OSTON (Ticker) - Danny Ainge continued his trend of adding veterans to the Boston Celtics, signing injury-plagued forward Tom Gugliotta on Monday.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but Gugliotta likely received the veterans exception after making more than $11 million last season.

Gugliotta, 34, averaged just 2.9 points and shot 35 percent last season for Phoenix and Utah. Yet Ainge, Boston's executive director of basketball operations, believes Gugliotta can be a valuable player off the bench.

"We're getting a very versatile player," Ainge said. "He is a guy that can play a little bit of center in a pinch for (coach) Doc (Rivers). He can play small forward, can play power forward. He can pass, he can shoot and create off the dribble. He's a complete basketball player."

But the 6-10 Gugliotta has averaged just 46 games over the last seven seasons due to an assortment of injuries.

Ainge acquired two veterans - guard Gary Payton and forward Rick Fox - from the Los Angeles Lakers in a multi-player deal on August 6. However, Payton failed to report for a physical, forcing the trade to be amended.

Like Payton and Fox, Gugliotta is clearly on the downside of his career. After being acquired by Utah from Phoenix last season, Gugliotta started 24 of 25 games and averaged 3.7 points and 5.2 rebounds.

Gugliotta turned in his best season in 1996-97 for the Minnesota Timberwolves, averaging 20.6 points and 8.7 rebounds and earning an All-Star berth. He has career averages of 13.5 points and 7.6 rebounds in 12 seasons with five teams.

Well, I heard speculation that he'd go back to Minnesota. Guess his prior relationship with Ainge won out (or perhaps Minny simply didn't want him.)
