End of the 1st Quarter:
USA 26
LTU 23

I like the higher defensive intensity that the US is playing with in this game. Their outside shooting doesn't look much better, but they're making a better effort pressuring Lithuania all over the court.

Richard Jefferson resembled something other than a useless slug today.

Anthony hit a couple of backets, but needed like 6 shots to do so, and he got beat repeatedly on D.

Duncan s our biggest ace, we have to take advanatge of that more.

LTU really packing things in, need to keep the lead to close out the 3rd, it feels like the momentum could start to slip a little for the US

We are a better team than Lithuania. its that simple.

Im honestly kinda glad we lost... I think it's funny!

I really dont have much respect for many of the players on the team at all. I'd like to see Dwayne Wade do well, other than him, I dont care about any of the other guys.

Since JO had to exit the team due to injury, and since they didnt invite reggie/he didnt want to go, I think its actually quite fun rooting against them, just to see the reaction of the press and fans.

The players on this team for the most part are low class players... are they "good" nba players, sure I suppose. But low class. for example: AI, richard jefferson, Stephon, etc.

just my opinion.

The way they shot tonight, I'm not suprised they won. Stop blaming the refs, it's nothing but a cop-out excuse.

DisplacedKnick
08-21-2004, 03:00 PM
Well, they've caught up.

Back in '92 when the first Dream Team went to Barcelona some sportscasters were talking about how dominant the US team was and thought the Europeans would eventually catch up. They thought it would take about 20 years.

It took 12. And we actually played pretty well though everyone except Iverson & Jefferson at the end were afraid to shoot.

I'd like to know what LB's offensive scheme was. I think setting a pick has become a lost art or something. But we have to be able to hit a jump shot. And defend the pick-and-roll. Oh well - we can still pull this out.

Oh, and it's nice to know that International refs totally change the way games are called the last five minutes too - problem is, they start calling touch fouls.

Puerto Rico outplayed us. Italy outplayed us. Both of them deserved to win.

Lithuana, on the other hand, wouldn't have been remotely close had the refs not decided to take the game over.

The fact we're playing a team of 5 vlade divac's isnt helping, either.

TMJ31
08-21-2004, 03:06 PM
I guess I just call them low class because I obviously do not hold them in the highest regard. R-Jeff isnt like a bad person or anything, but he is overrated and brings very little in my opinion. That ESPN article that made fun of team usa made the best comments on him. "he brings the ball down the court, tries to dunk but misses, and screams really loud trying to sound badass".

thats pretty much why

Well, we couldn't shoot. We couldn't hit a free throw and we couldn't defend the pick-and-roll.

If you ignore the ability to shoot we totally dominated the game. Unfortunately, being able to shoot matters.

Props to Lithuania. They played a gutsy game and shot the rock well. I loved the fire of Sarunas Jasikevicius; he wasn't about to be intimidated.

(I had to copy the name from the roster above. I'll admit I had no idea of who he was before today. Saw Pops kissing up to him after the game. :) )

The USA played better together as a team, too, although things got very ragged toward the end.

This is not over. These guys are catching on to what they need to do to win. But, I will say I thought I saw some tightening of the neck muscles in the fourth quarter. Most of our players don't have much confidence in their shot right now.

It was a good game. Lithuania shot lights out and did a good job guarding the interior. Strombergas
is a flopping machine in the mold of Vlade Divac and Brian Cardinal, and like both of those players, gets away with it often.

We need some shooters. BADLY.

Fascinating. People blaming the refs and people blaming the guys ho decided not to go. What about the refs that decided not to go. The olympics wanted a bunch of NBA and Euro pro refs. They could only convince one NBA ref to go the oympics. Sad.

No - I won't do it. I absolutely refuse to believe that things would be better in any form of organized basketball with NBA refs present.

Actually I take that back - they'd have allowed more grabbing and holding down the stretch which would have helped us but today's refs were no worse than most in the NBA - do wish they knew what a moving screen is though.

I'm amazed with the excuses everyone is coming up with. Face reality - the world plays basketball 'the right way' - the USA guys (sorry - can't call them TEAM) don't.

Refs, flops, a bad call .............. you all sound like a bitter Pacer fan after we lose a game. USA shoots 44%, Lithuania shoots 52%.

There's your 'difference'.
