After experiencing some discomfort during his recently-accelerated rehabilitation program, Clippers’ forward Blake Griffin was examined Tuesday afternoon by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.

As a result of that examination, it has been determined that the healing in his left patella area has not improved to the expected required level. Griffin will undergo a surgical procedure in the near future, with a recovery prognosis of four to six months. Team personnel will be made available to the media. Further details will be made available as events develop.

Hurts the Clips a ton, who are flirting with .500

So if Greg Oden is the new Sam Bowie, I guess this news would make Blake Griffin the new Danny Manning (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Manning#Professional_career)...

so...this makes two of the last three #1 picks, both physical big men, neither one able to play a single game the year he was drafted.

Eventually, I would hope someone would have the common sense to point a finger at AAU and all the extra mileage young bigs put on their knees, in addition to weight training earlier ages every year....but im sure this will be written off as another coincidence.

I forget....did Griffin even play this season ( during Summer League or anything ) prior to getting this injury?

or

Did he have this injury all along after he got drafted?

He was really starting to look better and it appeared he would be ready soon so this came as a surprise.

Man that's unfortunate. Hope he has a successful surgery and healthy recovery.

Just goes to show that even a #1 pick doesn't guarantee anything.

How do you know if he was starting to look better? The only time you see him is in a suit behind the Clippers bench?

June 24, 2009 Bill Simmons writes an open letter to Blake Griffin on the eve of the 2009 draft.

Eerie and scary. Just gonna put the ending

Again, I would start running right now. But if you choose to stay, I have an idea: Trek into the desert like Jim Morrison did in "The Doors," bring Gordon with you, drop some acid and try to connect with a Native American shaman. Or you could fly to Buffalo with Baron and Gordon, find some sacred ground and make some atonements. Maybe you could even bring a white buffalo with you. Just make sure you do something. This is bigger than you. And us.

Good luck breaking the Curse of the Sacred Buffalo.

I can't believe I missed that Simmons piece when it was written. That's Simmons at his best right there.

My favorite line: Nobody turns a dollar into three quarters like Elgin Baylor.

Simmons is going to have a field day with this. I'm not sure AAU has so much to do with this. Sure, the kids play more organized games, and they do lift weights more often and earlier. But surely players like Bird, Jordan, Hakeem put just as many hours in with a ball and a hoop, and also, they didn't have access to nearly as much preventative medicine, advanced trainers, and probably played on surfaces like dirt/clay/asphalt that surely would be harder on their knees than a gym floor. Conjecture on my part, but I think there's as much credence to the Clippers Curse as there is an AAU issue.

Also, Oden's got a short leg. AAU didn't cause that. :)

that is the best article i have ever seen him write. actually entertaining and informative. what a profile of bad picks and such. if i were a forward- i would never play for the clips.
griffin is probably screwed now.
