and we aren't finished.

Maybe less people, or time limits less than 3 days.

RimBender
08-22-2004, 10:12 PM
Oh and I broke 200 posts.

Go ME!

SoupIsGood
08-22-2004, 10:14 PM
It'd be tough to make that draft go faster.

maybe a speed draft, where everyone has agreed on a time to be online, and you have to pick with no research, just off the top of your head.

Jose Slaughter
08-22-2004, 10:26 PM
The reason for the long draft in the first game is mainly due to the great void of activity during August & September around here.

I saw no need in rushing thru the draft in 2 weeks & then having nothing to do for another month & a half.

I could see a smaller group or a salary cap but I wouldn't limit the game too much.

The one thing I wish they had on the What if Sports site would be "career stats". Instead of using a single season stat for a player you could use his averages for his career.

Yeah... I really don't mind the long draft time... It does allow us to pass the no-Pacer-activity-time much faster...

So far there is interest from:

I'd be up fr a game with fewer people. That would speed things up and make for some more powerful teams.

Joel
08-23-2004, 02:49 AM
Maybe an ABA version of this game would fly. Does whatifsports have ABA players?

Jose Slaughter
08-23-2004, 03:26 AM
yes they do.

I was also thinking that we could each pick a certain team & only select players from that team.

An all time Celtics, Lakers, Bulls, Pacers etc.

Jose That "All-Time" Team is a great idea.

I would love to play someting like that.

No one else wants to play?
and
Who's gonna run this if we do play?!

Jose Slaughter
08-25-2004, 02:16 PM
I think I Love the Pacers is gonna do this one.

The upside to each of us drafting from just one team i, you can log on, select your team & be done with it.

Everyone can draft at the same time & you would have the draft done in less than a day.

dipperdunk
08-25-2004, 07:18 PM
I would play again.

I'll consider it if we do the all time team thing

I'll do the all time team thing, but not the other due to the lack of time.

Hey, you get Elton Brand ;)

RimBender
08-25-2004, 09:02 PM
But some players played for more than one team.

How we gonna work that out?

Pig Nash
08-25-2004, 09:12 PM
You can only use the years he was with your team. fairly simple solution i think.

Roaming Gnome
08-25-2004, 09:22 PM
Well, if you get the

:clippers:, you get http://www.logoserver.com/basketball/BuffaloBraves3.GIF

So, that isn't too bad.

So when we starting this bad boy up?

Jose Slaughter
08-25-2004, 09:46 PM
Lets let I Love the Pacers work up some guidelines & see how many players we have. The size won't matter in this league since the draft will be done so quickly.

How should be pick our teams?

Lottery?, first pick gets to select any team he wants?

Ultimate Frisbee
08-25-2004, 10:08 PM
The game can really encompass any number of players less than about 20 or so. Obviously the Celts and Lakers have the richest histories so they will probably win if we don't either exclude them or make a restriction on total salary or based on some other criteria.

Let me know if you support the "salary-cap" type of draft or if you have a better idea.

Also, how many players should we draft?

Right now we have interest from (11 total):

ILovethePacers
Rim Bender
Joel
burnzone
Roaming Gnome
dipperdunk
SoupisGood?
Pig Nash
Jose Slaughter

I'll play if we do the all-time thing.

I don't think we should restrict it really, although the salary cap wouldn't be all that bad. But definetly allow the Lakers and Celts.

Jose Slaughter
08-26-2004, 12:05 AM
The what if sports site is set up for you to draft 2 centers, 4 forwards & 4 guards, so I guess 10 players.

Salary cap is fine with me.

I also think the Lakers & Celtics should be in.

able
08-26-2004, 05:23 AM
depending on when and how you can count me in

Joel
08-26-2004, 05:43 AM
The Lakers altime team would destroy any other team.
Jerry West, Magic , Wilt, Kareem, Mikan, Baylor, Goodrich, Worthy, Shaq, Kobe, etc. Ouch!

able
08-26-2004, 06:07 AM
are we "drawing straws" for who gets which team?

Roaming Gnome
08-26-2004, 07:31 AM
I would suggest doing this one after Drafting Game 1...

:twocents:

Ultimate Frisbee
08-26-2004, 12:57 PM
yeah... this one wont start until after the current one ends.

If able plays, we will have 12 total players.

I think we should put a cap on the total salary of the team... Hence, if we have a total of 10 players, perhaps it should be on the order of 6-7 million per player... so a total of 60-70 million.

Agree? Disagree?

Jose Slaughter
08-26-2004, 02:02 PM
Works for me.

RimBender
08-26-2004, 03:14 PM
I'm in.

We just gonna randomly draw names for 1st team pick?

SycamoreKen
08-26-2004, 07:33 PM
I would say the 70 million sounds good. That's about what our teams in game 1 will average.

I also like the idea of only 12 players. If we go with that, why don't we go ahead and do the drawing and select our teams. That will give us until the end of game 1 to pick the players and years we want to use. We could also have the schedule in place as well.

Ultimate Frisbee
08-26-2004, 10:31 PM
Ok... Here are the rules:

I'll give it another day for people to join the game.

I will then randomize the picking order for teams by allowing a non-participant randomize them for me.

After the order is decided, the first player may pick their franchise.

Players and teams from ABA and NBA years allowed.

You may pick a franchise that has changed cities (i.e. Minneapolis and L.A. Lakers are the same team and so are Charlotte and New Orleans Hornets).

You may pick a franchise that has changed names (i.e. The Washington Bullets are the same as the Washington Wizards).

After the first drafting game ends and all franchises are chosen, you will have a total of 1 week to pick your teams (unless you think we need more time).

You will pick 10 players.

The total salary must be equal to or under 70 million dollars.

I need help on this last part, since I'm not too sure about using Whatifsports, but here's what I've come up with so far:

Depending on the number of players and drafting order, I will construct a single elimination tournament bracket. The highest seeds (lowest draft order) will have byes if necessary.

Currently we still have 12 participants... but 16 would be nice! Please tell me if I missed you or if you want to play.

Participants:

ILovethePacers
Rim Bender
Joel
burnzone
Roaming Gnome
dipperdunk
SoupisGood
Pig Nash

Below is the picking order. Please pick your franchise in order, starting with MagicRat, when you get the chance (no rush.. as we are in no hurry to finish this game since the last game hasn't even ended yet). If the picking starts taking on the order of multiple days, then we will have to institute a time limit. I'm going to make a new thread and hopefully we can sticky it to the top, so make your picks there... Anyone else wanting to play is free to be added to the bottom of this list so long as the game isn't over.

1.) MagicRat
2.) Able
3.) Dipperdunk
4.) Jose Slaughter
5.) Rim Bender
6.) Pig Nash
7.) Burnzone
8.) Roaming Gnome
9.) SoupisGood
10.) ILovethePacers
11.) MSA2CF
12.) Joel

I know what you mean...

However, I think it'll be fun being at the bottom... more room to pick a franchise that you like, or to pull a surprise upset in the tourney
