Shaq wants stars to dunk

By TOM WITHERS, AP Sports Writer

CLEVELAND (AP)—Shaquille O’Neal(notes) has a plan to save the NBA’s All-Star dunk contest: Bring back the superstars and do it for devastated Haiti.

Following Tuesday night’s win over Toronto, O’Neal was asked if he would like to see teammate LeBron James(notes) participate in this year’s event. That’s when he offered his idea. He would like to see former dunk champion Vince Carter(notes), Kobe Bryant(notes) and others take part along with James.

“As his manager, I will only allow ‘Bron to do the dunk contest if Vince Carter comes back out,” O’Neal said. “If Kobe comes back out and if another big name comes back out. If we could get a big prize and have half of the money go to the people of Haiti and the other half to the winner.

“The guys that are in it, no disrespect to them, but there won’t really be any competition for LeBron. I want to see Kobe. I want to see Vince and I will allow my client to enter.”

Could he make it happen?

“I’m saying it now,” O’Neal said. “So tweet it. Facebook it. E-mail it and hopefully it gets out. Vince, we’re calling you out. Kobe, we’re calling you out. We’re calling everybody out. If those guys step up in the dunk contest, then I will allow my client to step up.”

James has decided to skip next month’s event in Dallas after originally saying he would participate.

This seems pretty interesting to me and it would be for a good cause !

That would be legendary. It would revive a (in my opinion) meaningless competition, plus the whole good cause thing.

Half goes to the winner? Don't those guys make enough money? How about sending ALL of the earnings to Haiti, Shaq?

Half to the winner, only to say afterward he's donating his half to Haiti as well. Then we shall declare the winner the exalted, athletic, generous one that he is ...

It would make sense..The i bet if the other star players agreed it would work out. Lebron and Kobe don't want to enter it and lose to the bench players that are in it every year. I know Howard has helped a little bit, but there's something not that impressive about having the best center in the league win a dunk contest...I doubt it would ever happen though, the days of seeing a contest like Wilkins vs Jordan may be behind us

Great idea for a great cause... the dunk contest needs the stars in it again to reignite fan interest in the contest.

If everyone could pull together like this for a domestic cause, things in this country, THE COUNTRY WE LIVE IN, might actually start to improve here. How about donating the money to a cause in Dallas, to help that community's homeless or some other worthy on-going cause?

Nate Robinson, Gerald Wallace and Shannon Brown are set for the Dunk Contest. It's getting worse every year...Shaq said what the fans feel and the idea of donating the money is awesome!
It's probably not gonna happen, though, but I like the fact that Shaq's calling them out and speaking what everybody thinks!
