Butler radio broadcasts moving to 1070 AM

Capitalizing on its Final Four run, Butler is moving to Indianapolis’ largest all-sports radio station.

Butler men’s basketball games will be heard on WFNI, 1070-AM, beginning this coming season, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

An announcement is planned for Tuesday afternoon at Butler’s Hinkle Fieldhouse. Terms of the agreement were not available Monday.

Known as ‘1070 The Fan,’ WFNI is a 50,000-watt station during the day, 10,000-watt at night, with six night-time towers.

Butler broadcasts had been on WXNT, 1430-AM. WXNT is a 5,000-watt station with two night-time towers.

The Bulldogs were the 2010 national runner-up, falling to Duke in the title game, and saw sophomore forward Gordon Hayward, a Brownsburg native, picked ninth in Thursday’s NBA draft.

Butler likely will not face any broadcasts conflicts.

The Indiana Pacers are on WIBC 93.1 FM, 1070’s sister station, a move announced this past week by Emmis Communications, which owns the two stations. The Colts are on 93.1 FM and 1070 AM, but Butler rarely, if ever, goes head-to-head with the Colts.

WFNI also is the flagship station of the IndyCar Series and the Indianapolis 500.
