Okay, the pairings have been released, and game times are forthcoming...

http://www.ncaa.com/brackets/basketball/men/

It looks like Notre Dame plays at 12:25ET Thursday. Butler plays at approximately 4:55ET Thursday. Purdue plays at approximately 2:30ET Friday.

I don't understand how Kansas and Kentucky got paired with the top 2 2-seeds.

And Duke got the easiest path imaginable.

I don't understand how Kansas and Kentucky got paired with the top 2 2-seeds.

the only thing I can think of, is the committee emphasized location more than strength in doling out the regions.

So for example, if OSU was the best #2 seed, its "reward" wasn't playing the weakest #1 (Duke), but playing closer to home (Milwaukee).

Also agreed that the South is the weakest bracket.

Mike and Mike had the committee head Dan Guerrero on this morning and he was asked about placing West Virginia and Ohio State (the two best 2 seeds) in the same region as Kansas and Kentucky (the two best 1 seeds). Guerrero said essentially, yes, geography played a great role in the process so that West Virginia and Ohio State ended up closer to home in the early rounds and regional sites.

I'm in on the Pick'em. I still haven't filled my bracket out, but I've been thinking Syracuse for most of the season. I think, despite the injury, I'm still going to go that way. Then I have to decide how far I think the Temple/Cornell winner is going to go, as I had pegged both of those teams as Sweet 16-caliber, and now they're playing each other in the first round.

Butler looked vulnerable to the press in the second half even though it didn't hurt them... this time. It yielded a couple of turnovers, some confusion, and some lucky bounces that probably should've been turnovers.

I'd be working on the press before Saturday if I was Butler. Murray State has speed so you'd think they could use it effectively.

As disciplined as Butler looked it surprised me to see them not looker smoother against the press...

Anyone that's followed Butler closely this year know if that was a fluke or an Achilles heel that was exposed?

Anyone that's followed Butler closely this year know if that was a fluke or an Achilles heel that was exposed? It's not something I think they're overly concerned about. UTEP was supposed to beat them with their big, athletic frontcourt because Butler didn't have the size or athletic ability to match up with them.

So much for that theory. Butler does what Butler does. Other teams have to figure them out and stop them to win. Butler is a very well coached team, very high B-ball IQ, very patient ............... very good.

LOL... Nope I'm not the Butler hater. I'd like to see them in Indy come Final Four time. That would be awesome.

I haven't had a chance to watch much college ball this year but know Butler is typically fundamentally sound and so was a little surprised to see the press rattle them.

What crossed my mind was, since they are known to be so sound, maybe they haven't seen much of the press this year with teams figuring they'd chew it up and so weren't 'game ready' for it when someone pulled it out at the end of the season here in tournament time. Hence the question whether teams have pressed Butler much this year ...or maybe the confusion was just a fluke...

It might be good that UTEP pulled it out in a tournament game just so Butler is a little more ready for the next time they see it deeper in the tournament. I gotta believe the Racers will be prepared to use it... and not wait until they are 15 points down.

I have seen all of the Butler games this year, and they have rarely seen a full-court press. It did cause them some problems in their early season losses, and I agree that they looked awkward against it, even though it didn't lead to many turnovers, in the UTEP game. In the Horizon league they almost never had a team pressure the ball up the court, because Butler was more athletic than almost all of those teams and pressure generally led to easy lay-ups.

All of that said, I am not really worried about it too much with Murray State. Murray state has a bunch of quick players, but I don't think that they have the length to bother Butler. Part of the issue with UTEP was that those guys were athletic and taller at every position.

Assuming that Butler wins tomorrow, I do think this is something that they will see and need to work on. I haven't seen Syracuse play this year, but I don't think that they are really a pressing team, so maybe this isn't so much of an issue.

'Cuse doesn't press. They get back into Boeheim's 2-3 zone and rely on their length and superior athleticism to contest shots and rebound.

i watched the first half of Duke Cal on MMOD replay, and this is gonna be a tough matchup for PU. Duke seems to play OK defense, but it was not that easy to tell, since Cal took a bunch of stupid shots. Zubek is a big slow oaf out there.

But when Duke is on the offensive end, is where it will be tough.

The starters are

Zubek C 7'2"
Thomas PF 6'8" (big)
Singler SF 6'8" (skinny)
Scheyer SG 6'5"
Smith PG 6'2"

Then, two 6'10" guys of the bench (Plumlees)

So what is the matchup?

Zubek - JJ
Thomas-Kramer
Singler-Grant
Scheyer-Moore
Smith-Jackson

seems to make the most sense, but do you want to waste Kramer on Thomas, who is not an offensive threat? If not, can Grant handle a PF on D? I'm not sure. Maybe Byrd gets a lot of burn at the 4 guarding Thomas, Kramer plays Singler at the 3 and Grant and Moore play the 1 and 2?

I hate the NCAA seeding system. I am not a Michigan State fan, but chew on this. They secured a top 5 seed, played two tough games to get to the sweet 16, and lost Lucas. Their reward? They get to travel farther than the lower seeded team they are playing to a building where that lower seeded team plays their conference tournament in front of a crowd that is familiar with and rooting for them. I know that teams deal with this stuff every year but sheesh. Talk about a perfect storm against MSU.

MSU started out trying to run and push the tempo. That's what every team tries to do against Butler. Now, Butler has them slowing it down. No team, no matter who they are or want style they play is able to play their game against Butler. Butler always gets them out of their comfort zone.

Butler's defense has held every team in the NCAA tournament under 60 points and are on pace to do it again.

I wouldn't advocate going 10+ minutes without a field goal against Duke or West Virginia. Otherwise top shelf effort from Butler, especially on the defensive end.

I'm in the spirit of the moment. Temporary logo change for PD!

I never thought I would see Butler make it to the National Title game. Great to see this and it takes away some of the sting of the Colts Super Bowl loss for me.

Colts were in the SuperBowl? Lol Just kidding.

I'm hoping that Butler's success and most likely another season of the Fever doing well will help this city return to being a basketball town again, Colts and HS football have dominated the scene for too long now, and people just don't seem to have the same passion for basketball on any level until recently of course.
