I don't have time to participate but this is going to be fun to watch.

I'm a big fan of DD's team, so far. Although Hick's pickup of Bellamy was nice.

Burnzone also has a nice team so far.

:irked: :disappointed:

As everyone drafts in this round I will add their team salary totals by the players name in bold thru 5 rounds. At the end of this round I will post matchups just to give everyone an idea who they would face if the draft ended at the end of the this round (halfway). At least it might give us all something to talk about.

That would be great. Since I should have the #1 seed at the end of the round, I look forward to seeing whose butt I will be kicking first.:beat:

I still feel we need an impartial multi game matchup in order to keep someone from having a one game wonder against me.:swordfight:

I've never used the What if sports site to play any games before so I'm kindda relying on the kindness of others to steer this in the right direction.

If you guys that have been there before think that a best of 3 series is do-able, I'll go along.

It takes about 5 seconds to run a game, so we can be pretty open about how many games we want in a series.

Would best of 7 per round be best then?

I've ran some sims on there in the past and I think best of 7 is the way to go. It only takes about 5 seconds to sim a game and if you only sim one or two games sometimes you get goofy results but with the best of 7 usually the better team wins. Just my :twocents:

I would vote for a 7 game series because all you would have to do is run the sim, then hit the back button and run it again till you get the result of a 5 game series, just make sure you switch the home/visitor designations for the appropriate games. It does go extreamly fast and in the future we could consider having pool play because the games are pretty easy to sim.

One thing that was not mentioned...after the draft we will all have to set our starters so whoever does the business at WhatIf Sports will know how to set our teams for the tourney.

I was just wondering how and who is going to run the sims on WhatIf Sports, because I would suggest running 4 series a day by one person ie. Jose, Sycamore, myself or whoever has some experience running "sim-matchup" and put the results on a new thread.

Again...just my :twocents:.
Ok, I agree with Dipper on 7 games

You may want to re-add that. I get $65,320,141 when I do.

I agree that best of 7 is the way to go. I have a practice team made up of my starters and a filler and I have been running games against other made up teams on the site. I was able to win a couple of games against a team made up of Jordan Wilt, Kareem, Magic, and a few other all worlds (2000-01 Ageless CagersII). Obviously I lost more than I won, as it should have been.

I would strongly encourage everyone involved to get familiar with the site and the process. That way, everyone can run the games and take part. It isn't hard and is pretty fun.

No, you do not have to pay $10. All you have to do is go to "sim matchup" at the bottom of the page of Whatifsports.com to put your team together. When you go to sim a matchup and chose a home or visiting team click the "my favorite team" option and click on "build my NBA team" . Happy selecting!

I was just wondering if you knew what seasons that you wanted to use for the players that you have chosen thus far, so we can come up with some preliminary seeding at the end of this round.

How do you do it? Do i have to pay the ten dollars to join a league? How do you do a game?

makin sure this is seen. (talkin about whatif)

No, you do not have to pay $10. All you have to do is go to "sim matchup" at the bottom of the page of Whatifsports.com to put your team together. When you go to sim a matchup and chose a home or visiting team click the "my favorite team" option and click on "build my NBA team" . Happy selecting!

Umm. how do you do it if you only have five players?

Just fill your roster with temp. players. Just do it to get the hang of running games. You can delete the team and rebuild once you have your "real" team.

Though I agree on the "best of 7" formula, I am thoroughly opposed to the "money-seeding".

You can simply not deliver proof that "more expensive" teams are better then "cheaper" teams, not only do years and money value influence the matter, also the "shining" of the star depending on the year of choice (just before or just after they signed a new contract).

Several players (a lot) have their best season before they get their big payday, this would mean that a "cheaper" team is stronger.
In years gone by, players made different kind of money (no CBA) and so forth.

Finally despite that, a simple lottery would do the same for seeding as it did for the draft.

Final finally (:D) why not play a "full competition" of each team playing against all the others?
It's not like playing a game takes 2 days, 5 seconds tops on my connection including a play by play creation.

Each team playing 15 matches with then the best 8 playing a playof if you want is far more interesting, and let's face it, we're bored to death anyway :D
(assuming we have 16 players in this game, to lazy to look it up :) )

I am 100% sure that the money seeding is of the same valkue as a lottery and must admit that I have more respect for lottery results in that case, not to insult anyone, I just don't like the idea of making the value of the players create the seeding.

able, someone else pointed this out to you before: These are not the salaries they were actually paid. This is totally different dollars being used. It's just amounts assigned to their stats in this case; has nothing to do with what they actually made at the time. Unless you think Wilt Chamberlaine made 30million a year in the 60s

besides that for later players real salaries are used.

As stated above, the players with the most dominate stats for a season are given the largest "made up" salary numbers.

Since that is the case the team with the largest "made up" team salary should be the most dominate in our tourney.

That's why we are seeding accordingly.

Hey able...

I'm not suggesting a change for this game, but for future reference when/If we do this again...I would sugest pool type play to accomplish the tourney.

Heres how...
Two pools of 8 teams...(I would still use the WhatIf Sports Salary system to balance the pools.)
Every team plays every other team in their pool once.
After the 7 games...Select the top 4 teams in each pool for a best of 3, 5 or 7 tourney.
Pool A on one side of the Bracket, pool B on the other.
Play to a Championship

Example:
Pool A------------------------------Pool B

Sycamore Ken------------------I Love the Pacers
Louisville Lip--------------------BurnZone
Rim Bender---------------------Roaming Gnome
Pig Nash-------------------------Jose Slaughter
MSA2CF--------------------------Magic Rat
Joel------------------------------Dipperdunk
able------------------------------SkipperZ
Hicks-----------------------------Hoop

Using the round 5 salary numbers...Pool A is only $1.4M greater then pool B so for the sake of argument...Equal.

I would agree...For WhatIf Sports (WIS), they have a Salary cap of $42M. What I like better about our game is that once a player is gone..He is gone for good!! In WIS you can have have multiple Chamberlains and Barkleys because you can use different years. I don't like that at all. More creativity when you have to get a totally different guy when someone goes off the board!

Sycamore Ken mentioned this before, but it is time to say it again...If you are not familiar with WhatIf Sports and the "Sim Matchup" mode...You need to go over there and experiment because everyone is going to have to set up their own team.

You are only allowed to create one team at a time making it impossible for one or two guys to set up the whole league, so everyone will have to know how to set up their team when the time comes.

It is pretty strait forward but here is a quick overview if needed:

Go to http://www.whatifsports.com/locker/default.asp and click on "sim matchup" at the bottom of the page.

Click NBA

You will be asked for a Home and a Visiting team. To the right of each it says "My Favorite Teams". Click one of the Favorite Teams!

Under NBA there will be an option to "Build My NBA Team" Click This!

A grid will come up with spots for 4 guards, 4 forwards, and 2 centers. Click on any one to start making your team. The only thing that may confuse some is that if you click Guard...You have to put in a guard, not a forward that is commonly mistaken for a guard like Dominique Wilkins.

After you finish all 10 positions you will be asked to name your team. After you enter a name, the grid will come back up empty with a message saying you can only have one created team at a time.

Go to the bottom of the Screen and click "SimMatchup" and it will take you back to where you chose NBA. When you get back to the screen where you select Home/Visitor go back to "My Favorite Teams" and choose what you named your team.

Click the Home/Visitor team that is going to be the opponent of your squad. You can search for any actual team, or test your squad against some of the elite user created teams of What If Sports by changing sort results by to "winning percentage" and changing the teams option to "User Created".

Set your lineups and away you go!

So, does anyone feel extreamly confident with their team and the way it is going? I know the original list of 10 guys that I had were all but gone after I made the first pick. Now it feels like I am piecing this group together more then what I had for the original blueprint.

I have a list of my top 200 guys on paper all ranked in 11 different catagories. I'm pretty confident.

Up to date except, I Love The Pacers and Jose Slaughter have not picked their season years.

I like seeing see the order of the draft, so hope i got it all right. This is the most interesting part to me, where players get picked. The salaries seem to reflect the over all careers more than single season numbers.

OK, folks. I have looked at basketball-reference.com and found a players' statistics. I looked him up at whatifsports.com's database and it has him, but not the "good years," the years I would be using him for. Does that mean those are the only years it will let me have, basically saying those "good years" didn't exist and cannot be used for the game?

Yes, this is influential in my selection, so I'd like to hear from some people about it before I pick. The quicker it gets answered, the quicker I pick.

No, because it shows me the correct player, and some of his years, but not the years that I want to use him. I am assuming those years won't be able to be used unless otherwise told.

Yep, if he played...He is on WIS...As MagicRat said you might want to try looking for him in a different position. Like one guy that I am waiting to draft is commonly mistaken for a SG, but he is listed as a PG.

For instance..Tracy McGrady has some years under SF but if you look up TMac under Guard...His SF stats will just be missing!

Okay, I'll have to give you an example.

I typed in under Last Name: Carey

R. Carey PF 1908-09
D. Carey PG 1992-93
D. Carey PG 1993-94
D. Carey PG 1994-95
D. Carey PG 1995-96
C. Carey SG 1980-81

I was looking for Drew Carey. He played a few years more than it shows, more than four. The seasons excluded were his best, the ones I want to use.

But how did you get there? If it is through the "Build your own team" section, where you have to click the [Fill In] next to a position? or is it through the SimLeagues section, where you have an "any position" option?

Thanks for offering, but I don't know how you could help, exactly.

I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't be able to use the player's "good years" because if it's missing from their database, it's obviously not there, therefore unusable.

But I don't want to find out later on that if I had drafted him, I would have been able to use those years somehow.

Any last advice, anyone? If not, I'll just forget him.

My :twocents:
Well, if you can't find it on WIS in simleague, or build you NBA team....I'd say just forget about him because if you can't find him....I doubt I or anyone else would be able to.

Or, ask Jose if you can draft both just in case!

Since you're so secretive about your pick:ninja:, I was just trying to think of any other ways somebody could be in the database.

I would hope you weren't looking for Chris Jackson.....:p

Both as in the guy I'm referring to and a "real" pick?

Jose Slaughter

The last pick was by Able, made 03:29:33 17 Aug 2004

That was nearly 18 hours ago.

I sent a PM to I love the Pacers, as of 9:20 he is on the clock & will have until 9:20 AM Wednesday to make his pick.

Joel is now on deck & MSA2CF will have to make his pick whenever he gets a chance.

Jose, have you read the last several posts explaining my perdicament? Any suggestions?

Jose Slaughter
08-17-2004, 10:33 PM
Yes I have.

If the stats are not in the data base we can not use them.

Seems pretty cut & dried to me.

I think you will need to find a player who's numbers are available in their system.

Clark Kellogg - 82-83, rookie season.

BTW, Gnome, Alvin Robertson was a SF in the years he was chosen.

This was another tough pick, and I am sure the guy I was debating between (between Clark/him) will be chosen by the time my next pick comes up. I'll give you a hint: There's a former Detroit Lion who shares the same last name as him.

Sorry about that. I got mixed up and was rushed for time when I made that pick. So now it is Burnzone, Lip, then me. Got it.

Now I have a little more time to think that pick over.

Here I thought that you guys banned me. ;)

If you need a more solid host, I can probably help you out. I have a dedicated server that is barely touching the surface of what it can handle.

Thanks for the offer, but able IS a solid host. This is very out of the ordinary. He's been a terrific host.

I learned that some people have limited or no PC access during the day.

I know this slows down the game a great deal but we just have to live with it.

I must be getting better at drafting, some of the guys I have on my short list are being taken just ahead of my pick.

If I had had time to do my research I doubt I would have taklen Magic so early. Looks like he might be coming off the bench for me.

I have a question for the What if Sports vets.

I was on lastnight, in the Sims Matchup section.

I created my own team & was playing against the Bulls 71 win team of a few years back.

For some reason it kept giving one or two of my starting players 2 minutes. I ran maybe 9 or 10 games & switched the line ups around every couple games but it would still do the same thing.

What's up with that?

One more thing.

It would be very helpful to Roaming Gnome if we could start posting the salaries for our picks too.

I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner. I'm sure it will save him a lot of time having to coming up with all those salaries & then adding up to boot.

Thanks

I just hope it's enough to get me into the playoffs.

I'm pretty sure it'll change it automatically if you put the players in the wrong positions. Like if i try to start Walt Frazier at SG it'll take him out pretty fast.-

About how WIS does the substitution patterns is foreign to me...the only thing that I can speculate is that it has to do with matchups. When I played against the 72-10 Bulls my starter would get major mins, like all 48, but when I took my squad against a couple other teams...the mins. would be split up a little more evenly. Against some other teams, my backup would be like yours...Getting major mins like 42!

As for everyone adding their saleries...It isn't necessary if someone isn't quite familiar with the sim-league side of WIS.

With the 98th pick, I will select George Mikan from the 51-52 season.

There was the guy I was referring to in my earlier posts, Jose, Gnome, and Magic. He played from 1949-1956, but whatifsports.com only has his seasons 51-52, 52-53, 53-54, and 55-56.

I'm not tryning to get on anyones' nerves or anything Jose, but why no trades?

I mean if we want to trade I don't see why not.

Its your game though so do as you please, and it is good even without trades, but I, even though I don't think i have anyone to trade, would love to have a chance to trade if I needed it.

That's sorta pathetic. Oh well...Nothing's perfect.

Actually, I have heard in the past before I even knew of WIS that the stats of the first two years of the NBA (49-50 and 50-51) were very inconsistant. I have found this out in looking for information on the original Fort Wayne Pistons and George Yardley (their superstar of the time). It is often said that he had incredible stats before 51-52 but were often incomplete or inaccurate.

I've run sim games with my starters and probable picks I might make as well. There were a couple of games where Kareem or another starter had the same thing happen. It didn't seem logical, thus the reason I suggested all matchups be more than one game. 9 times out of 10 the lineup was consistant it seemed.

The site does not always switch to the best players all of the time, so run your guys in a variety of ways in order to see which is the most productive.

Finally, I am one that cannot get on during the day. I will get home and make my picks as soon as I can, and I do check in before going to work.

To make your sim-matchup team work, you have to draft:
4 Guards
4 Forwards
2 Centers

But when you set your line ups, you can play anyone that you have drafted anywhere.

As far as the list goes, I try to post one on each page. I was gonna do it at the top but like Pig Nash mentioned, everytime I make an edit it list it as part of the post. So far they have not been able to alter that feature so I'm working around it.
