Figured we could go ahead and start ONE thread here so that they board doesn't have 87 new threads with every little thing that comes out today. Media day starts in 30 minutes (at Noon). Hopefully we get some cool pics, videos, articles, etc. from today's event.

Michael Grady says that you can tweet to him with any questions for particular players that you would like to have answered.

First bit of information to be tweeted from Mike Wells is some good news...

http://twitter.com/MikeWellsNBA/status/25697417154

O'Brien said they plan to work through Hibbert in the post this season.

http://twitter.com/MikeWellsNBA/status/25697840170

Pacers will have every player available for the start of camp tomorrow.

If Obie is shooting straight right now with all the info that has been posted via Twitter (PF's in the post now that Troy is gone, and running a half court offense that is focused on Roy) I will be very impressed with him.

I'm still not sure he'll be a great coach, but I'll at least give him bonus points for being flexible.

The removal of Troy may be the key. He was a crutch and his play style forced the team to design our offense a certain way.

My question got answered:

[Comment From Bryon: ]
Coach O'Brien: If the season started tomorrow, what would be the starting lineup?

12:02 Coach: I think if we started tonight, it would be Hibbert at center, Granger at SF, Dunleavy at SG, Collison at PG, and McRoberts at the PF spot. Obviously that is subject to change, but if you put me on the spot - that's who I would start right now.

If Dun's in 07-08 form, Rush or George most likely wouldn't even sniff starting minutes at the SG spot. I don't see either of them averaging anywhere close to 19 points a game.

Roughly how many minutes per game should we expecting to see Josh McRoberts on the court? How to you envision our PF rotation?

Monday September 27, 2010 12:08 Derek L
12:10 Coach: As I mentioned, I believe Josh has an opportunity to be a starter for us. The role that I define for Josh is to run the court, go after every rebound on both ends of the court, and when he has the ball in his hands as a playmaker - to do something positive with the basketball. He is not being evaluated as a 3pt shooter. He has skills that are different than Troy Murphy's and will be evaluated on the 3 things that I listed.

"He is not being evaluated as a 3pt shooter. He has skills that are different than Troy Murphy's and will be evaluated on the 3 things that I listed." Monday September 27, 2010 12:10 Coach

I am really impressed with this statement. I have assumed that the coach will change up the usage of his players and this is really telling about the role we are asking from McRoberts. The three things he listed, running the court, rebounding, and being productive with the ball in his hands, are all areas our team has needed to improve and he has the confidence in McRoberts to fill those roles. He might not be as confident in McRoberts as he is forced to use him, but at least the thought process is there IMO.

I am pleasantly surprised to see that he listed McRoberts. I really like Hansborough as well, but coach is not expecting to give him big minutes initially. At least Seth is getting his wish a year and a half late.

You're lying if you said it'd be easy for you to stop seeing some of your life time friends. Even if you knew they compromised you some times. You'd remember the good times more than the bad.

It's a hard decision to make speaking as someone who has had to do it.

Maybe not feel bad, but I can at least understand the pain that can be associated with that decision and applaud him for doing it. (Assuming it's true and not just lip service.)

And Duke gave the right answer already, too. Most people are expected to have skills and knowledge beyond the specific, primary requirements of their jobs. At my new job, I'm required to know the emergency evacuation procedure. But that doesn't mean they hired me to set the building on fire.

Josh McRoberts is going to man the boards, but whenever there's a situation where he's holding the ball outside, O'Brien reasonably wants to have confidence that McRoberts can do better with the ball than, say, Jeff Foster can.

I feel you pain. I had submitted several questions and then finally dumbed it down before they took one of mine.
That and I'm tired of everyone asking Tyler about his health. He's in camp, deal with it what ever news comes out.

Ugh.

That and who cares what NFL team what player likes!? Who cares if TJ Ford has played NBA 2K11!? Idiotic nonsense. I want to know about the season, and the preparation. None of this fluff bull****.

My last question, and it was to Dahntay:

Dahntay, the wing position is pretty stacked going into the season. What do you feel is the best way to crack the rotation coming out of training camp for yourself, Rush or PG?

**** you, Pacers Chat. I'm out.

I'm sure other players and fans wouldn't make fun of Tyler's helmet. Other fans, mascots, vendors, cheerleaders, announcers, his own teammates, small children in attendance....

Are you kidding, I'd make fun of Tyler's helmet , doesn't mean I don't think it'd be a good idea.

I think a lot of us (including myself) read a little too much into it when this all started. I've been told by several different people within the franchise that O'Brien didn't want McRoberts to work on his three point shot, but more his outside jumper.

Then again I could be wrong...

SMosley21

I'll never understand the people that got butt hurt about McBob shooting the extra 3's early in the summer. He was doing that IN ADDITION to his regular workouts. It's not like the 3's were the only thing he was working on.

That's like saying "hey basketball player, why are you trying to improve your ability to shoot a basketball? Stop doing that!"

Nice summary of Pacers Media Day over at Indycornrows. Might warrant its' own thread but I'll put it here for now. Interesting comments re: Brandon, Lance, and Danny's interactions with both. I like most of what I am hearing from JOB and I may be a fool but I am cautiously optimistic that this isn't going to be another case of say one thing and do another (not really sure how to take the TJ comments though).

http://www.indycornrows.com/2010/9/27/1715464/indiana-pacers-media-day-first-impressions

Media day brings about a lot of bland quotes as players and coaches work hard to talk their way through all of the questions without saying anything newsworthy. It's more of a necessary evil, the last hurdle to clear before getting back on the court for real once again.

When in doubt, regardless of the player, they're all excited for the season to begin, think all of their teammates have had a great offseason and definitely expect to make a push for the playoffs if they can stay healthy.

There was plenty of that at today's media day with the Indiana Pacers (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/indiana-pacers), but also some noteworthy comments along the way so I thought I'd offer up my first impressions from what I heard and saw today, paraphrased for your convenience.

There was a different dynamic at play with two players coming off franchise-embarrassing situations. Surprisingly both Brandon Rush (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/35075/brandon-rush) and Lance Stephenson (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/112009/lance-stephenson) faced the media head on. Also, Tyler Hansbrough (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/71913/tyler-hansbrough) talked after being in near exile for about eight months.

But let's start where the day began, with Jim O'Brien's press conference and keep in mind I'm paraphrasing.
http://cdn1.sbnation.com/images/blog/star-divide.v5e9d7f1.jpg

JOB is happy with the offseason changes that made the team more athletic and expects to adjust his offensive game plan with Troy Murphy (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/21513/troy-murphy) no longer available as a stretch four and Darren Collison (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/71921/darren-collison) running the point. Emphasized that Collison is in his second year and they've discussed how much he will grow on the court this year. Despite all of the responsibility Collison will have he isn't a seasoned veteran so he'll grow along with the team.

Without breaking character or even cracking a smile, JOB said how happy he was to have T.J. Ford's experience available as part of the point guard group. With Collison, A.J. Price (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/71948/a-j-price) and Lance Stephenson they are lacking experience.

JOB thought the team's vets had a positive summer singling out Danny Granger (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/21709/danny-granger) and Roy Hibbert. Granger's first comment to JOB when they discussed his Team USA experience was that Chauncey Billups (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/21686/chauncey-billups) is a great leader on and off the court. As for Hibbert, JOB thought his summer was one of the best he's witnessed and that Roy really understands that ultimately, player development is up to the individual.

Talking about playing a different style, JOB mention Josh McRoberts (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/24276/josh-mcroberts) and his discussion with Josh about his role on the team. The three key expectations are for Josh to run the floor, rebound and take care of the ball when he has it. Notice there is no mention of shooting. Josh's play won't be evaluated by his shooting and JOB is not trying to make him or any other PF play like Troy Murphy.

The offense may run similar sets but emphasize different players within the options of a certain play. The difference should show up in transition as well. Murph used to love trailing the fast break and set up for a three. With Roy on the court that left two players to run ahead of the ball. Now with power forwards capable of running the floor they'll have more options to push the ball up the court and then Hibbert can trail and be part of the play if need be.

This leads to the most note-worthy comment of the day in my book, that JOB does intend to run the half court offense through Hibbert both in the low and high post which will utilize his scoring and passing ability.

During Hibbert's interview time he discussed taking a larger role in the offense and mentioned he's thinking about triple-doubles with his passing ability out of the high post.

Danny Granger offered his usual concise answers and is excited to play with Collison and found his time with Team USA to be a great learning experience. Leadership was the biggest take-away he had after spending time around Chauncey Billups and Coach K. As for his game and the next step, Granger said he needs to win. There are no other stats or individual measures that will show his improvement other than helping his team win.

Granger likes what he's seen from some teammates since returning. Hibbert looks great physically and he swears the big fella hasn't missed a jump hook yet. Also mentioned that Dunleavy looked to be in great shape and ready to go. He spoke with Lance Stephenson after his arrest trying to support the young player and also show some leadership.

Tyler Hansbrough looks stout and ready to play. He didn't want to get into specifics over the diagnosis of his inner-ear ailment but he's been cleared to play and confident there won't be a re-occurrence. While he was able to work on basketball skills during the summer, his on-court fitness is still lagging behind so while he's cleared to take part in practice with no restrictions he still expects to ease into camp until his fitness level catches up.

I must say, Brandon Rush impressed me during his interview. The guy hates this type of drill on his best day, but he stood up strong to every question about his suspension and answered in an affirmative voice, taking responsibility for the mess he put himself in. He expects the suspension to cost him playing time that he'll have to earn back with his play after he sits out the first five games. Rush also mentioned the obvious need to make some changes in his life and leave a few long-time friends behind. We've heard this proclamation before from other athletes in a similar situation so that deserves a big...we'll see.

Rush also mentioned Danny Granger calling and giving him an earful after the news of the suspension was released. Have to give Granger credit for some leadership growth considering he took time during a busy time in his life to reach out to Rush and Stephenson.

I was a little surprised to see Brandon Rush face the media, but I was closer to shocked when Lance Stephenson took his turn in front of the mics. The team is giving him a lot of support until his court date on October 19th that's for sure. Stephenson didn't stray far from his talking points. He's trying to be a better person and is lucky to have the Pacers supporting him. He wants to work hard on and off the court to represent the Pacers well. It wasn't about what he said but that he said anything at all.

Clark Kellogg was also on hand and hovering around all of the player interviews. He was clearly there supporting the players, especially Rush and Stephenson. He wasn't holding up cue cards with answers but occasionally he'd offer an approving nod as the players waded through some tricky questions. He even shared a laugh with Rush after his interview after Rush physically exhaled and said, "I made it."

Mike Dunleavy's knee remains pain free and he ready to play whatever role is needed on this team. In advance of camp, Dunleavy hasn't played with any of his teammates yet so he deferred comment on any of them until practice starts.Have to credit Dunleavy with a salient point when talking about playoff hopes. There are several other solid teams in the East looking to jump into the playoffs so even if the Pacers improve making the playoffs will still be a challenge.

Darren Collison has played with a lot of his new teammates and loves what they all have to offer. This guy isn't cocky per se but is something between arrogant and confident that I can't quite describe appropriately. He has a positive energy about him that sure seems genuine that would make him both easy to be around and follow at the same time. He just gives off a "let's go" vibe which I hope spreads throughout the roster.

So that sums up the basics from media day until I can dig through all of the quotes. Also, be sure to check out Pacers.com as Bruno Scorsese was capturing the event on video.

Connrad brunner for pacers.com

If you were looking for bold pronouncements or major breaking news, this was not the place.

If you, like me, enjoy reading between the lines, media day offered a plethora of interesting material Monday at Conseco Fieldhouse.

To wit:

•Talk of the playoffs was muted. Asked of his expectation for the team, Coach Jim O'Brien said he was going into the season "with the idea of getting this team involved in a playoff race." That approach takes pressure off the young team, which should in turn help it progress more naturally.

•There was unabashed enthusiasm expressed when it came to two players: Darren Collison and Roy Hibbert.

•The acquisition of Collison settles a position that has been problematic for the past several seasons. "I definitely feel we are much stronger at the point guard spot," said O'Brien, a sentiment echoed by Granger.

•Hibbert's busy offseason that included a boot camp with Bill Walton and MMA training resulted in a drop of four percent body fat and 20 pounds. "He's lost a lot of weight, he's blocking shots," said Granger, "and I don't think he's missed a jump hook since I've been back." O'Brien went so far as to say Hibbert "had one of the best summers I've ever witnessed in my years of coaching."

•Though T.J. Ford is relegated to backup status with Collison on board, he has not been marginalized. O'Brien said Ford's experience will be very important in the point guard rotation because Collison and A.J. Price are very young players and Lance Stephenson is a rookie. "We're so happy to have someone with T.J.'s experience to be part of that point guard corps," he said. "This is a situation T.J. can be a very important part of."

•O'Brien isn't quite sure what to expect, other than rustiness, when Tyler Hansbrough takes the court for camp Tuesday. He will be patient in his expectations for the second-year power forward. "I think by the end of this year we'll know what we have in Tyler," he said, "and we'll be very pleased with what we have."

•The experience of winning a gold medal in the FIBA World Championship was not lost on Granger. Though he played sparingly, he watched and learned from his Team USA teammates and coaches, particularly when it came to leadership. "Watching Chauncey Billups, the way he handles himself, the way he talks to other players," Granger said. "Everybody had to take something from that." That was good news for O'Brien. "Player leadership is always important," he said," but even more important when you're a little young and people do not think you can reach a certain standard."

•With Troy Murphy gone, the Pacers likely will attempt fewer 3-pointers but that won't necessarily mean a philosophical shift by O'Brien. "It's not a matter of forcing them into a system," he said. "We change our system every year." Rather than trailing the break and spotting up at the arc, O'Brien expects the fours to run to the rim in transition.

•I might really be reaching here but I came away with the feeling Josh McRoberts enters camp as the most likely starter at power forward. Hansbrough may emerge as the starter later in the year but it appears J-Mac could be the guy, at least for now.

•The Pacers have no lingering medical issues heading into camp said O'Brien, a rarity in recent years. Hansbrough (vertigo), Foster (back), Collison (hand) and Price (knee) all had been battling health problems in the offseason.

•Brandon Rush and Lance Stephenson both stood in front of the cameras and handled themselves well in their first interviews since their offseason issues. O'Brien made it clear both have much to prove both on and off the court.

•He's won a gold medal, been an All-Star and the NBA's Most Improved Player. So what's the next step for Granger? "I need to win, that's my biggest thing," he said. "However we're going to do that, that's what we've got to do. We have a lot of pieces but we always say that at the start of the season. We need to develop consistency and gel together … We all need to be on the same page and develop that winning attitude."

Rolle, Allred signed, so camp roster at 17

The Pacers announced the signing of second-round pick Magnum Rolle and free agent Lance Allred. The two young power forwards bring the camp roster to 17. Allred is the only player in camp without a guaranteed contract, meaning another move must be made for the Pacers to clear the roster spot to keep Rolle.

That's the 1st I've seen that Rolle's contract is guaranteed. I wonder if it's both years? 2nd rounders seldom get guaranteed contracts.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. It's wrong anyway, Price and McBob aren't guaranteed, so the info isn't that great. :) I'm still scratching my head over Lance being guaranteed.

Lances talent warrents a guaranteed deal but his brain doesnt. He will be a really good change of pace he is the opposite of B rush he is agressive.

I'm conservative with that stuff. The Pacers didn't have to give him a guaranteed contract, they had all the power...why give it up?

Price is guaranteed $175k, becoming $380 on opening night.

McBob is already guaranteed $500k, and he becomes fully guaranteed on opening night.

Think Gilbert Arenas

he wass a second round draft pick who became a star and then GS could only offer him a small raise and he cashed a big check with Washington

Are there no pictures from media day? This is MEDIA day, so I assume that I just can't find them anywhere.

Gosh I hope, I want to see if the whole Tyler boulder thing is bluff or if he is really huge.

I also want to see if Roy has really slimmed.

The past few years, I'd find some good stuff on Yahoo Sports.

This year, slimmer pickings. As of now, I only see 8 images. Of those, only these have players in them:

I couldn't agree more. I don't understand Bird's thinking doing it.

I thought this had been explained earlier in the summer. It has to do with future rights if we want to retain a player, and it has to do with showing them loyalty now to hopefully generate some positive goodwill that will encourage the player to return that loyalty in the future, again, when dealing with free agency (or perhaps just being a happy camper in general, too).

I don't have the details, but I'm sure somebody does.

Well, there was an explanation, that in order to maintain future rights you had to give them a guaranteed contract. But I also remember the reasoning behind AJ getting three years was to maintain his rights, and his contract wasn't fully guaranteed.

Anyway, I had thought it was more to do with three years and less to do with it being guaranteed.

I'm pretty sure the players are not allowed to wear helmets, but what about an extra large, heavily padded facemask that happens to cover most of his head? :p

ya, like a wrestler's headpadding ..

I had a bunch of questions answered last year too, not really bragging, more trying to take a personal inventory of how unfortunate it is to be good at something that has no significant value whatsoever. :D

In most cases, the players chose the questions that they wanted to answer -- not realizing many questions were from the same people. Congrats to Speed for his talents of submitting chat questions.
