I got this from the Sports Rumor Mill website. Someone reported this.

"WNDE Sports Radio 1260 out of Indiana is reporting that a deal is in the works for Cleveland sending Wagner and Newble for Scot Pollard and a second Round pick. The deal could be done as early as 4pm today."

Hicks
08-10-2004, 03:09 PM
Well, well. Hadn't heard that one. Who is Newble, anyway?

Lord Helmet
08-10-2004, 03:11 PM
Yea who is Newble?

Hicks
08-10-2004, 03:12 PM
Ira Newble 6'7" 240lbs SF. We're trading a center for that and Wagner? :wtf:

Unless we have another deal brewing that involves shipping out a guard and/or forward, how does this make sense?

Ira Newble profile:
http://www.nba.com/playerfile/ira_newble/index.html?nav=page

Dajuan Wagner
http://www.nba.com/playerfile/dajuan_wagner/index.html?nav=page

Although considering who we're giving up, I don't mind giving Wagner a try.

Scott drops farther into NBA hell :(

Hicks
08-10-2004, 03:16 PM
Hoopshype's profile of him has this to say on Newble:

"Good athlete... Likes to drive to the basket... Plays with heart... A great perimeter defender... Won't score much."

Well, if he plays good perimeter D that's good.... I guess.

MSA2CF

Scot, not Scott. :p

Hicks
08-10-2004, 03:20 PM
Hoopshype on Wagner: "Can play both backcourt spots, but has a shooting guard mentality... Excellent athlete... Good scorer... Hard to stop one-on-one... Good running jumper... A little bit selfish... Must improve on the defensive end."

I suppose more offense off the bench isn't bad... I dunno.

Aw Heck
08-10-2004, 03:20 PM
I watched a few of the nationally televised Cavs games last year.

According to the announcers (I know, not saying much) Newble is a defensive specialist. And that's all I know about him. I also heard that he and Paul Silas didn't get along too well.

It doesn't hurt to have another defender. Especially if we're losing Ron. Scot may be nice to bang around with the big guys, but he really doesn't fit in here. Did he even play one minute in the ECF?

It would be good to at least gain Wagner out of the trade, I guess. But what in the hell are we gonna do with him? We already have Jackson, Jones, and Reggie at SG. Tinsley and AJ at PG...where's he gonna play?

Roy Munson

Wagner in this deal makes me wonder if Freddy is being considered to be thrown in the SAC deal.

Wagner to replace Freddy.
Newble to supplement the 3 position (defensively at least).
Peja to spread the floor and provide perimeter offense.

if these deals go down, this would have to go down as the busiest off-season ever for a team that just won 61 games.

This can't be true. Why would we leave ourselves with only Foster and Harrison in the middle and add an undersized SG and another SF? This makes no sense.

Peck
08-10-2004, 03:23 PM
The day the season ended I would have jumped on this trade so fast. Heck, I would have offered to buy Pollard a first class ticket to Cleveland.

But now, I just don't see how this makes sense.

I would have loved to get Wagner, I think he would have been the perfect third guard on our team. He could have come off of the bench for either Reggie or Jamaal. But now isn't he just glut?

We all know Reggie is still going to start & that means that Jackson will be spelling him.

Jamaal is going to start & sure Wagner could come in for him but then why the hell did we sign Johnson for so long? For that matter why did we get Gill?

Newble is a nice bench player as well, 10th or 11th man with no problem.

But, & God help me for saying this because I feel dirty, we keep getting smaller & smaller.

Even if the Artest trade doesn't go down I just don't see how we can match up with Shaq or an even bigger stronger Detroit.

This is a good trade. Hell, two months ago this would have been a great trade. But right now, unless there is something else out there brewing, I don't see the point of this trade.

BTW, I think Wagner could be a star if given the right opprotunity.

Hmmm....part of a multi-team trade? Would then then be sent to Golden State for Dampier?

Wagner is a bit more interesting to them then Pollard I would guess.

Roy Munson
08-10-2004, 03:26 PM
Maybe they are getting Wagner and Newble to sweeten the deal for Peja.

could it be Artest-Wagner for Peja-???

or Artest-Newble for Peja-???

It would probably have to be Peja-and-something-else to make the money match.

Unclebuck
08-10-2004, 03:29 PM
Newble is an excellent defender, if the Pacers trade Artest I could see them wanting Newble as a guy who could help defend the really good shooting guards and some small forwards.

But if the pacers trade Pollard as Peck said they better get a center somehow from somewhere. A center who can play 15 minutes per game and maybe 25 vs Shaq.

I agree with Peck on this as a trade goes the Pacers get the better of this, but what type of team are we becoming.

I believe we have 24hours to trade them, otherwise the 60 days takes effect. It also could be one big trade, thus avoiding this whole situation.

Putting on my sarcastic hat: good to see that the Pacers are finally rebuilding.

How much do Newble and Wagner make combined? I know it has to be close to Pollard, but it could be close to like 1 mil less... if that's the case maybe this is partially a cost-cutting move... that extra million wouldn't help increase our MLE, but it could increase the bottom line if the Simons weren't willing to use ALL of the MLE before because of where it would put us as a total.

I agree that if this is true there is a huge possibility of it being a 3 or 4 team deal.

If hoopshype is accurate, if we trade Scot for Wagner/Newble, we're saving a little over $400k.

I mean I agree that if this happens I heavily suggests another move, but where do you get 4 team deals for Peja and Dampier?

I'm just speculating, which is all any of this is, but if the Pacers trade Pollard away they are WAY to thin up front, and they have no need for Wagner and Newble other than try use them to acquire another player.

I also think that SAC wants more than Artest if they trade away Peja. Who knows? Maybe SAC ends up with Dampier and the Pacers end up with Ostertag (yuk! I don't think DWLB would do that).

But really, I just made that comment as a joke...I should have put one of those smiley-faces at the end of my post, but they don't work for me.

If Peja is going to be traded to Indiana, then Wagner is the type of player the Kings could use. Just an idea.

Also, it's just a gut feeling, but I think this may signify Dampier is on his way.

I'm very curious to see how this shakes out.

Actually, it is legal. Why wouldn't it be?

Just have to sign Dampier to whatever Wagner is making. It has already been determined that Artest and Jones are about = to Peja money wise, and the Pollard for Wagner and Newble works too.

What is wrong with it?

Oddly enough, I was thinking last night about what aquire-able defensive stopper swingmen were out there, and Ira Newble was the first to come to mind. Huh.

Makes losing Artest's defensive presence a little easier to bear, since we'll have a 2/3 who can simmer down the Tmacs and Pierces when they get hot. I like him, and Wagner is a huge talent. But I gotta agree with those who say this smells strongly of Dampier.

Cavaliers waive Steven Hunter
In a shocking move...well let me rephrase that...in a somewhat expected move, Cavaliers General Manager Jim Paxson announced today that the team has waived center Steven Hunter.

Hunter was the 15th overall pick by the Orlando Magic in the 2001 NBA draft. Cleveland acquired Hunter along with Drew Gooden and Anderson Verejao from the Magic on July 23 in exchange for Tony Battie and two future second-round picks.

If this deal goes through, do it. Newble's a great utility player. He won't care if he plays 15-20 mpg and he plays with a lot of guts.

From what I understand from living up here in Cavs country, Newble and Silas aren't exactly best of friends. Early in the year Silas benched Miles and Newble for condruct detrimental (similar to Ron's benching). Miles was soon gone and I can see how Silas would want Newble gone as well. He and Silas don't see eye to eye.

As for Wagner, he's kind of the odd man out in Cleveland kind of like Freddy is in an odd position here. Talented, just stuck behind alot of other talented people.

I signed up at SportsRumorMill.com (where this rumor came from) to question the validity of it.

The story gets more clear. After I suggested it was false, the original starter of the thread claiming this trade shed some light:

I heard this on wtam 1100 out of cleveland and they were reporting that the radio station out of indiana was reporting this. i dont go around making **** up i was the first one to post on the mill that winslow had signed today so dont give me that ****.

So now it's a Cleveland station saying it, but oddly THEY say they heard it here. Weird.

It's still probably false, but I found that interesting so I'm passing it along.

Hicks
08-11-2004, 12:04 PM
Wha? It is? *runs off to RealGM*

So it is. Although the guy said Chris Ford, not Chad Ford. I dunno. I'd like to believe the guy, but until I hear it from more than just one random stooge on RealGM, I'm gonna guess it's false.

I hope it's true though.

Reading Cavs boards, there's a moderator on one of them who says he's found out (though he doesn't say how) that this deal might be waiting for what happens to Dampier. Another one speculates further to say that this hinges on if we get Dampier or not. If we do, this trade just might happen, if not, then unlikely.

Chalk up another reason I hope this trade happens.

"Mutombo, who returned from a family vacation to the south of France Tuesday, is unsure he wants to play for the rebuilding Bulls but won't retire. He planned to speak to his agent David Falk last night about their strategy. Falk likely will try to force a trade to the Rockets."

Well, it doesn't get much bigger than Mutombo backing up Yao Ming.

I think the possible acquisitions of Peja and Newble would be terrific.

I have it on good authority the triumvirate of O'Neal, Peja, and Newble would be devastating.

I hooked them up with each other on "NBA Street" (PS2) and they have been kicking the snot out of all takers.

IF thats the case then all we need is to get Rafer Alston. Because Rafer, Jermaine and Reggie have been tearing up my NBA Street 2.

Or the PAcers could sign me because my created player (created in my likeness) plus Jermaine and Reggie are even better. In fact I'm the highest rated player in the league...

Actually, it is legal. Why wouldn't it be?

Just have to sign Dampier to whatever Wagner is making. It has already been determined that Artest and Jones are about = to Peja money wise, and the Pollard for Wagner and Newble works too.

What is wrong with it?

...5 pages later...(sorry, just saw this)

What's wrong is that Wagner is still on his rookie deal, IOW $2.6M. If Dampier wanted half the MLE, we could sign him outright (along with just about everyone else in the league.)

Ok, how about what Wagner and Croshere make then? (have to add someone there)

Oddly enough I have rethought this and think Sac is not in the equation at all (if any of this is real). Instead of keeping Newble we may be just passing him on to GS. They are in need of a SF to back of Mike D. So damp could be signed for what Pollard is making now, ship Pollard to Cleveland and GS gets Wagner and Newble.

Plus with this we keep Artest and JB.

I don't know if any of you remember Bird's charity game at MSA "Larry's Game" in the mid-late 80's (87 or 88?), but Chuck threw down an unbelievable (especially for Chuck) dunk during the game (I can't remember if there was more than one "Larry's Game" or not.).

Actually a couple weeks ago , I was told Desanga Diop and Dujuan Wagner was the offer for Pollard.

First I've heard of Newble tho. Checking contract Newble is signed for 4 years 12.3 mil , while Wagner is signed 2 yrs 6 mil tho 2nd yr at 3.4 is team option.

The addition of Newble does seem to point to Artest/Stojakovic being more realistic.

Have been told Mullin and Bird talked within last 3 days about Dampier tho. In someways the Wagner/Diop rumor would make more sense if its a 3way w/ Warriors tho.

Still not sure how legit Cavs /Pacer one is tho , on being a near deal.

Still don't see Mullin taking Croshere tho .

Wagner did avg 13.4 ppg 2 years ago , so Warriors may have real intrest in him behind Jason Richardson (a restricted free agent next season. By the way Richardson agent is also Dampier and Stephen Jackson's.

Actually a couple weeks ago , I was told Desanga Diop and Dujuan Wagner was the offer for Pollard.

I don't get that trade from the Cavs standpoint at all.

Yeah, when did Pollard become such a hot commodity? I wouldn't complain if it happened, though.

I think the Cavs are down on Diop for some reason. So trading two guys they don't really want/need for another big they might be interested in makes some sense. Dunno.

Reason Cavs are after Pollard is twofold.
1, they traded Tony Battie to Magic for Drew Gooden to replace Boozer , Battie was their main back up center

2. Diop , is still very raw rather than be left with no legit backup for injury prone Ilguaskis , they are after a vet Pollard

Figuring they are in decent shape to make playoffs they just want Pollard for 15-20 minutes a night, to board ,set picks, and bang on defense.

As I said not sure how close to a deal it is tho. Newble is a recent development in talks.

OK check this out!

I had to use Dale Davis at 9M in replace of Dampier so the +/- numbers won't be right but the money should make the deal work, just sub Dampier for Davis.

Stojakovic's numbers are way off on REAL GM as well
Indiana trades: C Scot Pollard (1.7 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 0.2 apg in 11.1 minutes)
SF Jonathan Bender (7.0 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 0.4 apg in 12.9 minutes)
SF Ron Artest (18.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 3.7 apg in 37.2 minutes)
Indiana receives: C Dale Davis (4.4 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.0 apg in 22.1 minutes)
C Peja Stojakovic (4.4 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.0 apg in 22.1 minutes)
Change in team outlook: -22.6 ppg, -4.7 rpg, and -3.3 apg.

Golden State trades: C Dale Davis (4.4 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.0 apg in 22.1 minutes)
Golden State receives: SF Jonathan Bender (7.0 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 0.4 apg in 21 games)
PG Bobby Jackson (13.8 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.1 apg in 50 games)
Change in team outlook: +16.4 ppg, +0.2 rpg, and +1.5 apg.

Sacramento trades: C Peja Stojakovic (4.4 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.0 apg in 22.1 minutes)
PG Bobby Jackson (13.8 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.1 apg in 23.7 minutes)
Sacramento receives: C Scot Pollard (1.7 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 0.2 apg in 61 games)
SF Ron Artest (18.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 3.7 apg in 73 games)
Change in team outlook: +6.2 ppg, +4.5 rpg, and +1.8 apg.

I don't think you have to give GS Bobby Jackson. They'd just take Bender.

Dampier would sign for 8 mil or less, I think.

If Sactown will take Pollard and give up Bobby Jackson, send Jax to the Pacers!

But I do not think Sacramento would let go of Jackson or take Scot Pollard - since they recently invested in Greg Ostertag.

If we're trading Bender, I still like Bender/Pollard for Damp/Cliffy. Or maybe Pollard for Newble and Wagner, then Bender/Wagner/Newble for Damp/Cliff.

That's actually a pretty good trade for GS. A free agent and an ending salary for three rotation players, two of whom have lots of potential.

Golden State re-signed Cheaney today. I see three scenarios with this:

1. They're not trading Damp and getting a swing player in return (or not doing a S&T with him at all).

2. Trading a swing player they already have - with or without Dampier

3. Are worried about Pieturs' shoulder injury from summer league.

As the GSW roster is now, there's Richardson, Dunleavy, Pietrus, and Cheaney at the 2 and 3 positions.

Good point. Signing Cheaney makes it less likely GS is looking to add players in a Dampier deal.
