View Full Version : The WNBA will not be televised...that much...

So, the regular NBA season is about over. I figured it's time to see when the Fever starts playing. But I noticed when looking at their '08-09 calendar they only have 6 games on FSI and one nationally televised game on ESPN2 this year. My initial reaction to that was "once again Indiana pro basketball gets no respect again". But then I went to WNBA.com and looked at the game schedule there I was shocked.

Per WNBA.com, none of the preseason games will be aired and for June only only 4 games will be on national TV. It's no wonder this league is having trouble staying lucrative....very little national exposure or even local for that matter.

Doesn't really surprise me. Once Houston folded I figured the league is going to fold soon. :(

Did the ESPN2 situation screw up work with the Fox affiliates?

Wonder if the problem was that the ESPN televising didn't get set up until after FSN needed committments of money (rmy understanding is that teams pay FSN to cover them, instead of the other way around).

I'll get my fill at the season opener for the Fever. Hopefully they will have a good season. Worst-case scenario, if the WNBA does see it's end, I want our team and players to be remembered as one of the good ones.

The WNBA is still some what new and already there were nearly 8 teams that folded.

I'm not sure I would call it "new" anymore.

Who's the oldest team still in existance?

Who's the oldest team still in existance?
There are actually 5 WNBA teams that can claim that title:

LA Sparks
Detroit Shock*
NY Liberty
Phoenix Mercury
Sacramento Monarchs

The other original WNBA teams that have since folded are:

Charlotte Sting
Cleveland Rockers
Houston Comets (argueable the best WNBA team in league history, and clearly the 1st WNBA dynasty w/4 WNBA championships)
Orlando Miracle
Utah Starzz

*Although the Detroit Shock were slated among the original WNBA teams in the league's inagural season (1996-1997), they were listed as an expansion team and didn't officially take to the hardwood until 1998 when they were finally able to complete a full roster of players, mostly "cast-a-ways" from the other teams.

Same here. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the WNBA closed shop in the next year or two. In times of economic turmoil, niche businesses are typically the first to fold.

Didn't Portland have a team?

In the same Wikipedia article there's talk about more teams coming, but I'm sure all that talk was before the economy tanked.

Why are you mad at coach Dunn? She's one of the reasons Griffin stated for caming here.

She's also the reason the Fever sucked last year. I know that Catchings was hurt, but if Brian Winters was still the coach the team would have been a lot better.

If Yolanda is really coming here because Lin is the coach I have to wonder how smart Yolanda is.

If you watched or listened to YoG's Intro Interview (it's at Fever.com), you'd know she choose the Fever because she likes the makeup of our front-court, she believes in the scrappiness of the team and she wanted to work with a female head coach again. YoG apparently admires Linn Dunn and wanted to opportunity to play for her. Go figure...

I don't think last year's shortfall by the Fever can be rightfully placed on coach Dunn's shoulders. For starters, Catchings started the season injured. Furthermore, most of their players hadn't returned from overseas in sufficient time to for the preseason as they were still playing in foreign leagues up until the preseason began. I thought that male basketball players had it rough, but many of the ladies play year-round ball. That's got to be tough...perhaps tougher than an 82-game season because you really don't have much down time. But this year will start off different for the Fever because most of their players have spoken of taking the summer off to rest and subsequently focus on preparing for just Fever basketball. I think that's a good thing!

The year-round fatigue factor and Catchings' prolonged injury aside, I felt that three things hurt the Fever last year:

1. Losing Tamika Whitmore. She wasn't a big scorer for the Fever, but she clogged the middle defensively. The Fever were without that low-post toughness last year. I think w/YoG, Tammy Sutton-Brown and Catchings that's a trio that will make opponents think twice about coming inside. Plus, they'll be hard to stop on the offensive end.

2. A skilled backup PG for Tully. I think their drafting of Briann January was great! I like Tan White, but I think Ms. Calendar Girl (get it, "January" :D ) will be the Fever's Point Guard of the future.

3. Katie Douglas. She just wasn't the sharp shooter I know and expected her to be. I was concerned about this when Anna DeForge left. Needless to say, I was very disappointed in Douglas' performance last year. She's a much better perimeter threat than what she displayed last year.

IMO, not having any reported injuries coming into the preseason, and shoring up the front court and the PG position should help put this team in a better position to compete. And with any luck hopefully Katie regains her shooting touch. If all goes as I believe it will, the Fever should win the East.

That said, somebody should revise the WNBA television schedule so I can watch more Fever games!

I hope you're right about the upcoming season, but after expecting so much from last year's team I'm not about to get my hopes up again. (Unless the fire Lin Dunn and Kelly Krauskopf.)

Nuff, hopefully your assessment of what happened last year will be proven accurate with the team's play this summer. Honestly, your view has been the only positive viewpoint that I have seen about Linn Dunn coaching this team this summer.

For me personally, it was easier to point the finger at Linn Dunn because I was disappointed that Brian Winters wasn't retained as coach.

I'm hoping for the best.

Go Fever!

Roaming,

Like you, I thought Brian Winters was a better coach than Linn Dunn as well, but I also understood that some of the problems the Fever went through last year weren't things coach Dunn could control. Besides, IMO, the Fever didn't have the depth last year to fill the gaps I outlined above, but this year will be different.

I'm not ready to predict they'll win the East this year, but if they're able to start the preseason with a full, healthy roster, I see no reason why they couldn't finish at #2 and go to the 2nd-round in the post-season. This year, they have the tools to do it.

Many of the games will be streamed live. You can go to the wnba.com page and click on "live access" next to the game you want.

I think when tonight's IND @ ATL game goes live this link should work: <script type="text/javascript"> var str=location.href document.write(str) </script>http://www.wnba.com/video/liveaccess.jsp?gamcecode=20090606/INDATL

Here's wishing today's game wasn't on TV. I know they just played a double OT game and had to travel, but damn they look bad (the little bit I bothered to watch).

This is probably the only Fever game I get to watch this season unless I see them at MSG against the Liberty and also if they make the playoffs.

I'll try not to. Unless it's a bad blowout and they become 0-3.
