Derrick Brooks will announce his retirement
Posted by Mike Florio on August 11, 2010 8:59 AM ET
Long-time Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Derrick Brooks, who was cut unceremoniously in early 2009 after 14 NFL seasons, will formally announce his retirement on Wednesday, the team announced this morning.

Brooks will tell us all what we already know -- and what we sort of had assumed anyway -- at DerrickBrooks.tv.

The news will come via a video message. Then, on Thursday, Brooks will hold a press conference at the Buccaneers' facility.

Cut roughly a month after the Bucs fired coach Jon Gruden and G.M. Bruce Allen, Brooks never generated much interest from other teams. He ultimately did not play in 2009.

This should mean that Brooks, even though he didn't officially retire last year, will have to wait only four years for first consideration for the Hall of Fame

One of the best linebackers around and a class act all of the way. Unfortunately everyone gets old. Time marches on and Derrick's time is now. What a great career for a guy who plays a high impact position. Good luck in your next career Mr. Brooks.
