Aaron Jackson has always wanted to improve the players around him. He's unselfish and a facilitator on offense. His strengths include attacking the basket and finding the open man or making the pass before the pass that leads to a score. He's a true point guard in every sense of the phrase.

So when the Indiana Pacers asked him to play shooting guard during last summer's Orlando Pro Summer League, it's easy to see why Jackson wasn't able to make the first impression he had hoped for.

Indiana wanted A.J. Price running the point so they put Jackson alongside him the backcourt. While Jackson played well, he didn't get the chance to wow teams with his normal point guard duties. "They said that they wanted the five best players on the court but I feel like if I have a chance to play the one [in the Summer League], I'm in the NBA," Jackson told HOOPSWORLD

That sounds familiar (Obie)

"If you sign me, you're going to get a player that's going to work and give you one hundred percent each and every day," he says. "You're going to get a player who is committed to improving the team as a whole. I put in the work each day and I want to become the best player I can be. I feel like I have all of the tools to play in the NBA and if I get that shot, if you give me that shot, I won't let you down."

I don't think any of that should have to do with O'Brien. I think it's common sense. You want to see your draft choices, let alone see them succeed before you offer them any kind of solid burn in training camp.

Jackson was a FA, usually draft picks get first burn, am I right?

I didn't really want to start a new thread, but Thorpe answered one of my questions in his chat and I thought I'd share:

Bryon (Indianapolis, IN)

A.J. Price has been really impressive as of late. Is he a starting NBA point guard in the future? What do you think of Jim O'Brien as a coach? His system?

David Thorpe (12:09 PM)

He has had a great 7 day run. Let's see how Price does through January. O'Brien is a coach's coach, does things the right way. His roster is bare, mostly.

Somebody needs to try to get Thorpe to explain what he means by "O'Brien is a coach's coach, does things the right way."

I am at a loss with respect to what that combination of letters, punctuation, and spacing could possibly be referring to, unless there is a case of mistaken identity, and he thinks that O'Brien is coaching Houston or something where the team is performing better than anyone should expect after being decimated by injuries, etc.

I think the implication there is that he is a coach who does things his way, and to the extent that he is in control of the roster and rotation and nothing else influences him on changing.

Yeah I keep forgetting the freakin green highlight lol

I would say there is probably 25% of the fans that are very astute in their basketball knowledge

...said Stephen Jackson as he packed his bags for Oakland.

Luckily Indy doesn't need a SG who can drop 40 points, dish out 4-5 apg or play some physical defense on bigger SGs. ;)

Oh, sorry, I mean I'm a racist pig who hates white people and loves gangsters.

BTW, WTF is Jackson on about and what was the original point, that Price SHOULDN'T be the PG because he's not as good as Jackson and was simply anointed as the PG because he was a drafted player?

I understand why Ford or Watson started off the year ahead of Price. My only complaint there or with McRoberts is that you must A) take a peek at what they can do B) if they do pretty well you should keep working them in C) if they start to out play guys in front of them they should climb the rotation ladder.

Even if Jackson could have outplayed Price at PG, he's got to know it's a long shot in a 5 day camp. If he's legit then he gets into the NBDL because not every team has a PG that is holding Jackson back. If he's so good then he'll tryout for someone, play well, get more attention and work his way in.

How the heck does Jackson think Price got drafted at all, by playing poorly when given the chance at UConn? How does Jackson feel about the 20 guys that all say they could have played better than him at SG if not PG or combo if only the Pacers hadn't "anointed" him to be the backup PG/SG for the summer team.

He might be JOS normally, but I thought the coach did a good job with the summer team and got quite a bit out of the guys they needed to look at.

I don't think it is that simple. Why did the Spurs,Pacers and now Golden State lose him it was just about stats?

For all the times he whined and btched instead of getting back on defense

Cain in New Zealand:
Can AJ Price become a legitimate starter in the NBA? Most people see him as a good back-up.

Yannis Koutroupis:
I've always been on the side of him being a reserve as well Cain. He's a solid player who plays hard and understands the game, but he's got limitations especially on the defensive end that I think prevent him from being a starter for any extended period of time.

Let's see how AJ handles Nash in March. Nash made him look real bad last nite. Watson did a good job on Nash after they brought him in.
