I really hope he comes out of this. He is going to be a great player, steal of the draft IMO. This is the first time I actually wanted a player all college season long and we actually selected that guy. When will his jersey be available?

I hate watching highlight reels of dunks and layups for rookies.. Yes we know your 6'5 and dominated in highschool. Your NBA talent I hope you could finish with a fingerroll or a drunk. Show us some good videos of shooting form so we know you will not be another tj ford and some good defensive plays against REAL talent.

You didn't notice the ballhandling, passing, or ability to pop a 3 pointer?

Summer league showed quite bit, I thought.

Much more under control than what I expected.

Much stronger than what I expected.

Very tight dribble.

Had trouble staying in front of quick guys, defensively, but not uncorrectable, imho. He showed the ability to punish them though on the other end.

He's really really strong, in an Al Harrington sort of way, in a natural sort of way.

Nice vision. His assist totals were low, but it was mostly missed shots after he set teammates up for open looks, in other words you could for sure see the skills, imo. I counted one game, he would have had 10 assists, at half, if guys were hitting shots.

Did I mention he's really strong.

Teammates deferred to him at crunch time, by choice, which is always telling to me. He, also, seemed unafraid to have the ball in his hands with the clock winding down.

Also, you got the vibe he hated to lose, ya I know we all hate to lose, but I mean really really hated to lose. I guess I'm saying I got a sense, he's ultra competitive, takes it personal.

Things I didn't like:

He went out 3-4 times after being dinged. Although he also got popped by someones head inadvertantly and didn't go out.

He through an elbow at a guy who was pestering him constantly while trying to bring the ball up. It was one of those, oh that was blantant, type of elbows. Think of Kobe on a follow through for his shot with a defender in his grill and he 'accidently' hits in the guy in the face. Oops, I didn't mean to do that. Same thing here.

Otherwise:

It is always hard to tell in summer league, obviously, because of the talent level. To me, he was the best player in the Orlando Summer league, except probably TWILL.

Overall, I think, at barely 20, you could play him as the back up point guard and he wouldn't look out of place on an NBA court. I think he could play right now physically and bring a bunch of really positive results, along with the expected learning experiences.

I don't even want to speculate what his ceiling is...

Lastly, I think TPTB see the same things, the immense talent, and thats really the main reason they are even bothering with all of this crap.

Of course, all of this is predicated on the fact he has his mind right. And I think there is evidence that it's not. So really all of my above ramblings are negated.

Just my opinion.

I guess from your comment you didn't even watch the videos, otherwise you would've seen plenty of that. If by REAL talent you mean non-High School players, you can take a look at how he played in Cincinnati or the Summer Leagues.

If you watch enough of the available video his form looks good, more fluid than George's IMO. That doesn't mean I think he'll be a better shooter than Paul G, I'm just saying I don't think his shooting form will be a problem.

Exactly. These are clips shot documentary style sort of like The Basketball Diaries.

I found a great blog article about Lance and it doesn't sugarcoat his promise and downside at all.

Born Ready

It's March 31st, 2009. Lance Stephenson is late. Again. To his own press conference, which he himself called. Rumor has it he missed his flight completely.

This is the McDonald's All American game week. The premier showcase for high school basketball talent in the entire country. Lance has been invited for a very good reason; he's arguably the best high school player in the country, if not the world. But he's not making a great impression....then again, no one's really surprised about that.

Stephenson is a prodigious talent. Always has been. In 2006...as a high school sophomore....Lance played in an adult all star tournament held at Rucker Park. He dominated. So much so, that Rucker announcer Bobbito Garcia coined a nickname for him. "I'd seen him go up against seasoned NBA veterans, seasoned college cats, high school kids two or three years older than him, and he was always reppin', so I just called it."

"He's Born Ready."

http://cdn0.sbnation.com/imported_assets/468973/lance_20cover-1.jpg

But it hasn't exactly been all smiles for Lance. Far from it, in fact. The Wolves nation is on fire debating the risk/reward of DeMarcus Cousins (whom the front office reportedly is down on). That's fine, that's appropriate. But if you want to take a flier on someone, Lance Stephenson makes Cousins' baggage look like a purse by comparison.

Once ranked as the #1 high school recruit in the nation...and considered John Wall's equal, if not better....Stephenson crashed and burned in the Spring of 2009. And that surprised no one.

Star-divide

Lance's troubles began early. In the summer of 2005, Stephenson vaulted onto the national stage when he out-dueled OJ Mayo at the annual ABCD camp. He then enrolled...."enrolled"....at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn, New York. He attended classes for a grand total of three days. At the end of his first week, Bishop lost in the championship game of the local youth tournament, and Stephenson was denied the MVP trophy.

By the next week, Stephenson was attending Lincoln High in Coney Island....the same high school that turned out former Wolves point guards Stephon Marbury and Sebastian Telfair. Despite the sketchy circumstances that led him to attend the school in the first place, his new coach, Dwanye Morton, had nothing but praise for him. "He always talked about outdoing Sebastian, outdoing Stephon. He's the best I've ever had at Lincoln."

Lincoln High won back to back city titles his sophomore and junior years, winning back to back Player of the Year awards from New York Daily News. In 2008, he was named to USA Today's All-USA team...the only non-senior on the list. By 2009, he had passed Telfair for the all time New York scoring record, and had led his school to an unprecedented 4th consecutive PSAL title. His entire year was documented on the website Born Ready, a half web journal, half reality tv show that had a camera crew following Stephenson around every second of every day.

By the time college recruitment came to the front of Stephenson's life, Lance was considered the top high school player in the nation...even better than John Wall. The dynamic between the two was of production versus potential....Wall had glitz and glam looming, but Stephenson was already there.

The June 2009 issue of SLAM Magazine thought so much of Stephenson, it put him on the cover alongside Wall (the alternate cover, ironically, was Brandon Jennings and Ricky Rubio)

http://cdn2.sbnation.com/imported_assets/469113/3412111835_e6a2004610.jpg

Stephenson is a 6-6, 220-pound tank of a shooting guard, with a yo-yo handle, tremendous range on his jumper, and the moves to either go around or through any defender. Imagine a smaller, more skilled Ron Artest physically, but with the mentality Ron-Ron has on the defensive end transferred to the other side of the ball. His game...is the epitome of a scorer.

If you're talking potential, John Wall is your man. But if you need a kid to get it done right now, Lance Stephenson is the guy you go to, hands down.

As a player....and as a rising icon....Lance Stephenson was unmatched.

Just got done watching all the episodes, I am really hoping that he makes it with the Pacers. Like I said before I think he needs to grow up(everybody knows this)he also needs to understand that he is not the main guy anymore, watching this got me to understand a bit of why he is the way he is(not making excuses for him) watching people get kill almost everyday is not a normal thing to see for anybody.

By the way has anybody think that his dad looks like C Webb?

Hoping for the best is great and all, but at the same time watching this, reading the rest of that article pasted (only partially) above, where it gets into more of the bad rap on him, and what I already knew, I just don't think this is going to work out at all, unfortunately.

In fact, I'm left thinking, "What the hell were the Pacers doing by even trying to get this kid?"

I watched all his play in summer leagues and I watched the videos. I just simply do not have computer speakers. My comments were they were showing the amazing stuff on the basketball court but it was all open dunks and layups. I simply stated I wanted to see videos of him shooting some long threes and playing some good defense on GOOD players. We all know he has handles, we all know he can get to the rim. We all know he can dunk.

I didnt know he was considered as good or better than john wall their senior season.

Did he take that much of a step back or did john wall progress that much. Its hard to imagine why a player considered to be the top in the world at his age would go well into the second round after one year of college.

Can he get to the john wall level or is he already there and just needs the chance to prove it again. Did cinci not showcase him?

He is the type of player that needs the ball in his hands and Cinci did not give him the ball as much.

Watch episode 9 starting at 1:30. He hits 2 three-pointers and a nice layup off a post move on the baseline in the first 5 minutes of the game. He then hurts his ankle.

The documentary was done well. He has as much potential to be the next JR Rider as he does to become a superstar. That's the scary part. That's also the reason he fell to the second round.

Edit:

No matter what you think of Lance, if you like HS basketball, check out episode 12. Great game... Lance hits tons of jumpers with hands in his face. It goes to double-overtime.

The dude has possible upside but I cannot believe that TPTB took a chance on this guy! After reading the full article above that naptown posted, I am scared to death of this guy. It seems like deja-vu all over again with the Artest experience. I fully expect this guy to come in and be an absolute beast for us, but have a feeling that it will all go to his head and he will regress mentally and go spazzo just like Ron did with the tv camera incident (the official start of the craziness that he put us through). I am just amazed that Bird would take a chance on him and give him a guaranteed contract so quickly after summer league. The dude couldn't even make it through a summer after getting a guaranteed job doing what he has been working his whole life for without doing something STUPID! I hope I am wrong and he turns into Paul Pierce, but I fear that we received another Artest, without the 'D'.

If this is a wake up call, then he adhers and changes his life its a good thing and nothing wrong with hoping for thisThe thing is, you look at the people he has been surrounded by, and you realize how much he has been worshipped as a celebrity, given entitlement and so forth. You also wonder about the culture and violent environment in which he grew up.

Then, you have to wonder if he is "permanently" damaged goods.

He is such a great talent, I don't blame the Pacers for wanting to take a gamble on him. But it is certainly not low risk - potentially high reward. It is definitely very high risk - potentially high reward.

If he is ever going to change, he needs something pretty drastic to change him. And I don't think a couple of years playing in Europe will do the trick. How about a couple of years in the military?

I tend to agree; I think the best (realistic) case scenario is he comes in, does pretty well on the floor, and then becomes Artest Part II with regards to distractions and self-defeating behavior until we finally trade him or otherwise rid ourselves of him for cents on the dollar.

I just hope we don't ever hitch our wagon to him, so to speak, and certainly don't give him a big, long contract.
