Troy Murphy was supposed to return from his groin injury on Saturday against the Sixers. But the Nets announced Friday morning that Murphy has suffered a lower back injury, putting him out indefinitely. "An MRI performed today confirmed a low back strain/inflammation," reads the Nets' statement.

Murphy will not travel with the team to Russia and China and will be reevaluated when the team returns.

I think the Nets mostly wanted Murph for cap relief, which it wouldnt matter if he was hurt or not

I think they got him for a one year rental while Favours gets used to the NBA. Besides Favors, they really dont have a starting-calibre PF...plus, Murphy would be good to play with Lopez...Murphy would stretch the offense out which would make it hard to double team Lopez

I still think Orlando would benefit the most with a guy like Murphy. I think Dwight's offensive game would elevate if they have a real PF (not Lewis) who could stretch the floor

I guess I'm the only one who feels bad for Murph. Even though it didn't work out here, I was still hoping he would play well for the Nets and being back home.

Hope it's not too lingering. Perhaps the basketball gods forgot he was traded from the Pacers?

I'm with you on this one.

I've met and spoke to Murph numerous times when he was here and he's a really cool guy so for his sake I hope he gets better soon.

Didn't NJ just give up Courtney Lee and ended up taking on Murphy and, hence, salary in the trade and wanted the expiring contract as potential tradebait?

Not with any severity. Neither DC himself or the team ever seemed concerned with it.

DC had a broken pinky that healed about 3 weeks after the trade.

No you're certainly not.
Murph had his flaws, as do all players.
But he worked hard and represented the team honorably.
He became the whipping boy here for whatever reason.
I wish him nothing but success and happiness.

If he never got hurt after that season, everyone would be thinking and wishing differently.

Everyone? Not me, I wanted him gone when the trade bringing him here was announced. They would've been wise to dump him ASAP any time throughout his charmed season. BTW, before reading the thread I knew it'd be you & peewee as the only two voices of support for Murphy.

This...If Mike comes back and plays well this year his value will be at it's highest as the deadline nears.
