The length of the deal and financial terms were not immediately available.

“It’s nice to get it done,’’ team president Bill Polian said today. “He could have played on the (restricted) tender or the reduced tender, but we said all along our goal was to get him under a long-term contract and we have.’’

Bethea had been issued a one-year, $2.521 million tender as a restricted free agent. He didn’t sign the tender, which kept him from participating in the Colts’ organized team activities or three-day minicamp.

A sixth-round pick in 2006, Bethea has been a mainstay in the secondary. He has started 68 games, including the playoffs, and was named to his second Pro Bowl in 2009.

One of the most underrated Safeties in the league the past few seasons.

At this point, losing him hurts us far more than losing Bob Sanders.
